Are Legendaries Unfair?

I’ll try to keep this short and to the point. People will use them despite being OP’d just like they’ll use OP’d heroes. The solution is normally to balance them by making them weaker or increase the effectiveness of everything else.
My solution was one of two things:

  1. Limit loadouts for PvP to a max cost count. ie, 3000 shards. So you can run a legendary, a purple, and while/blue or legendary with 2 blue, or maybe 3 purples because let’s face it, some of the triple blue/purple combos can get silly as well. But that does limit the absurd combos of something like an Orendi with Voxis, Bolas, and Firmware. At least then you’re limited to one item of silliness.
    or
  2. Rework the gear, entirely. I think they should get rid of the negative stats and keep it simple.
White gear has 1 stat. Fixed.
Green gear has 2 stats. 1 fixed, 1 with an “on” effect. ie, on melee hit or on taking damage or after surviving, etc.
Blue gear has 3 stats. 2 fixed, 1 on effect.
Purple has 4 stats. 2 fixed, 2 on effect.
Orange has 5 or 6 stats. 3 fixed, 2 or 3 on effect.

The costs all vary based on the rolls and the max cost is 2000 for a max roll on orange. Widen the array of what can land on gear. This will really make finding new gear fun and no stupid silly overpowered stats like the ones you named. Although I enjoy a Reyna that can cast OS every 5 seconds… It’s just silly.

But I could hear the grunting already about losing the current stats on legendary items. And the solution to that would be making them all max roll items, 2500 shard activations (after some balancing), and they become red items which something even more legendary than legendary.

Just a thought.

I know that struggle. I did 43 runs of Heliophage before I got my Vow of Zealous Fury. However, though in a small sample the rng can be brutal for specific pieces of gear, over the long run we’re all dealing with the same probability of drops, leveling the playing field (in a sense).

Oky so… If i understand correctly i would say nah.

I wont farm new players or unskilled players legendary or not.

Yes bolas gives a 12% extra dmg but… If you avoid some hits like sfp or some ults… Well it helps to know how much dmg you can get before getting destroyed.

First time i learn how squishy ambra is vs orendi or thorn both had bolas target, does that makes me think bolas is op? No i have faced many thorns and orendis using those the thing is i learned how much dmg i can get before i need to back up or risk to get deleted by an ult.

But it isn’t a single instance of rng, suppose the drop chance is 2% okay then look at variant in gear stat rolls…so that leads to a problem, and note that my only gear items I had to go the effort to farm are bola’s and my still unobtained voxis core(other than that I was a lucky charm apparently)

Has there ever been any consideration to limiting load outs to only be able to have a single legendary? Would it be enough to keep legendaries interesting but not OP or is stacking not the major problem?

I think sometimes stacking creates a particularly big problem, like Bola’s + Voxis Core in Orendi. But some legendaries may be problematic even in isolation, like Bola’s.

Legendaries aren’t inherently unfair but there’s a few specific legendaries and combinations with characters that are brutally unbalanced and it is beyond absurd that Gearbox hasn’t done anything to fix them. You’ll never get criticism from the other team if you use the Poor M-Pulse Controller or something like that. If you’re using Borrowed Timer with Kelvin? Yes, that’s an extraordinarily unfair combination. Gearbox’s utter neglect for these broken pieces of gear has made the game substantially less fun over the last few months.

while people stackin the broken legendaries is annoying and definitely makes it worse, one of the problem legendaries is all it really takes to turn the tables.

I have an interesting idea.

Do something like warframe does with its Mods system. Basically have each piece of gear take up a certain amount of points when put into a loadout.
Lets say each loadout can have a 3 spaces with a total of 10 points.
All white, green, blue, purple will take 1,2,4,5 points respectively.
All legendaries will be given points from 5-10 points depending on how powerful it is.
If you want to run some piece of powerful legendary gear then that’s all youll be running in that loadout because it’s worth 10 points and takes up all 10 points allotted in that loadout. No free shard gear to help, just that 1 piece is all you get.

