I have to disagree with both the nerf to flying and/or damage. I view Benedict being in a pretty good spot right now. His damage isn’t so crazy that the reloading and small magazine don’t balance it out. Plus, there is no where this character can go that my Phoebe can’t
True, but i also played him more than probably anyone else, and i’m still capable of unbiased thought.
I know what he is good at, bad at, and how he can be countered. I even made a build & guide about this.
Good:
+Damage and Damage burst capability
+Agility
+Snowball like crazy
Bad:
-Big target (The wings are part of his hitboxes)
-Slow reload
-Slow attack speed
-Low magazine
-Slow projectile speed
-Second lowest health and average shield
He is a glass canon, and only in effective hands. He clearly doesn’t need any kind of nerf so far.
Although Benedict is strong, I don’t feel like he is out of line. The only time I do is when I’m playing Melee, who Benedict is supposed to hard counter because range attackers have much more easier time shooting a target that can only move forward or drop down at a certain pace.
Playing against him with say, Marquis guarantee such an easy time to proc a bunch of hit that, although non-crit, adds up to the point it kills him. A grounded bird is just easy to destroy.
So if you view his mobility, he has great control and loads of room but is no where near as fast and flashy as Caldarius or other faster running squishies. Being in the air with large hit box is also a disadvantage against team with good long-range attackers. Melees hate him. Range love him. If they hate Benedict that much, they’re going to hate Caldarius even more.
IF you view his damage, he is one of the easier chars to hit with but his DPS isn’t that high. His AS is low. His reload is still slow even with the 30% helix upgrade.
His burst is also in the average zone and isn’t in the actual 100-0 zone like burst type do. It also completely depends on his Q to land which becomes easier after 4 (triple hit) and even easier with +50% AoE. Not to mention there’s the homing issue if this is done at close range where the rockets just go all wonky and hit a nearby ground.
He’s the Jack-of-all that doesn’t do thrall camp unless you’re that good to be able to pull constant crit shot with a rocket launcher.
If he’s getting any changes, I hope they are dedicated to making his weaker choices better. Stuffs like “Liftoff slows instead of push” on T2 is a big “LOLWAT”. At least “Blast off” can see some use with Dive-bomb although Divebomb is extremely clunky with weird hitbox that it also needs looking into as well.
Yeah, they nerfed it from 2 seconds to 1. Which i’m still wondering why as it’s too situational now (I use it to save allies, or myself as it slow down the attack speed too) or downright useless. And i find Make some room a bit meh too. As it won’t stop ranged characters to attack you, and doesn’t add anything against melee (Who already can’t hit you after Liftoff)
So the Level 2 choices are a bit “meh” at the moment. (That’s the only thing i think need to be looked at, to be honest)
You also are locked for nearly a second once you hit the ground. Which make you an easy target for the said time.
It’s decent for PvE, but for PvP it’s better to get Tailwind.
T2 push is pretty useful for kicking people like Ambra who is rewarded for just looking at you. I also like how people can’t just try to pull me back after lift-off because the push forced them outside the skill range.
The divebomb thing is probably just to look cool. Divebomb in general is just impossible to use because of how clunky its targeting is and Benedict hitbox works. Benedict just crash into stuffs BELOW him. You can barely use him to get from the recall spot and dive bomb into the supply station without crashing into the ledge while being above it.
T2 Slow
Divebomb
Multiloader
These are the “Must buff” atm especially multiloaded that I even had a dedicated post complaining about how bad it is.
I’ve tried using reload speed boosting gear which does mitigate the problem slightly but it’s using up a gear slot another character could use for greater effect.
Hm, true enough, didn’t thought about Ambra (And probably Kleese) auto-aim attack.
Never had problems with those two, so that’s probably why, hah.
I’ll probably update my build for this.
I think pretty much all Benedict player got a Reload speed gear. Even his Legendary have Reload speed as his primary stat. (Personally i use his Legendary + Another gear with Secondary stat as Reload speed)
Luckily Ambra got some nerfs recently on the auto-aim laser. It was BS I could double jump + lift off and still die in mid air to it at the last tick.
