Claw lunge is a great low-health fleeing opponent fast distance-closer finisher, also.
Also, I personally hope I never referred to any of the lore challenges as stupid.
Maybe myself and everyone else who rushes through “grindy” lore challenges are doing Battleborn and its amazing characters a disservice by not spending the amount of time legit playing each character in PVP or PVE to get them all naturally, by which point you should be VERY good with certain characters.
I know I personally feel a bit guilty about all the lore challenges I’ve cheesed in story mode, as PVP is my love.
It hasn’t been many, but it’s up to a decent amount now.
I am currenty learning a LOT about playing Attikus by working towards getting his “activate skills with a fully charged Hedronic Arc” and “slow 3 enemies at once 25 times with his ultimate” lore challenges in PVP.
Really gets you to focus on killing Thralls, minions, turrets, and large shard Crystal for stacks and thus making your activated when fully charged skills deadlier against other Battleborn.
But doesn’t this challenge require you exactly to knock out 100 people with a jab?)
The El Dragon “4 enemies with a single clothesline” one also, in my opinion, teaches a way to play the character that will get you killed, a lot. El dragon should be played as a “get in fast do your danage kill some Minions or reduce damage / harass / weaken / finish some other players then use clothesline to escape our finish” until you take his right level 4 Helix which causes Clothesline to smash enemies into the air when csncelled, which should be used to clothesline into groups of enemies at level 5 or beyond, knock them into the air, activate En Fuego, En Fuego Dragon Splash stun them as they hit the ground, then eletric fist pummel them to death.
these things don’t help you because you choose to play that specific character differently.
I play Caldi a lot in PvE and I find both his boosters and his blade immensely helpful.
I remapped just for him so I could and can jump and crit at the same time. his blade is amazing for cleaning up low hp mobs.
I’m not insinuating that your playing a character wrong just not the way the developers had in mind and wetr trying to steer you into.
I think the grind mentality ruins a lot of this. People are more focused on Min/Max ing their time then just learning to experiment and appreciate the characters.
I said something very similiar a few posts ago!
And how many lunges would you have to throw in order to kill 100 varelsi?
This encourages me to think the lore wants you throwing the lunge often. With the way varelsi group together you must rapidly move after killing one varelsi or suffer damage. Just like a jab against one opponent.
I want multiple controller load outs so bad because of this! haha
Me too bud
“Do these 5 challenges” doesn’t look like experimenting and appreciating to me. More like mindless execution of exercises which purpose nobody told you.
If you pick a character, read his info and try to develop a playstyle that is both effective and fun for you, then this IS an experimenting and appreciating. But lore challenges won’t teach how to do this. They won’t even teach you how to play this character as devs intended, because every character’s gameplay is wider than a couple of tricks.

Sounds too sophisticated to me… If they really wanted to teach you to move right after claw lunge, the challenge would be “move 100 times after claw lunge” not “kill 100 varelsi”. That’s the level of complexity of all challenges in the game, they are very simple and straightforward. Addonexus is the only exception that requires you to think how to do it (if you didn’t get it by chance).
In my opinion, this challenge makes player do questionable things, but you found a way to get out of them/negate their result. This is one of the ways to teach, yes, and you are a good learner if you learnt something new from it. But, as I said, it is not how other challenges are made, their are much simpler. And at their level of complexity (simplicity), this challenge doesn’t teach you how to get out of dangerous situations, it just teaches you to regularly put yourself in them.
Also, as I added later in one of my previous posts, this challenge wouldn’t be a big deal for me if the skill wasn’t that hard to hit a lesser varelsi and wasn’t that weak to kill a bigger one. But as it is now, it is useless for killing varelsi, small and big. Not to say its main use (for an effective player) is not the damage at all.
I mastered Thorn about a month ago (ish) and I gotta say, the flying player kills with volley was super hard. Took about 30 or so matches total to finish (it was 20 kills for me), but Focused Volley helix mutation really helps. Advanced The Archive isn’t too hard to get done solo though. Took me two tries, the first try only because I got slapped off the edge of the map by Ragnar.
My worst ones have to be Rath’s 3 enemies with crossblade, Ghalt’s first blood, and Galilea’s Ambra kills (although I’m terrible with Gali so that probably doesn’t help). I do really like the challenges though, makes you feel like you’ve actually earned the right to the legendary gear.
I have the platinum and all characters mastered.
Nothing was THAT awful but the ones that stand out in my memory as follows.
El Dragon: 1000 minion kills with Dragon Splash. I got the first 500 playing PvP, then farmed Geoff for the second 500. Tedious and boring. The clotheslines I did on the swarmers in the next room. Also tedious and boring.
Ambra: Solar wind. Another swarmer farm. Boring.
Toby: Killing on rails. Not the worst since you only needed a double kill ending with the ult (not 2 with the ult) but still situational. Missed a couple by one tick. Annoying but not a bad challenge after being reduced to 1.
Benedict: The tour since I was a solo player back then and at the mercy of the team picking UPR. I cheesed the flight time one when you could do it in 10mins on jump pads and the 50 airborn kills came naturally.
Orendi: 100k damage with alt fire. Bad attack, tedious.
Attikus: 12 charged hook crits on Rendain. Comical but hard to land consistently. He usually dies before you can get all 12. Later reduced to 1 lol.
Caldarius: 1600 double jumps. Literally just did these all at once. Boring.
Kleese: 500 kills on enemies affected by black hole. What a chore that was. Also getting his capture maps done was a struggle when the queues were separate.
Miko: Everything. I hate playing Miko. Boo.
Kill/participate in killing x character y amount of times: I hate playing Galilea so using her repeatedly in the hopes of finding a bad Ambra to beat up was godawful. Didn’t mind it on Alani since she’s fun and on Mike is more common for Whiskey.
I didn’t have any issue with many of the common complaint ones lol. Just the grindy ones.
Sounds like you did most of your character mastering quickly / early!
By the time I had finished getting my 25 Ambra kills as Galilea (the first character I mastered), they had Nerfed the lores.
Admittedly, I could mainly only play evenings and weekends that first month after proper release.
Oh yeah, the worst Lore Challenge out of them all.
Ride of The Battlethrone. I could only complete it by playing a match at 15, apparently. But since it got bugged like that I didn’t even want to touch him. Groan.
I only get to play weekends and evenings as well
Even then it’s only like 3 evenings a week max.
I got A LOT of lore done early, but I did benefit from some of the nerfed requirements.
I feel I owe @FlamesForAll a public apology because he was paired with a team of newer players and me and a friend were farming him for air kills(benedict) and volley kills(thorn), he fought well but he was having to help carry his less experienced players.
well met though!
you were Alani, I wasa the benedict that match so my psn isn’t thrown around
