I don’t even use trinkets because they slow the UI.
Having them as an anointment slot just makes sense.
Decoupled from weapons farming, the powerful anointments could have been super rare, and or difficult to obtain. Perhaps requiring multiple playthroughs to obtain one for each slot.

The problem with “anointments as trinkets” approach is that duping (sorry, ‘trading’
) exists.
I do like idea of making unlockable slots for ‘something’, though - adds to the sense of progression, IMHO.

Why is that a problem? (not being rhetorical, genuinely asking)

I think these trinkets would have to be quite rare, since you only need one, may be 4 at most per character (unless you make them single use, but then they are not trinkets any longer, more like runes or gems in other games).
But - anything rare and desirable in Borderlands is quite hard to maintain/enforce, because no server saves, thus duping and what not is widespread.
So, suddenly everyone has best legit anointed gear, so what does it mean for balance and longevity?
So are you saying is that because people can duplicate saves, weapons, badass ranks etc. those who basicallu get their character allready maxed out with the best gear won’t have a reason to play, since a big part of playing this game is farming and leveling up? That makes sense, but since they bought the game, gearbox and 2k don’t actually lose anything do they? Or am I missing something?
Edit: and even if some people do duplicate the best gear and share it with those who want it, how does that affect other players? It’s not like Bl is a pvp game or anything. Again, what am I missing here? I can’t put my head around it.

You speak of the forbidden aspects of a well polished game.

The first question: they bought the game, money in the bank, so why bother. True, but as a side effect, I can apply this reasoning to any request/complaint from the customer base then: “I already have your money, so no bug fixes/content/balance for you!”. This line of thinking somehow gets frowned upon here, people get mad, promise not to spend any $ on GBX products, invoke cash grab label - go figure…
The second one is interesting, I think: “it’s not PVP, so no worries”. True, until game starts being balanced under assumption that everyone has top gear. And it probably will go in this direction, because next request from folks with totally tricked out loadouts will be: “it’s too easy, give me challenge”.
I could be totally wrong here, though.

A valid concern, but if they were tied to playthroughs, and not transferable, like weapon skins for example, this could be avoided.
Of course people would whinge about having to do multiple playthroughs of the story, but the rewards for the time would be worthwhile.
On a side note, GBX should consider ditching the NVHM/TVHM system and make repeated playthroughs auto scale, then slowly increase in difficulty on repeat, similar to mayhem difficulty scaling.
This would offset the power creep from acquiring more anointment trinkets.
Oh I get it now. Damn tho, making a game must be difficult. So many things to take care of.

People ALREADY do that. Youtubers like Moxsi always put their save files in the description box, so everyone can get their perfect god-roll weapons.
How would changing anointments to trinkets make it worse?

Creating another rare and valuable resource that’s easier to get via trading and ‘other’ means. So, at some point it may become more of a trading game and not a looting one.
Or not - I’m not clairvoyant, just something that came to my mind when idea was put forward.
