I think she’s fine. I haven’t had issues with her post-nerf, I’d say increase her healing, so that way she can support better.
Good to hear!
37-2 was an outlier, but I was consistently wrecking with her. Maybe I was just facing unequipped players or players new to the game. I like her the way she is, so much so that I’m bias; so can’t really tell if she’s in a good place.
Only one thing needs to be done…and there is a second thing which could be looked at and slightly modified.
Most important in my mind is the auto-aim/auto-lock from her healing beam.
Remove the auto-aim/auto-lock from her healing beam. Make it shoot fire bolts or something which can heal her, you can even up the DPS and Heal/Hit over the steady tick that currently goes on. Just make the opposing player have to have some skill to land that shot.
At the moment, Ambra can just jump around any character in close combat and know that as long as the opposing character stays engaged she is doing damage and gaining life…while the opposing player has to keep complete track of the ambra (Melee, and an issue as is seen via all the 3rd person requests) or try to back-pedal to gain distance away from the healing beam while also trying to land shots. (Ranged, and difficult to do given how fast Ambra is)
Secondly, (and I will toss this out there…but I don’t think this needs to change if you remove the auto-aim/auto-lock from healing beam) her flame shield could be looked into.
Modify the helix option with the burst speed (reduce speed, put it on a tier where it won’t be auto-choosen, ect.) or reduce overshield amount.
Anyway, Ambra does so well in close-combat situations…because there is no skill involved in both doing damage and gaining health. Add back the skill element and that should be enough to balance the character…as a secondary you could look at her flame shield…but I don’t think that is nearly as important.
A comment if I may, I noticed that the auto-lock can get confused with other players and bots at times, generally this seemed to come about if the victim jumped around a bit. So I think if you have future problems jump around and it could save your butt lol.
Won’t say that this is a problem but watching all the Early Access streams these last couple days, every time i saw Ambra on the field she was always the character with the most damage given and by a long shot. A support character out dmg all their companions regardless of class, ouch …
Does the off hand melee break her auto-lock beam ?
Yes, one or the other.
Personally I feel that so many of the players in the Beta really little to NO idea about how MOBA’s work that most likely many times players were miss playing the character they were using. When this is combined with the fact if they do know how to play their character they most likely really do not understand how to play against the characters they are facing on the other team. This causes character like Ambra, to seem far more powerful then they really are.
If you can range attack Ambra, you should be range attacking her. She is designed to survive 1v1 melee fights without CC’s. But if it is a two on her she is not going to be doing so well. Add in a stun or knock up or slow her and most likely she is going to die.
But more then anything, most of the Beta it felt to me like too many players thought this game was a FPS game only. They did not realize that characters, for the most part are designed to be played at certain ranges and playing them at other ranges gave them disadvantages and gave advantages to the people they were facing. Also I watched time after time too many players over chase and end up dead because of it.
Ambra is a close to melee range character. So when you are facing her with a long to middle range character you should try to say at your max range and do not let her close the gap to you. Do not chase much for the kill, just be happy that they have backed out of the lane/area and try to push while you can with an advantage for your side. Chasing a Ambra is never smart because she can drop sunspots in the direction she wants to escape towards, which will heal her and do damage to you, then turn back to you and use her basic attack to damage you even more while healing her even more.
But players who have never played Ambra, or worst yet never faced her before will not know some of the things from the paragraph above. This is part of the learning curve for MOBA’s is the learning of characters, what they each can do, what ranges they are best played at and what ranges best counter them along with tactics which are best used to counter them.
Pub games are good for more solo type characters, Ambra, Galilea, Isic, Miko basically characters that can heal themselves and sustain lots of combat or characters like marquis and om that can stay back from combat. You get an unfair showing from those types, and from more team based characters that require actual tactics, like Kleese, Toby, Deande, Caldarius are overshadowed.
In competitive play Kleese and Deande come out and show their true power. El Dragon after level 5 as well as Boldur can solo Ambra or Gal no problem. The thing is they as well as rath and other melee require situational awareness, and decent protection against range from teammates. I would Argue a Kleese in a competitive team outshines and Ambra by quite a lot. Ambra having no real range is particularly vulnerable in competitive matches, and her inability to outdo many well played heroes makes her far from broken.
Hard to say. I think we’ll have to wait for LIVE before I can make a true call if they need to nerf further. I will say a few things, her kit is amazing, aoe that heals (sunspot), staff that can be talented to heal, aoe-cone to take down minion waves. aoe ult to nuke minions/sentries, to top it all off if she gets in trouble the OS passive. Quite redic to have ALL those on one character.
