No problem, it is a bit different/confusing compared to BL2 and TPS.
Yes, each playthrough is a one time deal and after entering the Vault you are limited to DLCs you haven’t completed or finding that perfect loot to fight some boss of your choice. As for side missions, I believe the reward you get from turning it in doesn’t scale to the “correct” level but the enemies that’ll spawn do as well as the loot they drop (King Wee Wee being a prime example). The highest level is 69 but you do receive a total 4 extra skill points to spend, 1 from Moxxi’s Underdome and one from Claptrap’s Robolution and you can get them both once per playthrough.

Thanks. I’m sure it will all make better sense once I’m actually in it but right now it’s an adjustment.

One last piece of advice: facing enemies while vastly underleveled is a VERY bad idea, particularly if you don’t have great loot. If you’re underleveled by 3-4 levels the damage reduction is fairly significant- this is very apparent when facing badass enemies, mini-bosses and bosses of course. You won’t get away with facing enemies being underleveled like you could in BL2 or TPS- this game is very strict in that regard.

Facing enemies 5+ levels above you is outright suicide. Definitely not a smart thing to do.

Yeah, I’ve had my ass handed to me a few times now trying to be a little over-ambitious. The first few mission rewards were helpful at the time (Clipper, TK’s Wave) but I’m just getting by at the moment with so-so gear. Which I guess is part of the fun.

Speaking of being underleveled, might as well mention overleveling.
If you wanna keep the challenge up throughout the game, you’re gonna want to be sure to stay on level. Especially when you hit the Rust Commons, you get a ton of side missions that can easily put you overleveled.

Here, this should help a lot. http://oldforums.gearboxsoftware.com/showthread.php?t=112350

Awesome - thanks!

I loved Bombadier as Brick, but using launchers can be wonky. The splash damage on them is messed up on uneven surfaces so you might have to jump and shoot to get them to hit for more damage. You’ll see what I mean lol.

And this game rewards you for exploring and just playing the game. So, as mentioned above, bust all skag piles, check vending machines frequently, and shoot everything. You never know when that one psycho you ignored could’ve dropped a Hellfire or Pestilent Defiler.

Tell your Mord friend to keep an eye out for Mashers (revolvers). So. Much. Fun.

Will do. BL2 really nurtured my OCD play style so I definitely try to open/kill/look at everything I come across!

Which reminds me, sometimes Bettie and MIRV grenades also get absorbed into the ground thus wasting your grenade. Don’t know about Atlas Rain as IMO they’re horrible but mostly cause I don’t really know how to throw/use them “properly”.
Thankfully it’s now much of an issue since BL 1 tends to give you what you need when you need it (Low on CR ammo? BOOM, ammo crate ~75% full of CR! Want some grenades? Try the local toilet or dumpster. Need smg or sniper ammo? Try the local skag pile(s). etc.)

Explosive Rain won’t really work in co-op. It does plenty of damage solo to delete mobs but just disappoints when any co-op scaling comes in.

Purple Rains on the other hand apply so many stacks of DoT that even Level 70 Elemental Badass Lance just can’t handle them.

Still not recommended because hitting them is an acquired skill.

Stick to Transfusion in co-op. Best grenades in a team because damage is irrelevant! =D

Thank you for reminding me (of transfusion stuff that is) but don’t the transfusion trails heal the enemy if it happens to pass through them before getting to a player?
Seems like that could be added to the “Let’s fix” list in another thread.
Solid advice though as most people will appreciate the extra hp replenishing available.

Is this really true that transfusion grenades can heal the enemy? That’s crazy. I’ve primarily been using them but hadn’t specifically noticed this occurring.

I think so. Fairly certain it was in BL1 but it might be in #2. I’ll do a little “Research”
~does “Research”~ I can’t find anything mentioning it but I do know I read it sometime.
Can’t really test it either unfortunately as I don’t have access to a transfusion grenade at the moment

Wait what the hell man? They don’t heal enemies.
The wiki page for Kyros’ Power mentioned enemies going through its trails getting heals but even that I’ve never been able to witness.

I used to use transfusions a lot and never saw them heal enemies.

Regarding leveling, it’s important to play the game in the right order, especially Playthrough 2, as BL1 does not have a “reset all quests” option like BL2.

You can do most of the side missions in PT1, as otherwise you may struggle later in the game and some, like the Caves, will have Claptrap rescue missions which will reward you with essential extra SDUs.

Do ALL the Claptrap rescue missions. You really want those SDUs. They will all give you one in PT1 and the first five have a chance to give you one in PT2. This chance is increased if you have a full inventory before you hand the mission in. The Zombie and Claptrap DLCs also have Claptrap missions that will give you guaranteed SDUs in PT1 and PT2.

When to play the DLCs is a little tricky. If you do them all in PT1 then chances are high that you will be vastly over-leveled in PT2, so I tend to skip most of the DLC in PT1 and leave it to PT2.5, when everything will scale up and it will be more fun.

The only exception to this are the Claptrap missions. Luckily, the SDU in the Claptrap DLC is very near the beginning, but the one in the Zombie DLC is near the end. I recommend doing story only missions until you get to it, then quit and go back to main game. Come back for the rest in PT2.5.

The Knoxx DLC is a bit mean with its SDUs. It doesn’t always drop in PT1 or PT2.

In PT2, don’t do any side missions (except the first five Claptrap ones for the SDUs). Save them for PT2.5 when everything will scale up and it will be much more enjoyable. If you find yourself getting under-leveled I recommend that as the time to hunt for the SDus in the DLCs, not before.

PT2.5 is when the game gets really fun. Everything scales up so nothing will be a walkover. You won’t be able to do the story missions anymore, or any that you have already completed. That’s why it’s a good idea to save all side missions for PT2.5.

On a side note, don’t start the Zombie DLC until you have a decent fire weapon. You can kill zombies with anything, but Fire weapons will guarantee they won’t get up again! Once you get a Hellfire this DLC will be a breeze, especially in the areas where they really mob you (e.g. Dead Haven).

Until you get a decent corrosive like a Defiler or a Maliwan Crux, an excellent weapon to use against the Lance is Krom’s Sidearm. It’s a Shock three burst repeater and it tears them up. Best of all, it’s farmable so you can get higher versions as the game progresses.

Another good farmable weapon is the Roaster Rocket launcher, obtainable from killing Taylor Kobb during the story. It’s a pretty good Fire Rocket launcher and worth farming to get a good variant.

Good luck!

Great advice - thank you!

As per the transfusion grenades healing enemies - I’ve seen this said for years and have never seen any evidence of it. I feel like it was one of those rumors that just got out of control and people just ran with it.

I think that’s what I was remembering and I think I actually did see that happen but it was once a fairly long ago so it might not be a real memory.

I’m somewhat inclined to agree as well, especially given the distinct lack evidence that I was able to find while “Researching”. If/when I get a Kyros Power I’ll test it and see if it can heal enemies, assuming I remember >_<

You’ll have to try really hard to even make it work intentionally.
Heal wisps don’t go toward enemies, and you can’t control where the enemies go.

This is why, even if it is possible in the code to heal enemies… it’s just not likely enough to even be considered.
What… one wisp went through an enemy and healed their heavily-stacked-compared-to-a-player’s-1k end-game HP for 106? Pfft. =P
