Default \'Halo files missing or corrupted (shaders\\fx.bin)

Is the message I get when trying to play Halo. Same exact problem with the demo. It suggests to uninstall/reinstall. I have now done this over 10 times now with no prevail...even checked the 'Repair files' box when trying to reinstall.

Geforce4 Ti 4200 with AGP 8X 64mb
win 98SE

All drivers and patches installed with the latest DirectX installed.

Purchased Halo version if you are wondering...

Check your Halo directory and make sure those files do exist. They are located under Halo\shaders and there should be 2 files:

fx.bin
vsh.bin

If they do not exist, reinstall.

If they do exist check the following:

Check the shortcut you have that executes Halo.

1) Right Click on the shortcut.
2) Select Properties at the bottom.
3) In the properties window make sure the Target field is correct with its path and .exe name.
4) In the Start In Field make sure its starting in the same path as the Target field entry.

I had this happen to me the other day since I moved my Halo install to test the new patch version of Halo. Windows XP was too helpful and targetted my backup directory of my old Halo.exe

I doubt its a shortcut or installation problem, I too have had this error multiple times, and there is only one location on my system the game could possibly be. After re-installing the game about 6-7 times, I just started ignoring it and waiting for more important things to be fixed before mentioning it. (Since the next time you run the game, it works)

As I said, this has happened before to others, myself included. The fix and things I mentioned do work in the instances I outlined.

If folks are having this problem and its not able to be fixed by what was mentioned above let us know, this could be an obscure bug and we would really love to track it down.

Any help would be appreciated, let us know what OS you are running if you are having this problem.

I did'nt say that to contramand whay you had said, but to indicate that when I had seen it before, I had allready tried all the things you had mentioned, and therefore, guessed that it was a strange bug.
Also, I started seeing it shortly after the 1.0.2 patch. Hope this is helpful, if I can figure out anything else relating to this problem, I'll post it here.

[edit]
sorry, you asked for OS, and I forgot to even give it.

WinXP pro SP1 DX9.0b (of course)
Occures with either the Radeon drivers, or the Nvidia Detonators.

I know *exactly* what is causing the problem. You have a program that is attempting to force 1.3 pixel shaders (or something along those lines). Uninstall any tweak programs and reinstall your drivers (after unintalling them of course).

Hmm, that would be rather weird, seeing as I have put my Geforce2 in here because I get higher framerates with it, and it does'nt support pixel shaders.
Of course, I'm sure that will help other people, and thank you for the tip.

[edit]
Btw, how on earth did you figure that out?

I got that error message while trying to tweak FPS....DirectX tries to use the 1.3 shader files....which don't exist.

Weird, especially since I've been using -useff even with my radeon in order to try to get better performance.
