Anyone figure out the "new area discovered" XP award yet?

In BL2 discovering a new area gave you a flat 160 XP.

In BL3 discovering a new area gives you variable amounts of experience, I’ve notice anything from a few hundred to over 3,000 XP for entering a new area.

Has anyone figured out the exact math for this? I am assuming (without any data since I haven’t kept track) that it probably relates to the size of the area that the new location nets out to, a bigger square mileage gives you more XP, but that’s just a guess.
Anyone work this out?

I thought it took your current level and any mayhem level into account, too. Definitely saved areas until I hit level 50 (max at time) and mayhem 4, to discover them, as I thought I was getting more XP that way.
Taking the size of the area discovered into account does make sense, though.

Huh, never thought of that. I’ll try with different level characters this evening.

Hm, it’s apparently not surface area.
At lvl 32 (NVHM) going into the Blind Mill area, which is very small, gave me 2,100 XP.
I think I’ll be pinging that area in another run-through tonight, so I’ll compare.
