Battleborn: (B) Tier Boldur

Overview

Boldurs ult as gone from being okay in the CTT to one of the best in the game. he starts out pretty slow since all of his sustain and shield tanking ability comes from his helix. Although he doesn’t deal a lot of damage early game he is pretty good at slowing and knocking up/stunning people into walls while being able to tank a bit of damage with his shield. After hitting level 5 he becomes much better as his sustain sky rockets with the ability to heal 50% of damage dealt to his shield. His axe can also deal some decent burst if you wait for the cooldown on his ult since he can double up on the aoe thrown axe damage. with the correct helix choices he can not only run at full speed with his shield up but also slow the enemy with an axe slow + his fists while receiving a speed boost. With his runes up on his shield i would say he has the best tanking ability out of the whole cast with his immense sustain and damage soaking ability. After he hits level 10 you can either have an unbreakable shield or a huge damage boost to his basic attacks with the axe. Overall Boldur is a great addition to any team although he suffers a bit early game he easily redeems his self with such a strong late game presence.

Role
Tank and Initiator.

Pros

  • Fantastic late game.
  • Best sustain among all of the tanks.
  • dash that can stun or knock up depending on helix choices.
  • Really high movement speed after a kill and when his axe is not in hand.
  • 30 second cooldown on his ult.
  • Really high damage on his axe melee upon hitting level 10.
  • Can run at full speed while his shield is up.
  • A Dwarf (added by dwarfurious and ssfjustin)

Cons

  • His dash is his only escape and Initation early game.
  • Cannot heal nearly as much if his ult isn’t up.
  • Relies on his shield for sustain and tanking.
  • Pretty bad early game since he requires his ult to truly shine.
  • His axe melee needs his 10th helix to really pump out good damage.

Good Match-ups

Caldarius, EL Dragon, Marquis, Montana, Rath, Kelvin, Whiskey Foxtrot.

Bad Match-ups

Ambra, Kleese, Benedict, Ghalt, Phoebe, Orendi, Oscar Mike.

I have some problems with a few of the cons you listed. You say his only escape and initiate is his dash and that is ,in my opinion, completely untrue. Tossing his axe gives a 30% movement speed buff as you mentioned if you get the axe slow you aim for a target toss your axe and bolt. Before you get the slow if you dip below half health you can fling your axe to space and just run away. I found that unless the other team doubles up stuns on me I normally live. Also if you give him an attack speed gear he dumps out some serious damage when enraged.

Yeah this was my review of him since the beta and i need to change all of my previous reviews since i was able to learn from and play some really great players in the EA. I’ll try to get to them after a few weeks of play so i completely understand their ins and outs and to help new players understand how they should be played. Your right though Boldur is amazingly fast especially with some of his helix upgrades.

I tried playing Boldur but it was so hard to get kills. I don’t get how to use him.

The first Helix, so getting the axe back after throwing it is a no no? If you throw the axe and run away, will it eventually come back to you? lol i’m so bad with Boldur

Boldur is a beast once he unlocks his ultimate. I would never take the axe return in the first tier helix. Using the axe throw slow and his melee slow is a must for good PvP. I think his axe throw should count as an initiator since it can slow enemies and set them up for your attacks. Overall I would say he is probably a high B tier character because he is slow to start off but he is incredibly powerful in the late game.

I have played boldur since the ctt. I may not be the best boldur but I have yet to see anyone else who can get away with the ■■■■■■■■ like I do. These are my helix choices.

  1. Always crash helmet. Taking the other one makes the fastest (I’m pretty sure) character in the game just a guy with with a shield.
2.Rage always. Again the other talent makes boldur worse. Also gives damage and attack speed(and later other stuff) on command. Why throw away a perfectly good way to execute squshies?
3.First option. Depending on how you wanna play it you can grab a way to chase them and tackle them and beat them to death or you can get a way to stand in front of the enemy team and laugh as they try to kill you after you reach helix rank 5. Note that if you go shield mastery at 10 you lose a bit of benefit but the speed is still nice.
  2. Just take the slow.
  3. If you have it take the damage reduction. Other two aren’t bad but half damage is amazing.(At this point I should say that I don’t have him yet and this was my build in beta but I don’t think anything changed)
  4. Axe toss. Unless you have the weakness unlocked.
  5. User preference I like both.
  6. Cooldown reduction.
  7. More health because it’s so easy to get those stacks. Also I’m not sure if the other one works if your axe is exploded. I don’t think so.
  8. I always take shield mastery. Goes back to the whole “laugh as they struggle to kill you” thing above. However both are good.

Now onto how I play him. Up until you hit rank 5 treat him gently. This is not to say you can’t dive on someone. Just keep your axe off cooldown until you dip below half health then toss it and run away to heal. Rinse and repeat until 5. At rank 5 you ALWAYS want your shield rune up. The axe rune is expendable whether it’s to kill a wave of minions or to slow people down (the explosion slows if you spec it) to either run away or chase. Only expend your shield rune when your ultimate is off cooldown or to secure a kill. If you go for a kill you might wanna back off till you can get it back. Always try to use both runes before you ultimate again otherwise you waste half of it. Obviously keep the enemy in front of your shield at all times possible. I don’t think I forgot anything but if I did whoops.
GEAR- I always see People forget that gear can make a huge difference. I like to run with an attack speed buff then as much heal power, healing received, and regen as possible. I’m out of characters.

Take Vidanium Root Tea looks to be custom built for boldur so if you have it (it’s legendary) use it. It’s amazing. I just looked at the time and I spent about an hour typing this on mobile if it doesn’t help pick someone else and may God have mercy on your soul.
