Are some weapon parts rare?

The Quad barrel can appear on Blue or higher rarity shotguns. For example, the Twister and the Butcher both have a Quad barrel. But yes, it is rarer than other parts. Something also extremely rare, is a Legendary weapon without a Scope or Sight. The one that comes to mind is the Longbow Sniper Rifle, which can also spawn without an accessory something also extremely rare for a Legendary weapon. However a Sniper Rifle without a Scope seems counterintuitive.

The Buffalo and Elephant Gun sniper rifles also never have a scope, but I don’t know if I’d call that “rare”, exactly, since all 3 are designed not to have a scope. Unusual, certainly, but somehow “rare” doesn’t seem right (at least in my mind).

I meant it is rare in the sense that almost all Legendary Weapons have a Sight or Scope but the Longbow does not. So, the Longbow is at least somewhat rare for what it lacks.

Are you sure about this ? (The accessory part)

I’m pretty sure the Longbow always spawns with an accessory, although since it doesn’t have a scope, there are a lot of accessories it can’t get since they attach to the scope. If I remember correctly, it can have the stability accessory, the crit, the accuracy or a blade… And that’s it. But I’m almost certain it always spawns with one.

A Thermogenic Longbow is the variant / prefix that has no accessory. See Max Stats for Sniper Rifles.

Yeah that’s what it would be named according to the prefixes in the game, but can it actually spawn legitimately ?

I’ve farmed about 20 longbows (the Blockhead doesn’t spawn as often as I would like) and none of them had that prefix.

Not saying it’s not possible, but I’ve never even heard of one.

Well, the Longbow Variant wiki page has several Longbow variants / prefixes pictured and 2 of them have the Thermogenic prefix (a level 19 and a level 44). While it is entirely possible they were created with a 3rd party utility, I can’t really see someone going out of their way to create one with that prefix given the a) low level and b) already a sniper with no scope, so (logically) why not just add a scope. Also, I recall watching an Angry Joe video where Joe was playing the Tiny Tina DLC with some other people. They were in the forest area that players go to to farm the Bee shield, when Joe got a Thermogenic Longbow as a world drop. If I can find the video, I will edit this post and post a link to it.

Hmm? That shouldn’t be possible. I am curious about that. The Longbow is a Unique E-Tech (technically) and I’ve never seen it as a World Drop, which includes chests, from myself or anybody in the Item Finds topic.

I think he said he got it as a world drop, while playing and recording in the video itself. But I could be wrong. He may have already had the item. I will watch it again, to see if he got it as a drop while playing / recording the video or if he had gotten it at some time prior. I am almost 100% positive that the Longbow had the “Thermogenic” prefix, but watching the video again should clear that up.

I’d be really surprised if that is true honestly.

Nevertheless, I got a Thermogenic Longbow just now myself @Chuck80. Seriously, after 4 kills (actually 5 but I couldn’t see a kill as a Badass Creeper went into hiding). I am convinced (well, sort of as explained in later posts) they have a much higher drop rate than ordinary bosses. This is already my 4th Longbow in just 14 kills.

It sounds to me like some parts generation fail from the game.

Something like: The game tries to generate the gun with an impossible prefix, it then fails, so the game generates a new prefix… if it fails a few times, the gun spawns without an accessory even if it’s not supposed to be possible.

I have no computer science background, so my explanation is probably riddled with layman’s terms, but that’s probably the gist of it.

That’s RNG, that fickle mistress.
You need a MUCH bigger sample to be able to call things like that IMO.
Though 4 in 14 is pretty high for a legendary drop… What does @HeyCarNut think of this ?

Trust me, I know that VERY well (part of the reason why a certain topic of mine exists).

I got 4 Saturn drops in a row, (Hive, then 3 Corrosive Invaders on OP8 in a row…) a few days ago, then it normalized itself. The chance of 4 1:10 chances happening in a row is 1:10^4 or 1:10000. Randomness at it’s best.
It’s just a hunch and I am at the beginning of my data hunting anyway, I am not really sure of it.

Ah, good point there. I probably should have made that more clear indeed.

I find it strange that the Blockhead is so much rarer though. If they are in the same lootpool they should have an equal chance of dropping but (1 Blockhead vs. 4 Longbows) my experiences apparently really doesn’t feel like that. But alas, we do need a larger sample size which I am working on.

Assuming I don’t give up and never return to it…

Also, to get a bit back on topic, what’s the deal with Infinities anyway? They have accessories and elements fiendishly rare, just like blues (those who farmed Sand Hawks know what I mean). I know the Bitch has the elemental problem too, not sure about the accessories for them.

I’m assuming this is the same thing as the Longbow: The Infinity can’t spawn in Slag, so if RNG gives you a slag one, the game re-rolls the element… so you basically have 1/4 less chance to have elements on it.

No clue about the Bitch though.

I dunno, the vast majority of Infinites I’ve seen have no element (or accessories. That damn Rapid prefix), that’s way more than that would suggest.
If I am farm Mercy for some strange reason I’ll take note of the parts.

Doesn’t the Emperor also have an Element problem? Not completely sure about that as the Assassins have a broken drop rate (for the Emperor and Skin).

Yea 90 percent of the infintys ive gotten from farming the doc were non elemental. Its so damn rare to get one with an element. I farmed him for so long trying to get all the elements. And ive only gotten three to drop with elements. Then again some people have told me they get elemental versions all the time from him, so i dunno.

I watched the Angry Joe video again. It appears he already had the Thermogenic Longbow and did not get is as a RWD. Judging by the time the video was published (October 18, 2013), my guess is that since he was playing the Tiny Tina DLC during the BL2 $100k Loot Hunt, he likely got it as a drop from Mr. Boney Pants Guy.
