I just had to laugh and shake my head at even the title of this thread. With the exception of Troy (“the parasite” as his own sister calls him), Sirens are women. So the main story, about Sirens & the Vaults, has lots of women. And the males are not incompetent idiots - Brick & Mordecai & Zero are just as badass as ever; Hammerlock & Jacobs & Clay are all great characters; Rhys isn’t good at fighting but rebuilt a corporation from the ground up and found a way around every one of Katagawa’s safeguards despite having limited resources & time; Pain & Terror were extremely effective at spreading the CoV’s propaganda - do I need to go on?

The female cast in BL3 is extremely cool, often hilarious, and all-around fantastic. Portraying women as strong, competent leaders isn’t a feminist agenda - it’s called having depth of character. Unless you consider writing women with depth of character who aren’t “cute” or eye-candy to be a feminist agenda, in which case I don’t know how to explain to you that women are people.

As a fellow atheist I love “All dressed up and nowhere to go” as an epitaph. Brilliant. Just as good as Rodney Dangerfield’s: “There goes the neighborhood.”

Although to return to the intended topic of the thread - while I normally avoid getting into politics on forums like this, this thread has already gone there, so we can’t un-ring those bells. Let’s deal with it, then.

The OP’s first mistake is revealed by his use of “Borderlands” and “subliminal”. Borderlands is many things, but “subtle” is not one of them.

And actually, the universe envisioned in the series is not a liberal one. If any political label fits, it’s libertarian or even anarchistic.

Consider: there is no government. Guns are everywhere. In this universe, the solution to a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with bigger guns. Corporations do basically whatever they want as long as the “market,” such as it is, continues to buy their products.

Sounds like a Bernie Sanders campaign ad, right?

But this is definitely not a conservative universe, which we know because of the social politics, so to speak. Consider (mild spoilers):

Wainwright and Hammerlock, a gay couple, are treated as not only acceptable but as entirely unremarkable. Within the game universe, no one says anything about it. They’re just a couple.

Second, Moxxi. The fact that she sleeps with many, many people does not lead to her being slut-shamed. Even Handsome Jack doesn’t do that. She continues to be seen as obviously desirable by most characters in the universe. (It may help her that people who treat her badly often end up at the wrong end of a gun).

Third, there’s the fact that many, many of the characters are open about sexuality, and even those that aren’t don’t go around lecturing those that are.

Look, in the Borderlands, everyone F***s. that’s canon.

Finally, there’s the presence of female leaders. Given that one of the core rules of the universe is that Sirens are (usually) female, and have an important relationship with the vaults, it would be illogical if there weren’t lots of crucial roles in the story played by women.

Note also that males in this installment are in no way generally buffoonish or incompetent or cowardly. Rhys. Wainwright. Hammerlock. Vaughn (in his own weird way). These are all “good guys” who at some point in the story act with some kind of integrity or courage or intelligence or some combination of the above.

So really, the complaint about gender roles in BL3 isn’t founded on anything besides a general discomfort with women playing primary roles in the story.

People on the left get stereotyped by the right as easily triggered snowflakes who need a safe space. Yet in this thread we have an example of someone who is bothered by the mere fact that gay characters exist and are treated normally, that characters in a game have sexualities and aren’t ashamed of it, and that the women aren’t all silent observers who stay in the kitchen.

To borrow the terms the right likes to use against the left: This is what it looks like when a right-wing snowflake gets triggered and wants the game to be a safe space.

And as for the Traunt = Trump thing… Methinks he doth protest too much. The fact that a character who is a violent buffoon made you think of Trump says much more about what YOU think of Trump than what the Devs think of him. I always pictured Traunt as more of a parody of the “frat bro” stereotype.

If the devs really wanted to mock Trump, I suspect the parallel would have been much more obvious.

Well I’m situated in the U.S. so it pretty much true.

BL3 is sold all over the world, but was developed in U.S. by Americans…most I think.

Nothing wrong with games having strong female cast. Tomb Raider, BloodRayne, Parasite Eve, RE3-Nemesis, FF-13 for example had strong female cast and protagonist and they didn’t push the feminist agenda at all . I wouldn’t change those female characters for males since it would ruin the games. What is wrong, is the fact that BL3 threw away the usual comedy and partnership of both males & females to men being weak, helpless and whiny, and the females having dry humorless attitudes that are too busy doing grown up stuff to crack jokes or poke at each other. What happened to Tiny Tina? I was hoping she would be a playable character just based on her wacky over the top humor. I also expected Moxxi to be playable as well and looked forward to all her sexy innuendos, it would have been a blast.

