Hard crash for me is always the sound ripper video freeze to desktop (original XB1) - had that happen way too often in Skyrim and Fallout, and recently with BL3 Zane with way too much going on. Never had the thing just power off on me. I’ve always turned it off though - never done the standby mode option.

I did see one XB1X poster who’d replaced the thermal compound and stopped having problems - again, it was only BL3 that was causing the intsa-off on their system.

Been having the same problem since the games release and as you can see there is no fix in sight. I would recommend you post in the announcement threads, at least there you might have a slim chance of getting a response from an actual Gearbox employee.

I went through the whole ticket process and did things even mentioned in this forum and still have problems, no other game has done this to me, even the buggy Bethesda games do not hard crash my console.

My Xbox one x was brand new when I started playing bl3. It shutdown randomly while playing. This issue has nothing to do with thermal paste

That poster had different issue than the shutdown on using MP. He was having slowdowns and crashes with increased action on screen on an original Scorpio model.

I cant do anything on the X1X. i can play about 15 mins and my game crashes. I really hope they extend the cartel event because of this.

Even if the console was new, it could still be a thermal paste/heat dissipation issue. We don’t know what paste they use(d) and we don’t know how (well) it was applied.

I’ve seen new out of box products with poorly applied thermal compound. Individual mistakes can happen, or production methods can induce repeatedly poor application. Thermal problems induced by poorly mated surfaces and/or thermal compounds/materials not performing well can be an issue for any device that produces heat and require heat dissipation (such as a heatsink). So it is not specifically a device age issue.

I will respectfully point out that there have been reports of power off from Borderlands 3 from every make and model of Xbox One regardless of age or type. They seem possibly less frequent from the S. Age and use can create degradation in hardware performance. It’s a Real Thing and might be a complication. But at this point, I have not seen any clear information as to why we see Xbox consoles crashing exclusively from Borderlands 3. But we haven’t seen clear evidence the problem is in fact heat or age related.

It is interesting to see a report one person was able to resolve their issue using a new application of thermal past. As a note: I am not excited at the prospect of opening my console and trying this myself. The “rewards” of fixing game consoles has worn off somewhat for me over the decades. I’ve grown tired of pulling cases apart and trying to fit everything back together. But the person’s results are interesting!

Here is a thread dedicated to problems specifically concerning Cartel/Mayhem 2.0. It might be helpful to review the thread and see if it helps your situation.

I decided to check back in (and yes after another round of freezes and crashes) and it looks like I’m not the only one. I have tried a good number of the suggestions and it has honestly gotten to the point for me where I just stop playing after a crash. Amara with a Phazerker is pretty much a guarantee freeze. Zane somehow has similar issues. Don’t get me started on Moze. How is this game leaving the building in this state? I honestly have never had this many crashes on all the consoles going back to Nintendo as I’ve had with this game alone.

This “insight” is only my personal opinion, is in no way factual, and I’m certain someone may violently disagree with it - but for me and my cumulative experience, the Xbox One is one of the worst consoles (for software and hardware problems) I’ve ever owned. (And I’ve owned almost every console that’s been released in North America since around 1988.) Then, well there’s Borderlands 3. An awesome game with at times nearly just as awe-inspiring technical problems.

I don’t know how any of these things really happen. “Narrower” profit margins? Pressure from the industry? The reality that games can now be patched after release? Truthfully we see some really stunning work and technology these days. I think as consumers we are “spoiled” by it. But I also think the industry has gotten awfully lax in some regards.

It’s just my take and doesn’t mean a darn thing. But I thought I’d share some of my thoughts about it. Since right now I’m not playing Borderlands 3 and have plenty of time to type.

*sigh*

Has anybody ever thought about the fact that this game is just very badly programmed ?
I came to this conclusion. Maybe gearbox should think about changing some uh…gear ?
Or just employ some hackers who do better work ?

Honestly, at this point, f##k this game. You would think after several months of being out on the market this game would be running like a dream but Gearbox, they sure know how to surprise me.

Went to play the game with my boyfriend today. Boot up the game to the main menu and boom, instantly crashes my Xbox One X. ON THE MAIN MENU. That’s a new level of failure. Then we get into the game and we are only able to play for about 5-10 minutes before the game itself crashes. This is after a few play sessions recently where I had the game crash at least a few times as well.

Hey Box, try fixing your game for once, yeah? Trust me, that’s a good idea!

Like yourself I am not a fan nor am I going to crack open my console and tinker with it just because ONE game in my whole collection is crashing it. However according to Gearbox and 2k its the console not their beta program…OOPS sorry I meant game.

The game is badly programmed and the performance on consoles is very bad. All you need to do is play a game like Call of Duty Modern Warfare then jump out and play console borderlands. Suddenly it feels like you are steering a tank. You won’t notice until you switch from a game that is really responsive but Borderlands feels like Turok 2 on the N64. Too much gfx for the systems. Which is annoying because I paid full price at release for the complete edition based on my enjoyment of coop with my wife in BL2.

Now I am just waiting to see if it’s still ■■■■ on the XSX.

Your best bet is to go back and play BL2 like the wife and myself did and remember when quality mattered over quantity with this company. We are also enjoying other co-op games that don’t crash our system and I can play online with others without fear of my console crashing.

My xbox one just crashed 1 min. after shooting some claptraps with amara.
That’s ridiculous !
And that was definitely no overheating problem.
I say it again : This game is badly programmed. Everything is so ■■■■■■■ broken, i could scream. You need some vault hunters to clean up your team. Then start with programmers who do better work.
I will write down a crash log every day in this forum. Maybe this will open your eyes how broken this game really is.

I know it is very frustrating, been dealing with this problem since the games release. I suggest you post your log in their announcement threads, the most recent one being the Hot Fixes for 5-7, they don’t look in here sadly. You are better to get a response there.

They are full of BS too! I have not had a single other game crash my Xbox. We tried to come back & play on two Xbox’s on two HDTV’s & it is worse than the damned splitscreen. We crashed within 10 minutes of joining co-op. The original One just crashed the game to the dashboard but I was on the X & it turned off the unit. I am not going to risk damage to my Xbox to play this POS poorly programmed game. Anyone who blames this on the Xbox & not on Gearbox is a shill or naive.

Hi! The clear cache is not solve the problem. Unplayable the game. Need hotfix. Now! Cant play solo or coop with this horrible problem. Again: Clear Cache is NOT Work!
I try a many many times, but nothing. Latest hotfix is worst. Pls GBX fix it!

This is very true from my personal experience and others. You can even do a hard reset, completely wiping the machine to factory defaults and it will not for fact “fix” the issue. Unfortunately, we have no consistently workable solution or even a clear picture of why this is happening.

The only clear thing that can be determined at this point is there are many of us, across multiple consoles (original Xbox One, S, and X) that have not had any other game or app outside of Borderlands 3 create this situation, ever. (Though to be fair there are some reports that some have.)

Spam doesn’t improve any situation. Submit support tickets instead, please.

Had a crash today. I was playing for like 6 hours total party of four. Went check my xbox one s was pretty heated not extremely but I think it might be cause of playing for too long. But then again ive played many other games just about all 150 games I own and never has this happened.
