Probably but I don’t think he really knew until he drained Maya. Tyreen seemed suprised too.
I think Ava will make a good Siren, her character already saw a lot of growth after Mayas death.

Rather have a DLC where Tina and Ava task in finding a vault and the DLC ends with the revival of maya without her powers and Roland but the power of vault collapsing and you have to escape.
The reason I chose the two is I chose the two is their strong connection to dead character Roland and Maya
Fudge them, Bloodwing.
I honestly just stopped wanting to play the game at that point. Maya is my favorite Borderlands character, it’s really disappointing that she died in such an anticlimactic and unnecessary way.
Ava was an annoying character that I didn’t care about from the moment I met her, and now that she’s the reason for Maya’s death I’d happily swap her for Maya’s resurrection. She doesn’t deserve any sympathy and she doesn’t deserve Maya’s powers.
Lilith doesn’t disintegrate because Troy stops her, he needed a boost and later says to leave her to the bandits. However in truth we all know she was spared purely for the overall plot.
And as for making New-U cannon well… “Hyperion! We can always bring you back, no questions! Unless you died in a cutscene.” I think that states how the writers feel about it.
Just wanted to say I feel Maya’s death was weak and disheartening too (she was my favorite character) but I wanted to point those two things out.
My stance is clear. Unless they bring Maya back and I don’t care how ( witchcraft, voodoo ritual, cthulhu fart’s, a vault that brings sirens back too life, etc.) I’m not playing a Borderlands game anymore.
Agreed. It feels like Maya was slaughtered as a plot device to make the twins more evil. It’s one of the copy paste plot elements from BL2.
The story feels very recycled. It is coupled with some poor story telling; reactions in the other chars are flat, missing or perfunctory.
How about this for DLC?
The law of equivalent exchange. There’s a Vault out there that can bring sirens back to life.
Here’s the catch, to bring back a siren you have to sacrifice a siren.
So who’s willing to play russian rullette, eh? (please be Tannis, please be Tannis…)
as much as i like maya and hate the way they did all of this, killing somone else from the main cast to bring her back doesn’t feel right too me. it would only make me think her death were pointless even more and cheapens it as if they’re retconnning their “mistake” due to backlash.
if they can bring her back in some otherway? sure, why not - it would’ve been cool if they pulled a rickroll on us with her death only to reveal the bigger picture in a expansion and tie it together…
…but if you point a gun to my head and make me choose one to sacrifice to bring maya back i’d point at Ava without a second thought.
I’ts already pointless.
The biggest problem with this tradeoff is Maya was a better character and was finally getting good development. At this point in the game it’s more likely that bringing someone back makes more sense than not, as they’ve shown plenty of ways to do this through out the various borderlands games without even looking at the “as gearbox said non canon New U stations”. Issue is those stations were Hyperion and that company does amazingly perfect brainscans which can be downloaded into a body via a flash drive or a digistructed body. Look at Vaughn’s best friend quest and the Jack AI that’s created and seems to have the ability to posses a person and take over their body. If you want someone back in borderlands it can be done. Not to mention Tanis is absolutely broken with technology now AND who knows what else the Eridian vaults can do? There’s plenty of ways to tell the story well and make it an emotional, feel good, and powerful moment.
Maya was also one of my favorite characters so I understand I have a bias on this topic. This moment was the lowest part of the game’s writing for me, destroyed my wish to play borderlands anymore if the writers are willing to do things this weak and contrived to the characters, removed any sense of attachment to the characters I had, and completely snuffed out the magic I felt over borderlands. It wasn’t just that she died but how then the reactions afterward. Lazy, unimaginative, and ultimately poor writing.
Here is a link to a similar topic. I did exactly what was thought of here and created a gofundme with a link at the bottom. Lets show Gearbox this is something we really want and that we’re willing to invest in. Story Writing, Continuity, Story Direction, Spoilers
I am not certain if I miss Maya. But I know she was done dirty. I’m a Gaige man myself.
But you know what I am sure of…I hate the character Ava
She literally killed two people on team crimson raiders. XD
She killed more Crimson raiders than the Calypso twins XD
Anyway, seriously though.
Maya and Lilith were pushed aside for an annoying character. And it hurts.
On the plus side I think the writers have gotten all of the bad decisions out of the way.
Maya is dead
Lilith is missing (hopefully alive somewhere)
And Ava is in charge of Sanctuary and the Raiders.
I’m pretty sure that nobody is happy about any of these things.
So what device are the writers trying to use here?
Make everybody angry and somehow that will translate to a great game experience?
It’s almost as if they figured out everything that would piss us all off and did exactly every bit of it in this game.
Can anyone at Gearbox honestly say that they are surprised at how many players absolutely hate what they did to this story?
I just don’t understand what logic was used in the expected “player” to “game story” relationship experience.
I’m not unhappy about them at all tbh. Not everyone likes or dislikes the same things
Personally I expect a major plot twist considering what we found out via Nyriad’s echo logs one of which mentioned a vault monster named the “TimeKeeper” which could possibly be controlled like the Warrior.
Why would the devs come up with a vault monster named TimeKeeper if it wasn’t to bring back certain characters?