Lastly, pre sure I got my “Worthy of Song” using that character.
Off topic but, Worth of Song had to be the most badass title in the Beta right?
Made me feel like a badass. Noticed I got more aggro from teams that seemed to understand what the title represented
They would try so hard even over-extending to try to get the kill, to no avail of course haha
I really agree with this, I’ve seen amazing players dominate every match with every character they select and I’ve seen characters both dominate and get destroyed based on the player controlling them.
They weren’t pub games per se though, they were mostly premade games from the GBX booth, including players from the GBX team itself. Not only that but there was a high usage of Deande, El Dragon and the likes ( only seen one Kleese though ) so i don’t think the lack of character diversity was a problem here.
I actually think i saw little very few starting toons being played, apart from a couple Rath’s, Marquis and the occasional Orendi, the only one being almost always present was Miko due to his healer class. It was interesting seing that some pub favorites like OM or ISIC not being actively chosen in these games.
I don’t consider her OP by any means, just found it odd that her character was always at the top of the scale dmg wise considering the use of more dmg focused toons by other skilled players.
Not just on the Open Beta, seen so many players on these early access streams focusing so much on their KDA and just ignoring their map objectives and then end up head scratchin - and cursing the game - for the reason of why they lost even though they “decimated” their opposing team that i started to wonder how they got their EA keys.
There were good games though, the last one i saw from StealthShampoo was certainly rather enjoyable to watch.
I watched those games on twitch and they were definitely not competitive. There were some competitive players but there was little to no teamwork and strategy, pretty much just pub games. Like I said when there isn’t much teamwork and its a more pub mentality you are going to see ambra and gal do work as well as marquis. Basically solo type characters with sustain and decent killing power.
Totally agree with you with people worrying about KDA over objectives. Pretty much a pub mentality, which is pretty expected from new games. Give it a little time and stuff will change, the players will evolve and form their niches, even in pub games.
Kinda hard to have true competitive games when there are only around 300 players at most right now but i definitely saw some games where there really was good team play and good communication between players considering they don’t play everyday together like in a competitive team.
And it kinda sucks that there aren’t more 5v5 player games on the GBX booth, they - and 2k - kinda dropped the ball here, pretty sure that if they opened up their booth more to the fans, there would be a lot more PvP footage and player attraction. Every time i see their booth stream at PAX it’s pretty much only filled with their “endorsed” streamers and not much more, but that’s another issue.
Again i’m not actually disagreeing with you, quite to the contrary, but it still feels really odd that she can out damage everyone with such ease. Like seeing a dwarf out run an elf.
I hear you but thats just the nature of the character, able to do lots of things decently but not the best. Her regular attack being autoaim helps new people as well. Playing her at a competitive level though is far harder and you are outclassed by good players that use range or have miko’s healing them, or just later levels as her damage drops off compared to assassins and most brawlers.
Edit: Though she is definitely capable in the right hands
But yeah I think this game has a massive amount of potential but being as its pretty complex I think it will be more of a slow growth over time. They are ahead of the curve with this game I think. It will catch traction as long as GBX keeps supporting it and it keeps getting support from a community.
Actually i was watching a replay from a BB game and thinking about it, it actually makes sense that she can end up on the top of dmg dealt stats. If you spam your Sunspots you’ll be doing a lot of indirect dmg on top of your own damage, considering that you can spam them quite a bit, add all that in the span of a 30min game and it can all add up quite a bit.
She really is a pretty versatile supporter, maybe THE most flexible supporter now that i think about it. I’m now considering give playing her another try when the game releases.
She is really fun to use as a controller of the tempo of the game. She can push well, can sub in as tank for a little every once and a while, (early levels) and can kind of manipulate the game. I felt like a control player kind of pushing the line where I wanted it half the time with my spots being placed in the right spot. Her sunspots being debuffs were great for singling out enemy’s for the team to focus as well. I felt like games were much more under my control when I played her vs any other hero. She plays exactly how I like to play the game so I loved her.
I like her and used to main her but found her way too easy to play. Top kills, top assists, top shards. She has no weaknesses I can think of. Auto tracking short ranged attack with lifesteal. Long ranged staff attack via mutation. Auto overshield on low health. Very high damage ult.
IMO the only thing she has that isn’t OP are the sunspots. They don’t last very long (unless you use Gauntlet mutation) and easy to destroy but can be used strategically. I think she’d be better with more of that kinda stuff and less ‘auto win’.
