No worries! I just wanted to make sure everyone was clear.
Where did they get money to develop the game at first? And why do you all think they don’t have money? 2k is a big publisher. And the game was sold at the very least in 500,000 copies, more likely upto 1 million.
I know right. People acting like the GBX and 2K employees need us to buy microtransactions so they can feed their starving families. They’ve got plenty of cash going around. 2K is obviously just not willing to take the financial risk of spending more money on the game, and have taken the easy option of adding MT’s to get some cash flow back. As long as consumers keep accepting this bull ■■■■ business practice and buying them, it’ll just keep happening unfortunately
Most game companies get a fixed amount to make the game. Anything after that most of the time depends on sales. 2k most likely gave GBX money to make DLC and content for the promise year. You really think they should dive into that money just to make a questionable PR campaign in which Overwatch has all ready dominated the market? Not to mention the game has been played, reviews, and out long enough that anyone could just youtube the game that PR would kind of be pointless. The games biggest selling point at the moment is that is about 30 to 50% cheaper than getting its rival. Basically what im saying is that people already, or can find out what they are getting into when buying the game. And i love BB, but its a hard product to sell, one major point is the demographics. Its really for the special group of people, like how i like Phantom Dust.
2k is a big publisher which is the reason why agreed to support the renowned GBX. But it 2k has already given them the money to work on the promised year of content it is most likely up to GBX to figure out how to best budget it. Unless BB popularity grow to a point where 2k find it in the best interest to invest more money they will most likely move to other titles. Don’t forget XCOM two is coming out soon which will most likely have a bigger turn out than BB. Its not like 2k doesn’t have other IPs under its belt, and they most likely knew BB was a risky investment.
Hah, you’ve substituted my suggestion of a “proper PR campaign” with your “obviously bad PR campaign.” This is a failed argument.
OW and BB are different games, there’s no need to fight OW and Blizzard. Instead of, as you might imagine it, “OW is crap, BB is top, come here and play it,” BB needs a campaign to make people clear of what BB is; what kind of gameplay it offers; what it focuses on; what it is good for; at last that it’s not a “poor man’s OW” as so many people think - it’s not OW at all.
sbspalding made a good point about it, check out item #4:
BB and OW are different in the sense of TTK in terms of gameplay. OW is a bit faster in CD, and skills usage. The game are pretty much the same when you boil it down to game mechanics. You play a hero, with 2 skills, a passive, and ultimate. If some one has not followed either game you could assume at first glance they could pretty much be the same thing. It is obvious just from the amount of people that compare them that OW and BB has a lot in common. And we are talking about core gameplay mechanics, not graphics, story, or progression. Its like saying Guilty Gear and Blaze Blue have nothing in common. Also because 2k has decide to mark the price down, the goal is to look more cost effective than OW. So it in come cases could be consider the poor mans OW at this point.
A PR campaign wouldn’t do well, because like i said where is this money coming from? Also the game has been out for almost/over 3 months now, if your interested in BB you can youtube a walk through of the whole story, and there are tons of videos on PVP.
Unless it is an impulse buy the consumer will already know what to expect from the game before they even take their debit card out. Also im not suggestion any PR promotions as i think i would just be a waste of time, and resources to the game. I was simply stating what the could base it off of.
Back to my original post: “They had no choice on micros.”
Ending: I agree with sbspalding, so i have no idea why you put that there. The game has a very narrow demographic, i assume that most of use who play BB like both MOBAs and FPS. If you don’t fall in this group you will get flustered/bored of the game quickly. Unless a player like playing story on normal then they most likely will not stick with the game.
I have a question, has anyone played a match where no one had a payable skin?
Plenty of times. I rarely see people with paid skins. maybe 1 person every 4-5 matches.
Yeah I haven’t seen but maybe 5 players with new skins since they came out. That’s out of 30 matches non consecutive days. Ps4.
Maybe if they make more at some-point, but you’ll probably see a lot of people with the DLC skins once those come out tho.
I may have missed it looking over this whole thread, its rather lengthy, but anyways, I am still a little annoyed about the new skins only being available for microtransactions and I know there are a lot of us that are. I hope they put in a way to earn platinum so some of us can buy them eventually, but at the very least maybe they should just add in a new set of skins for everyone that can be paid for with credits which we do earn already. I think the main problem for me is that I would rather see some skins added that people have to earn and actually do represent the player actually having to play the game to earn them. I kinda dont like the platinum skins just because anybody can buy them even if they are command level 1 or 100, theres not really anything special to them. I would rather have more lore type challenges to do that reward a new skin that shows people “yeah, thats right, I am badass enough to earn this sucker”. Thats what I want to see.
