Retried the Revenge of the Cartels again at Joey Ultraviolet’s island at Mayhem 5 w/o the drones and aside from my screen going completely black for a few seconds had no other issues. Will give it another go after I finish hanging out (virtually) with friends…

It honestly a lot of time feels like they aren’t testing/playing their own game. I imagine they don’t even bother testing splitscreen either since the mayhem menu can’t even scroll down to see all the mods when rerolling in splitscreen. This is something you would have noticed almost instantly.

The “overheating report” was at least in part because that was the error the console displayed. A search should provide screenshots, I remember seeing some.

My Xbox One X runs warm, always has. I feel pretty sure that the crashes while playing Borderlands are a Borderlands issue, it doesn’t happen to me in any other game ever. My console has also never reported an overheating issue, ever.

I think @janejana is correct, “overheating” is at least in some way a catchall used when either the console itself doesn’t know what happened for sure, or support people don’t know what to “blame”.

I’ve been saying it for a while, I think most of the crashes are a memory leak issue of some kind that builds up as you play and more stuff gets loaded in. That combined with the general instability and poor performance from the beginning of even things like menus, which in most games are lightning fast tend to be really sluggish here.

As a Software Engineer myself, there’s no question that it’s a memory leak issue. This game is just full of optimization/performance issues.

One thought I came to, not being a programmer (but having spent many years as a developer - UI and UX sides of things), it might be (on consoles, especially the Xbox) that Gearbox didn’t like the way the controls were handled so it seems they ditched parts of the development kit everyone else uses to handle input from controllers and “rolled their own” (as it seems) - as a result, they may have code making bad calls to protected spaces. In Windows, apps making calls outside of protected spaces can cause the entire OS to crash (or at least once upon a time it was an issue). But this is purely supposition from someone who can not and does not actually code. To be clear, I don’t think this is related specifically to this thread and the current issue that appeared immediately with the release of Mayhem 2.0 and the recent patch/update. I’m adding this to the general *why does my Xbox crash?" comments in this thread that have been a day one issue for Borderlands 3 on Xbox.

I have not experienced any of the issues reported here, yet. (Though I’ve experienced some other, lesser problems.) I’ve been keeping a close eye on this thread as a concerned Xbox owner. For the last few months I’ve been playing almost exclusively Zane with SNTNL.

I’ve mostly been good with Zane until today. Today I started crashing with him also and I’m suspecting it’s his SNTL drone, just like the drones in the Mayhem modifiers that are causing issues.

Nice discussion above, though it’s a bit over my head since I’m nowhere near a computer expert.

Question for those with more knowledge than myself: If some of these issues happen because of “memory leak,” can the player minimize the problem by regularly quitting to the menu and reloading (without restarting the game)?

Yes, that would be annoying because you impose an extra load screen on yourself, but better than a crash mid-battle and having to restart the game entirely.

How do you fix a memory leak issue?

I love bl3 but im terrified of future DLC making this game bigger and bigger that the game will become even more unstable then it is now.

A memory leak is often solely the realm of the “programmer”. Sometimes, you might be able to find a specific thing triggers the problem. At this point, I’ve not seen anyone able to pin a specific problem down in a way they can consistently recreate. If it had been, I think Gearbox would have done something by now. (This is part of what leads me to think it might be something(s) in the code touching protected spaces (bad calls) causing hard crashes where the console turns off completely.)

Short answer: I don’t think that “we” can affect it very much. Someone else might have a different answer.

One thing this thread seems to have identified is that some of the modifiers are causing stability and game-play problems. It’s worth a scroll through to see people’s experiences if you are having an immediate issue.

With proper programming. Memory leaks can be very difficult to track down so if that’s the issue, it may never get fixed. With programming, you use resources/memory and you have to release that memory when you’re done. If the memory doesn’t get released, after a while the app/game doesn’t have the memory that it needs to process correctly.

Yea, it can also happen when the code tries to access memory that’s inaccessible.

At this point there are only two things I know of that can “reliably” deal with in game issues on the Xbox, as a user. These are my observations as a second wave Xbox Live beta tester, an Xbox Ambassador, a member of the Insiders Xbox Alpha Ring, and a seventeen+ year veteran of Xbox Live.

Hard restart your console.
It’s simple, safe, and clears your local cache files. It can frequently resolve issues you might be experiencing with a game. This is not a hard reset where you restore your console to the factory defaults. Only perform a hard reset if you are instructed to by an appropriate tech support person, or if you really enjoy that brand new out of the box feeling.

Delete your local game save file.
Do NOT delete all saves! If you delete both the cloud and local save file at once you will kill all your characters, progress, items, everything for that game. I’ve yet to encounter a situation where this helps with Borderlands 3. I include it because it is a common “first line” solution for many games.

Fully power cycling your console clears the local cache and will resolve many problems. (Turning the machine off and back on does not clear the local cache.) On some occasions, corruption can occur in a local save file but it’s not as common as having issues with your local cache, for Borderlands 3. If you have concerns about your ability to do either please check Microsoft’s site on how to perform a hard restart, or how to manage game saves. The two steps listed here will resolve many issues, but not all. It is advisable to reach out to appropriate parties for technical support for issues that are persistent.

Here is a link providing simple instructions from another source on how to hard restart your console.

A quick disclaimer: I am not employed by Microsoft, 2K, or Gearbox. This post is simply sharing my experiences. I wouldn’t share any information I believe could be harmful, but any actions you take are your own responsibility.

Another crash on XB1X. This time in Sanctuary trying to scroll through the menu after selling items at the vendor, so nothing that should be too taxing. Got kicked back to XB home screen and am now waiting for Claptrap to finish dancing across the screen as I type this

I just give up for now untill they (hopefully) fix this. With all the lag , frameratedrops and crashes this game has become completely unplayable. So far GB is only fokking up this game with every update. It’s almost as if this is a new starting company with their first ever product.

I’ve done these things multiple times. They didn’t make any difference. The problem is the game itself.

Mine crashed twice yesterday I a span of about an hour.

Just running through the Cartel Mansion. I was using a brainstormer one time and then it happened when I was using a hell shock.

Just froze and I had to exit game from Home menu on Xbox.

I’ll echo the sentiment that it’s mostly likely specific modifiers - Drone Ranger being one - either individually or in combination. Combine multiple modifiers with the added enemies and effects of the Cartels event, and you have a pretty good stress test going. Some combinations obviously cause that test to fail. So, if you do submit a report ticket for a crash, please include information such as Cartels on/off, mayhem level, and which modifiers.

Since I hadn’t experienced the issue until this latest patch it’s hard to believe it hasn’t been addressed yet. Have GB or 2K said anything other than “oh yea, we’re aware of the issue and have passed it on”?

I’ve read so many comments from this past week from people saying its game breaking for them. Number one they’re unable to play the game due to the disruptions, but even more important for them, they don’t want the game to trash their $500 investment.

It’s a sad state for gaming these days.

Oh, and I keep saying this over and over again, but where’s the testing prior to release? Do they even test at all? I imagine things near crunch time and they only have time to quickly check the PC and then cross their fingers wrt consoles.

Nah here is a clip of clone and grenade on M10, my modifiers included the Jimmy shutter/lag special.