That would really cut down on the free shard and 2 legendary’s that I’m seeing just about everyone running lately.

Obviously they cant just implement this system, I know its a pipe dream but hey - I can dream cant I?

No because things like Borrowed Timer Kelvin or Bola’s Orendi would still be ridiculous.

That’s too bad. I think Borrowed timer highlights a problem with Kelvin that should be fixed, personally. Something about that stun move needs adjusted. Here’s hoping for some balance patches.

Any gear is capable of being cheap depending on your definition. For instance;

Is the Wolfskin cheap?
Is Bola’s cheap?
Is Shadoculars cheap?
Is Firmware update cheap?

I’m willing to bet that most here can identify which two legendaries are cheap while the other two remain relatively bad and thus are not cheap.

Then there’s health items for instance. Maximising your health through gear will give you an additional 910 max health. The cheapest version of such a loadout can easily be used on someone like Mellka for instance and would only cost 1470 shards. Combine it with Eldrid rhythm and you got the health of a tank.

Is that cheap? There are no legendaries involved after all.

Any gear can also be construed as unfair (not necessarily cheap) in the sense that not everyone has access to that particular gear which may put them over the edge to excel at a certain character or not.

When people are talking about legendaries being cheap/OP/unfair or whatever term you’d like to use, it’s seemingly forgotten that most of the legendaries go unused and there are only a few outliers that are problematic when you consider all of them.

At least that’s what I think.

Great point. Are the best legendaries any more “unfair” then adding nearly 1000 health to a character that was designed to be squishy? Maybe not…

I get what you’re trying to say, but I think it is quite a stretch comparing max health gear to the likes of items like bolas, firmware, skill spike and so on. You’re talking about 3 pieces of gear. I could take one of the busted legendaries, AND 2 of the Max health pieces if I want. Yeah it’ll be expensive, but people constantly exaggerate how hard it is to get shards. It isn’t tough. I’ve always thought gear was supposed to somewhat highlight a characters strengths, or try to make up for a characters downfalls like the max health mellka example you gave. Legendaries can too drastically change a characters limits/limitations and in the cases of an item like bola finder give the character a fourth skill in the form of a longer lasting priority target as an example.

Which is why I didn’t, or intentionally at least.

My main point was that saying that legendaries as a whole are cheap on the basis that they are legendary is oversimplifying it, not to mention wrong in my eyes. There’s a spectrum after all and the legendaries don’t end up on the higher end of the spectrum because of their rarity.

For instance, Sportsman’s Haute-Couture Kevlar (Blue LLC Vest) is arguably better than both Shadoculars and Wolfskin.

The outlying legendaries are certainly in their own league, but go further down and I reckon you’ll find a lot more pieces of all rarities which beats quite a few legendaries.

Some legendaries can. Still, the keyword there being “can”, that’s not always the case.

To use Shadoculars as an example again; It would allow virtually anyone to theoretically reveal any cloaked target. Most characters don’t have such a feature, so it’d function as an extra helix option for them. It could work wonders on someone like Miko for instance as he’s one of the few to reap all benefits that the Shadoculars offers.

Yet you have Symbiotic Gauntlet which works better on him, and virtually any other character as well despite not granting an additional effect which may very well have been a helix option. It simply adds another stat boost with a basic scaling which is always active.

Shadoculars and the other underpowered legendaries aren’t the problem though. I’ve had this same discussion with another forum member. Why are the legendaries nobody has an issue with being brought into discussion? yeah, you are right, not all legendary pieces of gear are game breaking. Every game breaking piece of gear is legendary though.

This is why;

Therefore it’s wrong to say that legendaries are cheap, because that is a large generalisation. The problem of outlying legendaries is deluted to be every legendary.

Are legendaries cheap? - No.
Are a select few legendaries cheap? - Yes.