But instead we got a 5 minute Tina missing many of her quirks, Moxxi was practically MIA and she might as well just not even be included. Ellie has taken over Scooter’s “Catch A Ride!” which we all know she can’t replace Scooter. What the hell happened to Lilith? She was the most cocky , quick wit, sassy kick you in the balls badass chick on Pandora and now she acts like a boring serious school teacher. Even Maya had more personality in BL2 than BL3 Lilith. Also Tyreen is clearly trying to be the new Jack, and she really just over acted everything and ended up being probably the easiest boss in BL. I forgot about her brother what’s his name…

The rest of this reply was whatever, but i gotta ask. You have fought the destroyer in bl1 right?

And an aside, if women like Lilith are apparently representing the feminist agenda i welcome our female overlords with open arms

Almost all the points you make here regarding the female characters are caused by poor writing / character development of the females (in your opinion, and mine for the most part) not anything about a female agenda.

I personally felt the writing was a lot weaker in general than for the male characters but that’s entirely dif than an agenda.

As for gay characters being all over the place, that’s just art reflecting life, gays are here, have been since Adam took a shine to his son.

There is a rumour, there are far more gays on the right than the left its just a richer demographic so they can afford much bigger nicer closets so feel less inclined to leave them.

Tyreen is the easiest boss in BL3, Not the easiest boss in all of Borderlands.

That being said; She’s not trying to be the new Jack. She doesn’t even have any of Jack’s quirks. I don’t like Tyreen as much as I do troy. But Tyreen is Tyreen. She’s a completely separate character from Jack in almost every point

As for “Gay characters being all over the place.”

There are two prominently gay characters in Borderlands 3. And one prominently gay character in TPS.

Not all over the place.

There are a lot of Bi-Sexualism and Pansexualism, But not one other character in BL3 has been shown to be prominently gay outside of Wainwright and Alistair.

It’s called growing up, Tina grew up and now she’s not Tiny Tina, she’s Tina; Crunk Bunny. And I for one -loved- Tina. She was a blast from the past that grew like finely aged wine.

Your complaint is more or less, based on what I read, “Why didn’t everything stay the same as BL2 + More Moxxi”

Its called Character Development bro, They grow, they change, its been -years- since BL2 In World, nobody would stay the absolute same.

Lilith has dealt with the death of her Boyfriend, the destruction of sanctuary, and the weight of being the sole leader of the Crimson Raiders who were dying out. She’s of course going to be weighted down by this and trying to be more of a leader than a sassy badass.

Of the 20 main line vault hunters 6 have died, 1 of those 6 was a white dude, the others were a a POC, A Women, an Ace Woman, and 2 WOCs, and that requires us to include Windhelm and Nisha, who were doomed by canon, of the others who appeared in BL3 as NPCs, all were male,

I could read into this all sorts of terrible things, but i don’t, you know why? because just like say Rooster Teeth, it’s clear these patterns are an accident more than maliciousness,

the point here being I can read to much into things and then not ascribe a weird agenda to it, you should do the same, because believe me if BL3 wanted to be a hyper feminist agenda story it fell very flat,

It’s not the government or anarchist of the BL series that determine if it’s left or right. A subliminal message can be passed in any political party at any time. Example: the Democrats and their voters want a socialist government that resembles very much a dictatorship which history has show many times in the past. Yet through a capitalist nation many political leaders sell the idea that a (Maduro, Castro, Hitler) type government is best for the people. These messages are slowly pass through entertainment like movie, music, video games etc… all through social media and internet. This takes years, even decades to see the results. How else do you explain that today’s generation sees the Democrats as the tolerant non racist world loving peaceful anti-war freedom loving party? Remember the it was the Democratic party that created the KKK, the Republican party fought to end slavery. Yet they are both seen as total opposite of that today thanks to bias political agendas in the pursuit of power and control.

Take Star Wars, it used to be about Jedi, soldiers, the Empire, the Force etc all without any pushing of feminism, LGTBQ, white nationalism, race driven agendas, Left or Right politics. Yet within that same universe and same characters and same story mode they totally flipped it to a full on feminist-LGTBQ- anti white males political driven agenda. Star Wars producer and Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy wore shirts that said “The Force is Female”, which didn’t make sense since the force has no sexual identity, that’s like saying air is female. She’s clearly pushing the feminist agenda.

X-Men did the same with Dark Phoenix, not because Gene is the strongest character (we all know that), there’s a part where Raven(Mystique) is arguing with Xavier and she says “Notice how it’s always the women saving everyone, you should change the name from X-Men to X-Women”. There’s more to that movie but you get my point. BL3 is doing the exact same thing, they didn’t do it during BL1-BL2-BL-PS, but now after the 2016 election BL3 has political agendas. Ask anyone in public “Go Daniel Truant!” and don’t be surprised if they confuse it with Donald Trump.

Everyone knew Hammerlock was gay, no surprise in BL3 and it didn’t bother me one bit. I got friends and family that are gay and I support the gay community.

