Lots of thoughts and feelings (initially, very meh) on the DLC announcement, but I think I’ll share the following:
If the daily / weekly challenges are done well, then I think it will be the biggest part of the DLC to provide more replayability to the game.
Attempting to make the fans like Ava feels… brave. They have a lot of work to do and a long way to go if they really intend to pull this off. Hopefully that will be reflected in the length of the mission chain. I expect it to have mixed results, but where they succeed it will have a positive effect on how people see the overall story which can only be a good thing. Yes, there would still be other issues in the story (Maya’s death… The Calypsos being annoying…) but it would be better than it is now. I can only think they must have big plans for Ava in the future since they are investing so much in making people like her.
The multiform cosmetics and behind the scenes content are nice, I suppose. Some people will enjoy them. It does feel a bit rubbish that they put the behind the scenes content as something we have to buy rather than something they just uploaded to their website free of charge. I’m happy to be proven wrong and find out it’s fantastic stuff.
The raid boss. Raid bosses were never a major thing for me in previous games and I haven’t been one of those baying for their return. I have really enjoyed the Takedowns they have done as to me they basically take the idea of a raid boss and expand it into a self contained story with its own area, second boss and mobbing areas. 500 eridium seems a little pricey to me. Will we have to pay that much each time? We’ll see, I guess.
As for paying for the raid boss, I don’t mind. As others have pointed out, many of the previous raid bosses were behind pay walls and GB really hasn’t skimped on free content so far. In the past year and a half, they’ve given us 2 Takedowns, 3 special events, countless hotfixes and patches, and Borderlands Science without asking for a penny.
Furthermore, I don’t see many people talking about how the version of the raid boss we saw yesterday is different to the one we saw before release. The arena is expanded and more diverse and, whereas the boss seemed static before, it now has many different attacks and more variety of movement. It may be that before release they heard the clamour for raid bosses so released the clip when the content was far from ready. Since then, we have had 2 raid bosses (3?) and now this one is ready.
Overall, I’m still waiting to be impressed and GB are most likely to win me over by: showing more of the new story mission and daily / weekly challenges, reducing the amount of eridium required to fight Hemovorous (not to be confused with Hermivorous), announcing a Dragon’s Keep DLC down the line and making the accompanying patch substantial.