Can someone please take a look at this… 2K did the same thing with this game, and it literally ruined it.
Oh and also, I called that a long time ago 2K.
Your playbook on this one really isn’t that innovative. It’s always a bad move to take a niche but loyal player base and make them feel screwed over…
Funny you should mention that, as 50k coins is EXACTLY the same thing you are talking about. My friend and I earned about 5k coins after about 5 hours of story missions, including the last one, all on advanced (with all green and white gear btw). So that’s 50 hrs of play for each new character, and you can’t buy any gear packs or anything else, while you’re saving up. And I don’t even want to think about how long it would take PvP’er’s to get that…Also, like other people said, at least it’s possible with overwatch.
Alright, I’m sorry but it’s time for some Truth. At one time Gearbox was my absolute favorite company. It really was. Split Screen Co op is my favorite way to play and they nailed it with Blands 1 and especialy 2. In fact split screen is why I bought this game.
But right before I was about to cough up another $20 (I already spent $60), I found out that if my friends wanted to play the upcoming story missions split screen with me, each one would have to cough up another $20. Yes, that’s right. It’s already been confirmed that any other gamertag will have to pay to play co op with me. There is no way around this. Granted, I could spend another 40 and then all my friends can share one profile, but with the limited loadouts and different gear, you can imagine how that would go, and I’d STILL be paying $100. So after I found this out I did some research into GrBox and suddenly all this makes perfect sense. I’m not gonna say what I found cuz I don’t want this post to be hidden, people can do their own homework…Btw, I haven’t played in weeks, since finding this out, but something kept me from deleting the game. I just couldn’t do it, I’d read the forums and their battleplan, like I was waiting for something to reinvigorate me about this game and prove what I thought about Gearbox wrong. And look at what we got. The gameis now gone from my hard drive and I honestly feel an obligation to keep people informed about what’s going on.
Pretty sure that wasn’t up to Gearbox. 2K has a say too, being the publisher and all.
im sure they have some input, after all this IS Gearbox’s game. No one forced them to do this against their will. I’m pretty sure they have quite a bit of say in what goes on with their own game. At this point im just baffled by comments like these. Sounds like u didnt do ur homework ;). But people like to stay ignorant to things. Especially when we like something and don’t want to believe what’s right in front of our faces. Like, when the Dev/Moderator confirmed that you have to start charging your friends money to play the new co op story content with you, people were actually saying that because the game is online only, then that explains why you now, for the first time in history have to buy multiple passes to play the same levels co op. Even tho, that makes absolutely no sense whatsover lol It’s just the way we are I guess. Sad, really.
I work for Pizza Hut of all places, which is owned by a larger corporation, so I know what it’s like to have to do s**t that goes against my better judgement, for better or worse. Also do not call me ignorant, especially if you’re just blaming Gearbox for the season pass fiasco. I don’t speak in blind comments.
Unfortunately we already spent the extra for the DD version so we can’t go back and not buy the SP
Least my husband can enjoy it.
When it comes to games vs the food industry I think there are similarities but also huge differences.
The way I see it, the gaming company itself almost has full control over a game. Especially when they have a good reputation with popular game titles under their belt.
What I think happened is Gearbox had control over everything, even marketing. 2K laid out a jointly agreed upon plan for the marketplace and a timeline for when new content and dlc would be released. When sales were lower than expected and players stopped playing (for whatever reason) big daddy 2K stepped in. 2K told Gearbox to push the marketplace out because they were losing money by supporting this game that would not turn a profit at its current pace. So in a way they put the marketplace in place so they could cushion themselves with “backup” money until the game makes more sales and im sure they’ve been pushing the dlc as well.
One thing I disagree on is when people say Gearbox and 2k need to feed their families and MT’s are what do that. That’s not completely true. Game sales pay for the cost to make which includes salaries, marketing, and then profit. Microtransactions and DLC are mainly profit. At least that’s what they’re supposed to be. It’s not our fault that Gearbox had such a buggy game and people were confused by what they advertised and they didn’t make enough to cover complete costs or turn a reasonable profit and had to add early microtransactions to help which in turn pushed more people away.
Imagine how games survive without DLC. Now and before DLC was a thing. They profited from actual game sales. Or they didn’t and had to shut down but that’s another discussion lol.
2K is profiting regardless because they have other titles under their publish. Unfortunately, companies, especially American ones because 98% are made of greed, want more and now. So since they’re not making as much money as expected they’re probably taking it out on Gearbox and telling/told them to push MTs.
