Very kind.

I hate to say it but the Borderlands franchise has always had a problem keeping characters balanced and useful. There’s a number of red-headed stepchildren spread across the games where they were fun to play but kind of sucked as soon as the game got harder.

This game simply wasn’t ready to be launched. Moze and Fl4k are as OP as all get-out, Amara is strong but not at their standard and Zane is fun enough but falls apart in the endgame because he’s outclassed by everyone else. Cold damage is one of his specialties and Anointed are completely immune to it. That’s a level of broken that screams “we added anointed but they were way too easy if you could freeze them so we made them immune to cold to fix that which broke Zane a bit but we didn’t have time to do much about it”.

The same with Mayhem mode. I know they intend it to change the way the game is played by shifting around what’s the best gear at any given time and whatnot but it doesn’t really work. It’s all brute force, no finesse and again feels tacked on in the late stages without adequate time to fix the issues it creates.

The same with the Slaughter Shaft. I know it’s a little thing but there’s a secondary objective to get barrel kills in a map where the enemy is constantly spamming AoE damage and firing off indiscriminate Shotgun blasts at a crazy rate. Given adequate time to test the QA department would have sent the message back “this is a very bad idea” and it would have been changed.

Some places that obviously have something there have simply been walled off with a door.

The entry to Atlas HQ is empty of enemies except some ratches in the corridor, a rare spawn and ratches on the shoreline but you still spawn at the original entrance and have to run through all that empty space and take a stupidly long elevator ride up to the top of the tower to farm the boss.

All these little things that lack polish just scream “didn’t get it finished but needed to release it anyway”.

Not that I’m worried, I imagine they have people working on it.

Zane though… He might just be BL3’s redheaded stepchild and never be all that good in the endgame. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
