Default Does not launch at all in Windows 8 Dev Preview

I know that Windows 8 Dev Preview is not yet even close to ready to be a primary operating system but I figured I would post this here anyways since everything else seems to work without an issue. This post is not meant to be a discussion about windows 8, just a report about Borderlands not working.

Borderlands completely fails to run in Windows 8. The process starts, steam status changes to running borderlands, and around 5 seconds later the process vanishes and steam goes back to default. No windows or any sort of interface for the game open up at all, and the only indication that the game even attempted to start at all is that it appears in the task manager process list.

Validating game cache, redownloading the exe file, and even completely deleting and reinstalling the entire game from scratch do not fix the problem. No compatibility modes work, and UAC and the firewall being completely disabled do not help.

This is one of the three games that does not run. Borderlands, Puzzlequest, and Torchlight.

Everything else I have tested so far works flawlessly.
Alice: Madness Returns
Assassins Creed 2
Audiosurf
Bastion
Bad Company 2
Batttlefield 3
Bioshock 1 & 2
Burnout Paradise
COD Black Ops
COD Modern Warfare 1 & 2
Clive Barker's Jericho
Company of Heroes series
Crysis 1 & 2 - Runs much better than even in Windows 7
Crysis Warhead - Runs much better than even in Windows 7
Darkstar One
Dead Space Series
Deus Ex Human Revolution
Dirt 2
Duke Nukem Forever
Dungeons: Steam Special Edition
Far Cry 2
Ghostbusters : The video Game
GRID
Half Life 2 Series (all source games are working well Portal etc)
Hoard
Homefront
Hydrophobia: Prophecy
Inside a Star Filled Sky
Kane and Lynch 1 & 2
Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West
Lucidity
Machinarium
Magicka
Mirrors Edge
Mount & Blade: All Games
Osmos
Plants vs. Zombies: Game of the Year
Prey
Quantz
Resident Evil 5
RISK Factions
Runespell Oveture
Saint's Row 2
Sanctum
Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter
Serious Sam HD: The Second Encounter
S.T.A.L.K.E.R Series
The Polynominal
The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition
The Settlers 7 - Including Ubisoft Games Launcher
Turba
Unreal Series
World of Goo
Worms Reloaded
Worms 4 Mayhem
X3: Terran Conflict

If anyone else happens to be running this Dev Preview and has any tips for me to get it running, they would be appreciated. With the list of what runs without a problem on my system I am inclined to believe this is a problem specifically with Borderlands.

I have the same problem running Windows 8 Dev Preview 64Bit. Also one other of my games Test Drive Unlimited 2, same exact thing happens after the patcher launches. I have yet to find a solution.

If I could be sure to get these games working. I would probably use Win 8 without going back to my windows 7 backup lol

Same problem here. Deus Ex, Dead Island and Heroes 6 Beta works fine, Borderlands won't launch. I have an AMD graphic card so it has nothing to do with drivers (original poster has nVIDIA).

Yea same here, I'm sad :p
The Witcher 2, also does not work.

I've tried all compatibility modes along with running steam in compatibility mode. But yea, if anyone knows how to make Borderlands work in Windows Developer Preview..

Please share! :D <3

AMD 6850 with latest drivers

and this setup works 100% in Win 7 Pro

I can confirm this as an issue as well, I've got over a hundred games this is the only one that didn't "just work" running in.

I've tried everything from subbing in drivers, the nvdia phyx engine, etc. Best I can tell Borderlands is failing before it even hits this sort of stuff.

(Almost like it's looking to see what version of Windows you have and if it doesn't know it silently closing) Obviously I have no idea if this is the case or not, but seems it closes quietly before anything gets going.

Please fix this Gearbox, love the game, but I'm developing for Windows 8, kind stuck using it, and simply not practical for me to dual boot for just one game.

I'm also testing the Win Dev release out, original retail dvd - errors out with 1722, looking into that.

all current updates, drivers, c++ 2k5 and 2k8 runtimes, directx runtimes, etc..

DVD seems to error out when doing the SecuRom launch date check after install, then errors with 1722.

Going to try setting the Going to try exporting/importing the reg keys, renaming 2k games folder at error keeps the files, but the official installer doesn't seem to actually write the registry keys? even running in compatability mode (7, vista, etc..).

Everything else seems to be pretty neat however, gotta love experimentation lol

Update (getting closer maybe );
-Seems to be a prob with SecuRom decryption on this os, trying the offline activation tool (well, still have to be online to do it but pre-activates it supposedly so install may go through hopefully)

Update2
-Seems to be a problem with the -installge part of it, checked logs and it bombs out same as when running it manually. For now, switching back to w7 and putting w8 in a vm lol. Eventually it should work with later updates/release so no biggie.
-For reference, I'm back on w7 currently w clean install and game installed fine, patches, dlc, etc.. (bout to go back into the editor in a few )
