Last i heard, they were eyeing Kevin for the roll of Roland. Not official. And i honestly don’t like it. He’s too short. I don’t have my hopes up for the film. Movies based off game are notorious for sucking.
That people are assuming Kevin Hart will play Roland, instead of Cl4p-TP is pretty embarrassing. Seems like an obvious choice, dare I say perfect, since the original voice actor is a non-starter.
Games as Live action, anime as live action…
Imho there’s few that actually pulled it off successfully…
There’s only so much you can do with live action before it goes wrong and it’s allready a thin line.
It’s doomed to fail… But that never stopped Hollywood from trying
Live Action video game based movies either attempt to stay true to the story line or completely toss the game’s campaign aside for something more Hollywood friendly.
I don’t see either working well with Borderlands.
Exactly what I think, the major issue to me is that borderlands is a weird combination of serious and comic at the same time, we have some really serious characters like lilith, and completely cartoonish ones like Tina, the only thing that comes to my mind is Space Jam, but that was targeted to kids
That’s the problem hehe
Staying true won’t work or you have to split it up (and there’s a limit to what you can cut before it ends up with gaping plot holes)
And straying from the original is probably the better option but even so, 1 big gamble.
And i don’t see Hollywood selling the borderlands story well hahaha
Really??!!! kevin Hart? He’s 5 foot 4 inches tall. Is it going to be an origin story where Hart plays child Roland?
I like Kevin Hart as a comedic actor, but the only thing he’s got in common with Roland is that they’re both black. How about Anthony Mackie, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keegan Michael Key, or could Lance Reddick pull it off?
Maybe it would be best to have lesser-known actors to play the characters. That way we don’t have any preconcieved notions going in.
Kevin Hart? Really??!!
I am giggling to myself right now in a moment of schadenfreude (sp?), because I was wondering to myself the following things:
-
What is the percentage likelihood that anyone involved in working with or on the Borderlands movie is reading this thread right now?
-
Way less than 10% likelihood, but if they by happenstance are reading this - damn, sucks to be them. Reading crappy stuff about your work on the internet is not fun (this is the schadenfreude for me).
-
I wonder if they did read this, if they would be smart enough to know that you should make sure the fans will like the movie first and foremost, because they are the ones who will watch and buy it multiple times and spread word of mouth. Borderlands will not be a widely commercially successful movie. So you need to cater to your market directly and make it on the cheap so your margin can remain as high as possible on a smaller amount of possible revenue. That’s just good business, not just me talking as a fanboy.
After 20 years of watching people adapt video games into movies, make casts around said movies, I came to this conclusion : these people have no soul, no respect whatsoever for the video game genre, and they deserve hell.
When Reddit can cast better than actual casters, welp, that says a lot.
Reddit is not constrained by reality, though. You can put names on paper all day long, does not mean these actors will actually do it, no?
Can’t see him as Claptrap either, but at least claptrap is comic and high-pitched like Hart, unlike Roland who’s gruff, quiet and fairly serious.
Hell, it’s possible someone found out Kevin Hart was being eyed, googled borderlands 1 and assumed he must be playing Roland as that’s the only dark skinned character, but he could actually be someone else. Aside from the possibility of an entirely new character written for the film, if they’re throwing the script out, Hart could be playing Hammerlock, or the voice of a legendary gun if they bother to stick to the borderlands world at all. Anything is possible.
However, the article says he’s Roland, so we gotta go with that and say what we think. Hope you’re right and they have someone better for Roland, though.
They often have the weirdest ideas of what to adapt and then often try to do something original wich nobody ends up liking
The first thing that popped into my head after hearing about the borderlands movie was “that’s going to suck so hard” hahaha
The article sites a rumor itself, so I am more inclined to think of this.:
slap the voice modulator effect on this over the top lunacy .
Look guys-I’m not excited with the casting choice for Roland either, and I don’t think Kevin Hart has the right phisique du role, BUT I feel like a lot of you only know the character through Borderlands 2’s story.
If you listen to his Borderlands 1 lines, he was actually way more lighthearted and upbeat, sometimes even cocky.
I for one am excited. I’ve met people who grumble and catch a attitude when their beloved games, books, manga etc. Are put into live action and have to watch Hollywood butcher it. I get to be that guy now hooray.
True, Roland was a different character in BL1. However Kevin Hart still doesn’t fit in my mind. Not to say anything bad about Kevin Hart, he’s done some good work. I just don’t see him as being able to pull off a Roland.
Any thoughts on if the movie will have the cel shading effect that really makes borderlands stand out? I feel like if they don’t have the cel shading style in the movie it wont feel like the same world.
It would be interesting if the movie had that effect. A Scanner Darkly looked unique (a bit dream-like) with the technique in action. If marketed properly, it might work…
Loved that movie the visuals were amazing and the story was crazy. Yeah doing something similar to give it that Borderlands effect. I just hope they don’t go completely live action with out any filter. The borderlands look has become such a staple to the franchise it would be a bummer if they dropped it.
