Hey, about to start BL3 with a friend. I’m Amara, and she’s gonna be FL4K or Moze.
I’ve found nice level 50 guides but they usually require certain gear loadouts. Any tips on talent point progression on your first playthrough with these characters?

Try red tree for Amara and blue for Moze.
For Amara, I recommend her Brawl tree because of the early gun damage and sustain. FL4K and Moze can do whatever they want Pick up some healing skills if you have trouble.
I’m also struggling mightily with Amara and so far her melee abilities are leaving me distinctly underwhelmed. I’m level 17 now and following this guide but while I’m enjoying the health regen I’m finding that I’m not using her action skill much because, well, it sucks to be blunt! Is this guide rubbish or am I?
You don’t have to use melee when going into her green tree. There’s plenty of good stuff for guns in it. Phasegrasp is generally a way better action skill.
I agree re Phasegrasp on a low-level Amara. It really helps control the action and keep from getting mobbed as easily.
I too struggled until I played with her for a while and got used to her. I can’t say there is any real trick or one set skill that is a must and you suck till you get it. It’s more of once I learned how combat worked.
One tip that helped me was not trying to just tank and melee. I would shoot till they were like 1/2 health then punch em or punch em and then shoot to kill.
