I think you’re placing too much stock on headshots = the only skilled/ intended aspect and playstyle of Marquis. I don’t see it that way, nor have I ever - as it’s been mentioned, his shots aren’t easy to land, put simply. 150 body damage sounds fine until you realize that countless other factors influence whether or not the player will have time OR the dexterity to hit again, or two more times, ect. Again, this cannot be emphasized enough, especially as the meta has always involved an aggressive push towards center lane in Incursion. Landing ANY shot as Marquis imo takes a higher degree of skill than most (keyword here) other abilities in Battleborn.
We can disagree about who Marquis is supposed to deny all day (and the answer is everybody, given a very skilled player), but the fact remains that because he’s been nerfed twice without recompense, there’s no redeeming quality about him that makes playing him competitively a wise choice.
End note - I don’t view them as niche picks. Long-range lane denial is a very real and often very dextrous role. The problem here is that Toby does everything better than Marquis now, and that’s not right considering Marquis doesn’t get the insane wave clear of Toby until level 8, nor does his single target damage come close to Toby’s reliable and easier to use railgun.
EDIT: Also, on the note of dominating, I think that if a particular skill is difficult to use and somebody puts in the effort to become insanely good with it, then they deserve to wreck face. Ever faced a Ghalt who just doesn’t miss a hook?
Marquis isn’t in a good spot at all; there’s a reason he’s not being chosen anymore.
Snipers almost always have the highest skill cap. Skill cap means a relationship where you get better results the better you are. I don’t think anyone has hit the skill cap of him, which would be jumping and strafing while getting crits and never missing a shot
There’s a sweetspot for his damage, he dealt too much before, and now that they nerfed his passive, he’s worthless.
What I think they should do is change the way his passive works, rather than having it deal extra damage on the third shot, what they should do is make is so the first shot deals the least damage (probably where it is now), the second shot deals 20% more damage, and the third consecutive shot deals 30% more damage, and then it resets. However, if you miss the shot, it also resets the passive.
This would make it so Marquis can still deal good damage, but only if you’re a good shot.
TL;DR: Rework Marqui’s Passive
1st shot: Normal damage -> 2nd shot: +20% Damage -> 3rd Shot +30% Damage (damage doesn’t stack between shots) If you miss a shot you restart, if you get all three, you still restart.
I’d like to think that’d raise his skill cap back up.
I think they should keep the passive @Tehh_Hamster is actually right, people blame his easyness on “the sniper can hit big targets” which is, pardon my French, bulls**t. Back in the day I realized that on fighting a marquis, all you have to do is have a melee (preferably an assasin, harasser or skirmisher) and kill/scare him off.
Now a good marquis will use hoodinies to ruin possible flanks on him and secure his perch, and use temporal distortion offensively when he knows it is safe to do so
Lastly a good marquis can hit agile characters regularly and be fairly well with crits
PS believe it or not, marquis and thorn is actually a counter counter match up, their abilities both counter each other and the one on ones they can have are actually pretty fun to watch (note if the marquis is not good, the match up will seem like a stomp for thorn)
I’m not saying he’s easy, I’m just saying that I’d rather he be reworked to punish people for playing like a dumbass. I respect a good Marquis, and I’d like the good players be rewarded for being good, and the morons be punished for being morons, hence my suggested change.
“The dude with arguably the highest skillcap”. Well, you did say arguably, so I’ll argue that’s bollocks
S&A, Foxtrot, Pendles, Reyna… All have much higher skill caps.
On the topic at hand… I fail to see how he is weak. If you get a crit with marquis’ sniper rifle it hurts quite a lot. Sure, his pistol doesn’t do the most damage but it’s not supposed to. Personally, I think Hoodini is his weakest asset. You can stack them together which is nice, but they don’t really do any damage.

I think you misinterpreted skill cap with how easy it is to play a character well.
In your case, S&A, Pendles, Reyna, and (maybe) WF, aren’t easy characters to do exceedingly well with, but once you learn their niches (SA fetch+ how to initate and survive, Pendles positioning, ganking, Reyna cooldown management and priority targetting, WF skill synergy), the actual presence of mind, the know-how on the roles, becomes less skill-intensive than landing meaningful shots with Marquis.
Plus, as mentioned before, there’s almost no limit to how good a Marquis can be. Hence, the highest skill cap, not the hardest to use.
You quoted someone talking about how Marquis can deal 300 damage or 500 with a crit. You responded by saying Benedict does that right out of the gate. Clearly, he cannot
Believe it or not, that might actually be legit. Pillar pillar nullify pillar pillar could do that with all damage upgrades. 2 x 1.15 x 1.15 x 1.091 x 1.5 x the 400ish damage it has at that level makes it over 1700
