That build doesn't have Ruin. It has Scorn.

Honestly I rarely have trouble with this. KR helps out a ton in firefights.
Anyway with Sweet Release proccing every kill there's plenty of healing, at least enough for me.

Haha mate by then everything should be dead
Against most enemies in close quarters I can make 3- 5 Ss/Ruin leaps in a single PL.
In the case that you still have mobs around, Bone of the Ancients relic provides great cooldown and elemental buffs for added DPS. Plus maxxed Quicken means you'll be Phaselocking again in no time.

I'm not saying survivability is easy with this build, it's certainly not. I'm just saying with enough effort put into avoiding damage during cooldown the tradeoff is well worth it

Yeah, I agree it's do-able. It's just not really my preferred playstyle. The nice thing about Maya is that she's pretty versatile and can fit a lot of different playstyles. It's why people who love playing as Maya can argue so much about TL, Cata vs Harmony, Ruin vs Scorn, etc. It's because we all have our ways of using her skills.

Playing a Ruin-SS build is viable, it's just not as much fun as I was hoping it would be because I don't like having to actively think about my health so much and playing defensively in Cooldown. I've grown to like using Life Tap to actively use damage to heal during Cooldown. But it's really all about preference.

I understand completely. Leaving Life Tap was hard, but so far I'm happy with the decision. Scorn was fantastic during UVHM but my style gradually drifted away from it.
Fortunately I can always revisit Harmony when I'm nursing in co-op.

I moved away from the ruin dps build as I got deeper into UVHM as it became an issue keeping teammates alive rather then dish out destruction. I play a support role now dealing damage from midrange, heeping others like Sal and Axton in the fight and throwing scorn at the mobs.

If I would move back to some sort of solo play I would go back to a ruin build though.

I will say that in FFYL I can throw out scorn and that has helped slag enemies so I could kill easier.

I forgot to throw that in Scorn pros. Has saved my life many times. You can even throw it from ladders, but I suspect that may be unintentional lol.

Works a charm with Immolate.

Edit: Did not know you could throw it from ladders, that's cool haha.

but yeah, show me, i need visual input!
Was doing yesterday in a game with Spunky and others, but the third phaselocked enemy would just get off the ground without receiving Ruin effects. Was using a legendary mod, so with a Chrono Binder build adding +2.5s it's possible even in a 4-player game.

Though not entirely reliable, Scorn also cancels out destroy able projectiles like missiles, which can work in a pinch if you're on reload of currently have a slow weapon that can't hit all of whatever's heading for your face at the moment.

Personally, running a Nurse/Scorn build is a breath of fresh air after running Cata through the previous two playthroughs. I play Maya in groups, which always includes an Axton friend of mine with the occasional Sal or Gaige (or Cata Maya, though I usually switch to Gaige in that case for variety) thrown in, so the extra healing and CC support will prove beneficial. I'll aleo experiment with a SubRuin build at 61 with points in Sweet Release and judge whether that will provide sufficieng healing. It's curious how the level cap increase has caused many Mayas to respec into the opposite tree, and it's a much-welcomed flexibility.

Besides, the feeling of throwing a ball of depleted alien uranium and hate that makes pleasing sound effects as its tentacles latch onto bandits is the closest I'll get to being a Mage in this game. The idea of Maya as a nurse is also sexy and she needs a nurse hat as a head in future DLC.
