I have way too many mules/backpack characters. And yes, I level i-their backpacks to a certain extent.
Every time they get loaded, to store or retrieve an item, they do a sweep around Sanctuary for eridium. My experience is that I can always get 1 to 9 eridium bricks per pass of the Crimson Raiders headquarters and Scooters garage. It adds up pretty quickly.

Just for context, I’ve accumulated a LOT of stuff and rarely dump a legendary, unless it’s something like a WTF shield which none of my characters ever use. Here on Xbox (where I’m playing tonight) for example I’ve farmed or found 187 (one hundred and eighty seven) Lyuda/Lydmila snipers of many levels and elements that I’m keeping in various backpackers, so yeah, you gotta give 'em backpack space.
And just counted, there are 35 lockers/washing machines/boxes combined in the Headquarters, Scooters, and the walk between the two. Not all will be available, sometimes they spawn open/empty. That number means it’s highly likely you’ll find some rid-rock each time you pass through. As I mentioned I always get at least one, and have had many spawns where 4-stacks have appeared, again, my personal total is 9 in one pass.
Oh, and you can of course always pass a high-priced weapon down from another character and play the slot machines, I get lots of iridium from that. One or two OP-level guns in a level 9 characters hands gives them (usually) a couple of million to gamble with. Also gives you all the cash hoard badass ranks in one fell swoop.

once i got a max level character on 2 accounts (one is salvador and one is maya). I cross-save it and save the duplicate as a new save, to create multiple storage.

what i do is use a 2nd controller to get the storage character then do the inventory glitch (wherein you marked your inventory as trash then sell and buyback it, it will go to your backpack instead of inventory) so you have 4 gun slots, 1 slot each of shield, relic, grenade and com available.