Well Nisha called her a slutty clown and a slutty mechanic (Nisha would totally kick her ass). Jack did reference her as to “sucking down on hamburgers for cash”…“do you know what I’m talking about?..”…“Dicks! I’m talking about dicks!..” Moxxi is a slutty character but that doesn’t mean she’s undesirable or unpleasant to be around with. I think Moxxi is good as is but I wish she was more in BL3 or at least a playable character. I got no beef with Moxxi, in fact I didn’t even bring her up, someone else did.

Homosexuals are seen as just another couple in BL, I don’t see anything wrong with that. Gays have been around long before BL.

Powerful female leader does not mean there’s a feminist driven agenda. Many games have strong female protagonist and I’ve always enjoyed playing those games as I’ve mentioned before. You can have powerful male leaders and still have a feminist driven agenda. The new X-Men Dark Phoenix is one, Avengers End Game had a final scene in the last battle that was hardcore feminist driven agenda. All the new Star Wars movies are hardcore feminist driven agendas. The new Gears of War 5 is going to be a feminist driven agenda, and you know those Gears games were hardcore masculinity driven.

The women in BL3 don’t act like they use to in the other BL games. They’re trying to act like men in charge. Jack was in charge of Hyperion but he still acted like a typical jackass male with flaws, even Roland with is super smooth always cool attitude showed signs of being a dork. The females in the past BL games acted also like jackasses with flaws and not trying to outshine the males, they were themselves and it was awesome.

Now the males are bumbling damsels in distress idiots who can’t tie their shoes, and the females are the strong confident always serious intelligent humorless leaders that need to save the day. You forget that BL is a game about war, and I know it’s sci-fi fiction but usually in wars the males do pretty much most of the fighting and it’s also the males that are both the cause and the solution.

No, like I’ve said before I’ve play many games where the females are the strongest and heroes, and I wouldn’t change that for male characters. Also out of all the BL I’ve played, my character selection has primarily been females. 5 total males to 6 total females in all BL games. Moze was my first choice in BL3. But I keep hearing that Fl4k is suppose to be a demi-god or something.

If I was a snowflake easily triggered, I would run with other snowflakes wearing black clothes and a hoodie with a black scarf covering half my face and vandalizing public & private property screaming threats and throwing objects at anyone nearby who has opinions. Sounds familiar? I actually am the one in the kitchen, my girl doesn’t cook…because she can’t, lol, but I’m teaching her. I cook all the meals and I’m an expert, her girl friends take advice from me about cooking good healthy meals. I keep my kitchen clean and she helps with the dishes occasionally, she doesn’t do my laundry because I have strict rules when washing and folding my own clothes. We clean our apartment together so I know how to work a mop and broom. I’m not the typical conservative “hey woman make me a sandwich while I drink beer and watch football” you make me out to be. I’m not even a conservative and yes I’ve voted Democrat with Obama being my last Democratic vote so far.

Video games are not safe zones, there’s no puppy to cuddle, no therapy candles to light, no break from your finals to mourn. You’re actually exposed to intruders if they enter. If you watch a movie and it sucks, you don’t get mad because it ruined your safe zone, you just say it sucks or go online and say it sucks. Haven’t you’ve ever been on Youtube before? That’s all it really is, just people saying “this is good” and “this sucks”. I posted this because I see what GB did with BL3. Sad part is the writers of BL3 know exactly what I’m saying about BL3 is right. But the younger kids will not even notice.

Shout “Go Daniel Truant” in the streets in front of people and they will think you’re saying go Donald Trump, I guarantee it! If I say "Go Adul Hithler"you would assume I support a murdering dictator. Out of all the names for a partying frat boy, come on man you can’t be this naive. I’m not a fan of Trump, he’s egotistical, doesn’t think before he talks, but at least he’s the most transparent president we’ve ever had and he won the election. He’s not my first choice but he’s a lot better than Hillary who along with her husband have been connected to the deaths and disappearance of at least 50 people.

The Democrats we got running for 2020 are all corrupt idiots with socialist agendas, I wish Senator Sheldon Whitehouse would run for president but he’s too smart to play that game and get caught up with these idiots.

The ending to BL3 would totally disagree with your comment, it even uses a hardcore feminist artist as the final song. Besides if you really want to count all the dead bodies including all the bandits, far more males have been killed by NPC and gamers.

Yeah, he was easy but I at least needed a good weapon. I had a weak white category Atlas rifle , no legendary, purple or green anything and it did the job on Tyreen and I wasn’t even close to being downed.

That point really doesn’t make sense. Male bandits have always been killed? A lot?

Hell this is the first Borderlands game where there are female bandits at all.

Let’s look at the onscreen men who died, not counting bandits.
-Pain
-Terror
-Troy
-Typhon
-Katagawa

Now the women.
-Maya
-Tyreen
-Auriella
-Tyreen

One number off. That’s pretty balanced.
If I forgot anyone, let me know.
