Eldrid & Nanotech

Took some heavy damage in Combat just now and Alani said “Nooooo my Nanotech…I mean…,communion with nature!”

I had always assumed Eldrids were like magical nature beings who maybe USED tech stuff but weren’t MADE of tech.

Are they really just super technologically advanced?

Nanotech in BB really makes me think of Digistruct tech from Borderlands…

They mention that she has “water-soluble nanotech” the understanding I have with her, is that she has the ability to control water but not to create it, and uses nanotech to do so.

There is no doubt the Eldrid as faction, composed of countless races, is very advanced on every standpoint, be it technologically or else. Though I doubt any of the Eldrid-BB is made from tech as we know it.

The nanotech Alani mentioned is used by her to control her water. The water in infused with millions of nanobots. its not known how she realises the control over the nanobots though.

As SciFi-nerd I can assure you that theres alot of technology with biological roots.

For example the Wraith from Stargate who grow their ships and weapons from organic tissue even with functional hyperdrives. All their tech is “natural” , here an example

There are also races as the Yuuzhan-Vong from StarWars who developed a very diverse bioengineering & genetic modifications.
Or races as the Tlailaxu from Dune who altered their whole species by bioengineering. (<-creepy as hell!!!)
Species 8472 from StarTrek:Voyager uses purely “selfgrown” bio-tech as well. Those even have bloodcells similar to organic nanobots. Organic nanobots are also mentioned in “Andromeda” if I remember correctly.

Biology and technology are no opposites really, I´m sure Mellkas claw is bioengineered (Yuuzhan-Vong-style) which is a very high developed technique.

@FlamesFor All I´m a lady which likes it to be called Sir  No need to apologize

SciFi is my weakspot… I could have gone further, but I hought I leave it to better known franchises xD
As for BB: Miko is one of my favourite fictional aliens. The lore of the planetsized Mikolopria is one of the most beautifull ideas for an alien organism ever.

I assume the nanotech is also what allows her to be out of water as well. She mentions in her lore about how she’s in a tank when she calls Galilea.

Pretty sure her species is/was naturally amphibious. In her lore, there’s references to “the currents, the climes, the tides” as well as stone, air, and water. It’s not definitive, but it definitely feels to me like they’re a species that’s equally comfortable/capable of air or water.

As for Alani going into the isolation tank, keep in mind that she’s used to being on a planet where water is everywhere so that she’s used to being able to plop into the water for a swim whenever she felt like. She’s pretty much all dry now (since no one else can breath water, afaik) so she goes there to get some of that feeling back (there’s also a tragic melancholic element, in my mind, since she’s mourning the loss of her planet and people). Being able to swim and be in water is normal to her, even if it wasn’t constant, and she wants some of that normalcy back.

Of course, whenever I think too hard about Alani’s species or Akopos, I give myself a headache. How does a freshwater planet work? Oceans are salty because Earth is a rocky planet and water is the universal solvent (e.g. it’s salty because rocks are salty and water has little bits of rock in it). You can’t have a freshwater planet that still has dry land. But we’re outright told it’s a freshwater ocean planet (which is why the Jennerit were all “oh nice!” about it). For her species, why are her gills on her ribs (which looks cool but doesn’t really work with a rib cage) instead of on her neck (which is meaty and could easy develop a valve to prevent air from entering the water breathing parts and water from entering the air breathing parts). Also, why does she wear loose cloth clothing which would get waterlogged and unmanageable in water (which also brings up the whole issue of hair)?

Gonna stop myself there. Headache.

As to the OP, I suggest checking out the Sufficiently Advanced Bamboo Technology page on tvtropes, which is what the Eldrid use. They have super awesome technology that is designed to meld with and be indistinguishable from nature or seemingly natural processes. Basically, not only is their technology on par with or better than the Jennerit, it’s so amazing that it doesn’t even look like technology.

Even some of that gives me a headache when I think about it too much, like how do you ensure stable information storage when you’re storing the information in the junk DNA of a tree/plant (you can’t store it in the functional DNA because then you’re telling it to stop being a tree)? The entire reason a vast majority of our DNA is junk DNA is because that’s how you become immune to/resistant to viruses. Are the Codex trees somehow immune to all viruses? Do viruses simply not affect Codex trees? Do they have some kind of internal information validation system that makes sure that information isn’t modified when a virus occurs? If so, how does it work?

Once again, gonna stop there. Only headaches and rants go down that path.

@Kitru

Great post, thank you!

I LOVE tvtropes, by the way, I’m on that site like all the time!

She has lungs. One of her “calls” after being respawned in PVP is to mention she forgot how they work.

She has gills on her neck as well. The ones on her ribcage may be there for extra oxygen when she’s swimming quickly.

Who says she wears clothes while swimming? image

The majority of her fellow Battleborn have hair, so she probably grew hers out to better fit in. Going around bald-headed would have made her more of an outcast than what she is. She may also have it for the same reason we do: to protect her head from the sun.

Just remember that it’s always first and foremost down to aesthetics. If the character doesn’t look right, it doesn’t matter how functional they may be because who’d want to play them? Just look at the comments for Kid Ult and you’ll see what I mean.

That’s what I tell myself whenever I begin down this path. I was going to go into the ludicrousness of a water breathing/living species having basically the same physical construction as humans but made sure to stop myself when I realized I was trying to rationalize an aesthetically pleasing water monk alien that throws water and heals people with the wave of a hand (and splash of water).

Going along with my previous tvtropes reference… The Rule of Cool is alive and well in Battleborn. If anything, because it’s Gearbox, the Rule of Cool is being pushed to new and awesome limits.

I personally don’t believe in magic in anything even in harry potter there is a kind of science to it the only true magic that i would belive in is creating something from nothing also i think you are misinterpreting the way eldrids are i always assumed eldrids were extremely technologically advanced or given technology and they have kind of just continued with it i am under the belief that if we gave native Americans technology of the future they would do way different things with it that would help them feel more connected with nature rather than use it for finding another sustainable planet or what ever
