Smile Comprehensive List of Gun Prefixes in Borderlands 2 (Updated 25th July 2013)

Explanation

The myriad of gun prefixes in BL2 are determined after the gun spawns with its various parts. The game assigns them in a hierarchical manner.

1. Accessory Prefixes: These are determined by the accessory equipped on the gun. Purples, E-techs, Seraphs, Legendaries (except for the Infinity) & Pearlescents will always spawn with an accessory attached. Accessory prefixes have the highest priority.
2. Elemental Prefixes: These are used when the gun has no accessory and refer to the elemental type of the gun.
3. Grip Prefixes: These are used when the gun has no accessory and is non-elemental. These refer to the manufacturer of the gun's grip.

The general effects of each type of grip (Green indicates boost. Red indicates worsen.)
  • Bandit - Magazine Size, Reload Speed, Weapon Spread
  • Dahl - Accuracy Regen, Accuracy Impulse, Max Accuracy, Gun Damage
  • Hyperion - Accuracy Regen, Weapon Spread, Gun Damage
  • Jakobs - Gun Damage, Accuracy Impulse, Reload Speed, Fire Rate
  • Maliwan - Elemental Effect Chance
  • Tediore - Reload Speed, Gun Damage, Magazine Size
  • Torgue - Gun Damage, Accuracy Impulse, Weapon Spread, Reload Speed
  • Vladof - Fire Rate, Accuracy Regen, Gun Damage
Note: The exact magnitude of the stats modified by the grip varies according to each weapon. Also, matching a gun with a grip from the same manufacturer will provide the gun with bonus stat boosts.

4. Special Prefixes: These refer to prefixes that are associated with certain characters, i.e. "Thre", "Flynt's", "Tiny Tina's", "Sir Hammerlock's", "Miss Moxxi's", etc. Each of them can only appear on each gun under certain conditions.
5. Barrel Prefixes: These can only appear on certain generic shotguns, assault rifles & pistols.
6. Impossible Gun Prefixes: These are prefixes that exist in the game's code but can never appear in-game via normal means.
7. DLC4 Gemstone Prefixes: Introduced in Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. These prefixes are determined by the Material of the gun. The Material gives them higher inherent crit bonuses. It is not known whether or not they give any other stat bonuses. - Gemstone Weapons Have Inherent Critical Bonuses by divadus

There are many more exceptions that will be explained in the following list.

Note: Due to the fact that vBulletin does not support tables in forum posts, the following tables are .PNG image files. This means that you won't be able to use "CTRL + F" to sort through the list. However, I have prepared a Word document file with all the info in it for your own ease of reference. Click here to download.

Pistols

Accessory Prefixes

Elemental Prefixes

*Jakobs guns are non-elemental. Torgue guns are explosive.

Grip Prefixes

*Maliwan guns are always elemental.
**Vladof pistols cannot spawn with Bandit & Tediore grips.

Barrel Prefixes

Basic: The pistol awarded to the player from the mission "My First Gun" will always have this prefix.
Homering: Bandit Pistol with homing E-tech barrel, any accessory, any element, any type of grip
Rapid: Infinity, no accessory, non-elemental, any type of grip

Assault Rifles

Accessory Prefixes

Elemental Prefixes

*Jakobs guns are non-elemental. Torgue guns are explosive.

Grip Prefixes

Barrel Prefixes

Note: These prefixes can only appear on a few generic ARs. These have a higher priority than the Grip Prefixes shown above.

Sub-machine Guns

Accessory Prefixes

Bladed: The Tattler will always spawn with this prefix.

Elemental Prefixes

Grip Prefixes

*Maliwan guns are always elemental.

Shotguns

Accessory Prefixes

Elemental Prefixes

*Jakobs guns are non-elemental. Torgue guns are explosive.

Grip Prefixes

Note: This table only applies to Bandit, Hyperion & Torgue shotguns that have the Tediore single barrel or Torgue quad barrel; and also all types of Jakobs & Tediore shotguns.

Barrel Prefixes

Cont. Note: These prefixes can only appear on Bandit, Hyperion & Torgue shotguns that either have the Hyperion single barrel, Jakobs double barrel or Bandit triple barrel. These actually have a higher priority than the Grip Prefixes in the above table.

Sniper Rifles

Accessory Prefixes

Elemental Prefixes

*Jakobs guns are non-elemental.

Grip Prefixes

*Maliwan guns are always elemental.

Rocket Launchers

Accessory Prefixes

Elemental Prefixes

*Torgue Rocket Launchers are explosive.

Grip Prefixes

*Maliwan guns are always elemental.
**The Bandit Grip acts like the Blade Accessory but it does not prevent the RL from spawning with another accessory. Even though it is not shown on the display card, it does indeed provide +50% Melee Damage. Also, it has a higher priority than Elemental Prefixes unlike other Grip Prefixes.

Wow, exactly what I was looking for today. I kid you not!!!. With all the different kerblasters and such, I wanted to know what version I needed to look for. Wild or Plump it is!

Many, many thanx for this (marcus voice).

I'm glad that you guys find this informative.

I'm right now trying to cut down on the memory size of the images. I didn't expect them to cause this much lag.

Done. I figured out a way to minimize memory size while not sacrificing much on image quality. As far as I can see, it is definitely better and smoother.

Please tell me if you have encountered any problems while trying to view the list.
