Default Important advice for playthrough 2 & quests

Hey all,

Just letting you know about a mistake I and no doubt countless others have made without knowing it.

After playthrough 2, all the enemies scale to level 49+, and you can complete the remaining side-quests you didn't do in playthrough 2 (but you can't redo any quests).

Why is this important? If you want the most powerful unique rewards, you have to leave those side quests until 50.

However, as I just found out after leveling my same char to 50 again, if you pick up the quest as you level up, you won't get the scaled level 50 reward.

So if you want that sweet unique reward at level 50, you have to leave the quest untaken (i.e. the giver still has the exclamation mark over his head). Then when you take it after you complete playthrough 2, it will be a level 50 quest.

Found this out when doing the firehawk line of quests again so I could get the level 50 version of that ridiculous reward it gives you. Luckily I hadn't picked up the final quest of that line, but the previous one only gave me a level 34 reward.

Hope this helps.

Edit: Foxy42 put this is a more succinct and to the point manner (I can't even write a sentence without being un-concise )

In playthrough 1, do everything, to level as high as poss as quick as poss, in order to be able to complete the story quests which are hard levelled (have set levels).

In playthrough 2, do ONLY the story quests, as it is the one and only time the quests will be reset. Once you complete the story the second time, you are in PT2.5, everything is in super hard mode (a level or 2 above level cap), that is the time to go back and do all the side quests in order to get rewards levelled as high as they can be. This is also probably the best time to use a golden key or 2.
Also just to reinforce this post even though it's been mentioned, PT2.5 is unlocked once you beat the story the second time, not once you're 50 as far as I know.

The only thing I would say about Foxy's post is that if you are confident you don't need the reward at 50 (is green, eridium or nonexistant) and the quest isn't a chain, then you can do them in PT2. However, back up your save before you do this in case the reward is indeed unique.

If you are in playthrough 2 (or remember from PT1), and the quest panel shows a blue or purple item as a reward (you can see this when hovering over 'undiscovered' quests), chances are it is a unique weapon so if you want the 50 version, exit the dialogue and leave the quest untaken until 2.5

[(replaced) Stormbringer GT has compiled a list of the quests with blue or better rewards. Chances are that these blue rewards are mostly, if not all, uniques.]

The cross-platform bug is well known, and basically goes as follows: If you jump online in matchmaking or with friends, and you join in on the final mission and complete the game, without first completing all storyline missions in the right order up to that point, your character is broken, and will never get to PT2.5 without a patch from gearbox. Considering I was playing PT2 with that as a goal, it was frustrating to learn about this bug too late, and my level 50 assassin lost most of its replay value until a patch is released.

If you play online, back up frequently, to multiple USB devices, since each can only carry one of each character (Xbox), so you can go back to before your save was "infected" with this bug. You won't know if you're infected or not, until you complete all storyline missions in PT2, and notice the game does not scale to 50, as it should in PT2.5.

This is relevant to my interests...

Thanks for the heads up, and for doing it without spoiling anything.

Good post.

I've actually been pondering this for the last few days, really curious as to whether the side quests must remain untouched for the lvl 50 reward. You answered my worries thoroughly, and for that I thank you.

Its official -- I'm not going to do any side quests in Playthrough 2, but I'll do all of them in Playthrough 2.5. Very greatful for this post.

Learnt it the hard way, I'd already taken half the quests I wanted the rewards from the 2nd time through haha.

Oh well, there's always the 3rd playthrough ^^

You'll be fine. Playthrough 2 resets all the quests from playthrough 1. But playthrough 2.5 (when you're 50 and have beaten the game a 2nd time on the same character) doesn't reset quests.

you do get to redo the entire game sidequests and all in Your 2nd playthrough, but once you hit lvl 50, every enemy and quest reward scales to 50. So if you want to get a lvl 50 quest reward, you can't take that sidequest until you reach lvl 50
