This applies to the PS4, dunno about the other platforms.

I’m located in Europe (GMT+2.00) and when jumping into matchmaking during daytime, 80-100% of the players found are from Japan (doesn’t matter if I solo queue or with friends)
This, of course, would not be a problem if it weren’t for the horrible latency, lag-spikes and packet loss which renders the game mostly unplayable.
Applying some logic to the situation, it seems like;

  • Basically nobody in Europe plays this game
    or
  • The matchmaking is severely broken

This is not fun anymore…

When you say “daytime”, are you talking during working hours? If so, is it any different on evenings and weekends?

Basically working hours. Of course there’s gonna be less European players those hours, but zero?
It get’s better in the evening, but that seems to be because the Americans come online. Even though the connection is usually way better with American players, there’s still a fair amount of lag occurring frequently enough to make it annoying…

I’m on XBOX and whenever someone has a mic on I hear either a distinct American voice or a Japanese voice (or just Asian idk). I thought match making was “regional” or something, sometimes I see gamertags with people who are obviously from The Netherlands, but most people I heard with a mic were defro not European…

I have been experiencing the same issue as well. I play on the PS4 and I’m in the US. I occasionally play in the morning, some times in the evening and a lot at night and frequently, towards the end of the double xp event, I have been getting paired up with people from Japan in PvP. I just assumed the player count was getting really low again & the only people it could find were players from Japan.
I hope it’s a match making thing and it can be fixed.

And now it’s saturday afternoon/evening, but still about 50% of the players are from Japan, resulting in barely playable matches due to the latency.

Anyone from Gearbox care to chime in on this?

So, isn’t this supposed to be a place where GBX answers questions about problems that people, who gives them money, are experiencing with their products? Or they just go Lol Wut? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Yes and no. It’s the official Gearbox forum site for their games; a number of the devs and other staff do post here, but most of the posters are fans of the various games. The community guy, @JoeKGBX, will respond occasionally when he as important information to share, or wants to let folks know that concerns have been heard and passed on the to the team. But, it’s not a Developer AMA or anything.

A quick look at some of the other recent threads show that there’s been a drop in PS4 players; hopefully things will pick up with the next character and the first DLC.

It’s something of a population density map, so you need to take the data with a punch of salt, but you can also see the time-of-day fluctuations:
