Man, my game crashes before I can even get inside it

Every time I load in to an area and start to mob with a Splash Moze build the sound glitches out and freezes the game or shuts my system down entirely. There are other times I will start to load into a match made raid or other endgame activity and my system will just shut off. I have played many other games on my XB X that are way more intense with no issues. Borderlands 2 or Pre-sequal won’t even do this. I have tried many different things to fix this but it always comes back to the sound glitching out then a crash of some sort. If it starts and doesn’t crash right away it will do it when I fast travel. I have multiple recordings of this happening. Please, can someone look into this and soon. I would really like to get back to playing and not constantly reloading or restarting my system all the time.

Mine has crashed at least 7 times today. Its never done this before. Have also hard reset the xbox too.

Yeah, had three solid crashes in 2 hours today which has never happened for me before. I created a thread about it - getting some really weird mayhem stuff going on where modifiers are stacking instead of replacing and the extra load looks like it’s just too much.

I started playing Fl4k today since I can’t seem to be able to play Amara or Zane without crashing. Now I just crashed with Fl4k and I was only on M1 with very few mobs on screen at the time of the crash. This game is just terrible.

Here is a link to a list of things “we” can do to help resolve in game issues. This covers clearing your cache on the machine and the less often needed deleting a local save file.

I have noticed fewer problems with joining someone’s match if I first load completely into the game and then select that game from inside Borderlands 3.

The thread I posted the link to contains mostly people who are having issues since Mayhem 2.0 and the Cartel event dropped. Several have reported specific modifiers seem to be most problematic for them, to the point where once they made sure a specific modifier was no longer being used, they are having no (or few) additional problems. It might be worth looking at to see if it helps you.

These things may not help you at all, as a kind word of warning. There have been repeated reports of Borderlands crashing for no apparent reason and even powering the console off. So far I’ve not seen anything repeatable that will cause these issues and I’m not at this time aware of any apparent fix.

I hope something in this post will prove useful to someone.

I’m running on xbox one x and everytime I try to matchmake it crashes my entire system before the game even loads. And occasionally crashes in solo

There may be nothing you can do. The few things I know that can be done:

Hard restart your console. It clears the cache files, and can resolve a lot of things.

Fully load into the game, then use the in game menu to join the match. I have fewer crashes that way.

A link to a full description of these things in a post.

Seriously you guys need to do something about this. NO OTHER GAME JUST SHUTS OFF MY XBOX!!!

NONE.

NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE.

Until Borderlands 3. It constantly happens with this game. This time just now, I couldn’t get my Xbox to turn back on for about 5 minutes. I seriously thought it was bricked. This is completely unacceptable.

And no, MODS DO NOT MOVE THIS THREAD. Doing that just pushes it under the rug. This deserves to be in general discussion. This is a major issue, the developers need to come out and tell us what is going on. It has been happening since day 1. 7 months and no fix. I don’t want to hear this “we are looking into it” BS. SEVEN MONTHS! They need to see this and reply to this. I don’t care if their feelings get hurt, we need an official statement and solution.

This is not an Xbox problem THIS IS A GEARBOX PROBLEM. Do not sit there and tell me it’s Microsoft. No other game does this. If a game crashes, it forces me back to the Xbox home page. It. Does. Not. Shut. Off. My. Xbox.

I’m about this close to filing a class action against Gearbox. :pinching_hand:

Yeah the performance since the last patch has been the worst I’ve ever seen on a videogame and I know that sounds like hyperbole but I can’t remember any game that even comes close (that I’ve played). And the performance was never anything to brag about in the first place, with splitscreen notoriously being a complete disaster. Idk I don’t expect perfect performance on consoles but it’s been honestly shocking just how bad it dropped off last week.

My game was crashing about once every hour and I tried switching away from the modifiers others have said to avoid as well as my gear and even my characters, but nothing seemed to fix the crashes so I just decided to take a break for a while. Maybe there will be a hotfix tomorrow that will help. Or maybe there won’t be and I’ll just not play for the entire next week, while a limited time event goes on without me.