Still hate her because she still outperform most attackers by looking at her enemies. Just that she can’t stick to me anymore when I decide to do a level 1 thumper snipe and she decides to chase.
A good Marquis can be a real terror for Benedict due to how floaty he can be, even Oscar Mike’s normal gun damage can bring him down pretty good. Ben’s in a good spot, not real OP but not bad at all.
no, what they need to do is Buff ever other characters jump.
Montana should be able to jump to the basic level ledges, while agile characters like Rath and Thorn should be able to reach much higher ledges. They should then block off some of the overly OP ledges and add some rocks or other paths to allow the weaker jumps alternate routes to these areas.
it’s not so much a character issue as it is a level design issue.
and yea, they could possibly add a cooldown to his flying and maybe a timer to his flight, but it doesn’t need a hard nerf. I mean his glide/flight takes up 2 of his abilities so there is a trade off.
Agree completely. Benedict doesn’t seem strong enough. He might be mobile, but any good marksman should be able to kill him while in flight or while he nests. He doesn’t fly very fast, and he doesn’t provide as much damage as other ranged characters. I honestly think any other ranged carry is better than him.
I’m not sure how I feel about him. Overall I think he sucks, both playing as him and against him. That flying is really all he has going for him, to simply draw fire away. (Perhaps you could use him to wreck minions but others are better for that). I can’t get hardly any kills with him and I don’t think I’ve even once died by him or even had to flee from him. It seems like he needs something.
A competent Benedict will probably pump out the most damage in the match due to his high damage aoe rockets. Sure he isn’t the best at 1v1 damage on a small agile character but his minion clear and high damage in teamfights are where he shines. He has a godlike escape + push-back and decent single target damage due to his homing rockets. overall really solid character that fulfills his role really well.
I agree with this. When I played with Benedict I didn’t get many kills that often but I would usually inflict more overall damage that many players. If people are overly aggressive with him other characters will win a 1v1 fight but he can do a lot of hit-and-run damage and then disengage or jump in on an existing fight to tip the balance.
I beg to differ.
My last game i had 13 kills for 2 death (Highest kills, lowest death of both teams) and it was a balanced match.
It depend how you play him. I’m playing really aggressive with Benedict, and i’m pretty sure it surprise peoples.
If you are interested i got a topic about the build i use.
After level 3, he can pretty much just rekt most people in a 1 v 1 though because he finally reloads fast enough. It’s even better if you have some kind of reload load out unlocked as well.
Benedict is really easy to go aggressive with because if you double jump to lift off, most people with limited gun range won’t really deal much damage anymore due to the range damage drop-off. Just land that Q and you win the fight.
It’s even better if you get triple jump at level 5. Being able to hop back and forth between your shard side and your enemy shard side at the thrall camp without having to use lift-off is just insane. It’s even better with triple jump lift off to jump over the wall near the sentry 1 entrance at the choke point and people just look as you fly back to your own base after killing one or two squishies.
I’d be interested seeing your build. I think he’s a cool character concept, but one thing will keep me from playing him…
The atrocious glide controls. I don’t know any other way to describe them… The amount of jerking around that happens when you try to control him in-flight is… Well, it’s rather surprising GBX has let the issue get this far along in development. His rockets are AoE, sure, but unless you utilize the Helix buff, the AoE is rather small. Trying to aim them while maneuvering in the air… Well, it’s rather futile at the moment. I"m hoping the in-flight controls get smoothed out, because he seems to be a character I’d have a lot of fun playing.

Here you go (Lengthy read):
Hm, i don’t have problems with the glide, but i’m not sure what you mean?
Thanks for that.
Benedict doesn’t change direction in the air naturally when I play him. Changing his direction results in a jerky motion almost like rubberbanding, except my connection suffers no issues when I check it on the scoreboard nor in real-time with my shots or any other player movement. I specifically suffer this jerking motion only when gliding with Benedict and attempting to change the direction of my glide.
Weird, i don’t have this, if you are on PC it might be something hardware related, else i’d say it might be Packet loss? But more probably a bug. I guess you should make a topic for this on the bug section.