This actually has nothing to do with performance. I could be doing anything and it just shuts off. I could be standing around at Sanctuary and it does it. Most of the time it happens when I try to join a friend that’s not at Sanctuary, it crashes during the load screen. But this is a separate issue from performance entirely.

Not to say I don’t agree that needs to be fixed too but this is a MUCH more serious problem.

It’s happened to me on various games on the original XBOne. I don’t recall BL3 doing it to me, though it has shut down my friend’s XBOneX. The more common crash scenario for me in games is the freeze with a meatgrinder sound loop followed by a trip to the home screen.

That’s not the same thing. I’ve had games crash plenty of times and it boots me to the home screen.

This just flat out TURNS OFF my Xbox. I highly doubt you’ve ever had that happen in another game.

I specifically said I’ve had it shutdown in various games. And then I cited the kind of crash I more commonly have.

And this may be coincidence but the shutdown crashes in games haven’t happened since I changed the setting so that turning off the console actually turns it off rather than just puts it in sleep mode.

I have an experience like Fox, in that singularly I’ve never had any other title or app shut my console down except Borderlands 3 (any of the three Xbox One’s I’ve owned.) But you point out something I haven’t seen mentioned before that might prove relevant. I say “might” because I have no explanation as to what causes it. I can’t say if it is relevant or not, but it is new, to me at least that you have had this happen in other games but changing the power mode eliminated the problem for you.

To be clear, I’m not in any way trying to say you are not experiencing what you are. I believe you. Thank you sincerely for sharing!

Hard crash for me is always the sound ripper video freeze to desktop (original XB1) - had that happen way too often in Skyrim and Fallout, and recently with BL3 Zane with way too much going on. Never had the thing just power off on me. I’ve always turned it off though - never done the standby mode option.

I did see one XB1X poster who’d replaced the thermal compound and stopped having problems - again, it was only BL3 that was causing the intsa-off on their system.

Been having the same problem since the games release and as you can see there is no fix in sight. I would recommend you post in the announcement threads, at least there you might have a slim chance of getting a response from an actual Gearbox employee.

I went through the whole ticket process and did things even mentioned in this forum and still have problems, no other game has done this to me, even the buggy Bethesda games do not hard crash my console.

My Xbox one x was brand new when I started playing bl3. It shutdown randomly while playing. This issue has nothing to do with thermal paste

That poster had different issue than the shutdown on using MP. He was having slowdowns and crashes with increased action on screen on an original Scorpio model.

I cant do anything on the X1X. i can play about 15 mins and my game crashes. I really hope they extend the cartel event because of this.

Even if the console was new, it could still be a thermal paste/heat dissipation issue. We don’t know what paste they use(d) and we don’t know how (well) it was applied.

I’ve seen new out of box products with poorly applied thermal compound. Individual mistakes can happen, or production methods can induce repeatedly poor application. Thermal problems induced by poorly mated surfaces and/or thermal compounds/materials not performing well can be an issue for any device that produces heat and require heat dissipation (such as a heatsink). So it is not specifically a device age issue.

I will respectfully point out that there have been reports of power off from Borderlands 3 from every make and model of Xbox One regardless of age or type. They seem possibly less frequent from the S. Age and use can create degradation in hardware performance. It’s a Real Thing and might be a complication. But at this point, I have not seen any clear information as to why we see Xbox consoles crashing exclusively from Borderlands 3. But we haven’t seen clear evidence the problem is in fact heat or age related.

It is interesting to see a report one person was able to resolve their issue using a new application of thermal past. As a note: I am not excited at the prospect of opening my console and trying this myself. The “rewards” of fixing game consoles has worn off somewhat for me over the decades. I’ve grown tired of pulling cases apart and trying to fit everything back together. But the person’s results are interesting!
