Further help with adding a ship?

I am trying to add a fighter-class ship of my own into the game, I have my own model and texture ready, but after following the Kadeshi Swarmer tutorial I received an access violation upon loading the ship. I thought it may be a lack of textures, but other tutorials seem to suggest a ship could be placed in game even without textures. So what could have caused the error?

The ship I am adding has two texture sheets, one for the fuselage and the rest the wings. The game seems to use tga textures with a special naming scheme. How do I get all that to work?

Access violations are the next to absolute worst errors to debug. The first question we need answered though is when does the game crash? During the match load screen, once the game is loaded, etc?

It crashed halfway through the loading. When I come back later from work I will try a simpler model and see if it was manual error somewhere along the way. Will report when I have something. Thanks for the help.

Do you start the game with the command -luatrace as to get the debugging log?

Add -traceHODs to you’re shortcuts to have the HOD in the LOG.

You haven’t adding the SpeedBurst Markers. Go into the ship folder and see into the .events file and comment the line you don’t use… Or add the marker in the 3dsmax or your 3d software with valid name.

Thanks, the example never came with special ability markers. By replacing the Kushan Interceptor with my ship instead, I managed to get my ship in game without crashing, but now it is completely transparent.

Does it matter how close you zoom in? Like does it show up if you’re right up close to it or anything?

Doesn’t show up regardless. Probably a problem with the textures, though. I think the game only reads tga files. Is there a naming scheme for texture sheets or it doesn’t matter as long as it shows up fine before I convert it into .dae?

Have you made sure the .tga files do NOT have RLE compression? If they have the compression, the game will not read them properly AFAIK.

Ok, the hierarchy looks fine. Can you show us the materials? Or just post a copy of the dae somewhere and I will take a look… I suspect a material issue.

By the way you need to change UVSets[1] to UVSets[2] if you are making a badge…

Here it is. The ship is called the Arrowhead and it uses two texture files, one called “CFA” for the main body and another called “Arrowhead” for the wings. I have no idea if the game understands such texture nomenclature.

Ok, the problem is your material/texture names. Material and texture names are important for HODOR. Your textures are called:

  • CFA.TGA
  • Arrowhead.TGA

You will need something like:

  • xx_DIFF.TGA
  • xx_NORM.TGA
  • xx_GLOW.TGA
  • xx_SPEC.TGA
  • xx_REFL.TGA

Where “xx” = “CFA” and “Arrowhead” for your two texture files. You will also need xx_PAIN, xx_TEAM and xx_STRP if you are using team/stripe painting.

The materials need to be called something like MAT[arrowhead]_SHD[ship]. The SHD tag tells HODOR which shader to use (in this case the ship shader). Here is an example from one of my ships (Blender screenshot, DIFF only shown):

For your ship I would suggest:

  • MAT[CFA]_SHD[ship]
    • IMG[CFA_DIFF]_FMT[DXT1] --> CFA_DIFF.TGA
    • IMG[CFA_NORM]_FMT[DXT1] --> CFA_NORM.TGA
    • IMG[CFA_SPEC]_FMT[DXT1] --> CFA_SPEC.TGA
    • IMG[CFA_GLOW]_FMT[DXT1] --> CFA_GLOW.TGA
    • IMG[CFA_REFL]_FMT[DXT1] --> CFA_REFL.TGA
  • MAT[Arrowhead]_SHD[ship]
    • IMG[Arrowhead_DIFF]_FMT[DXT1]
    • IMG[Arrowhead_NORM]_FMT[DXT1]
    • IMG[Arrowhead_SPEC]_FMT[DXT1]
    • IMG[Arrowhead_GLOW]_FMT[DXT1]
    • IMG[Arrowhead_REFL]_FMT[DXT1]

EDIT: Actually only the “_DIFF” is technically necessary to define in the DAE file. HODOR will pick up the others automatically, if they exist.

Feel free to come back if you still can’t get it to work.

Really, the easiest thing to do for your first ship is to take copies of the Kad_Swarmer files and modify them.

Put it in the same folder as copies of “Kad_Swarmer_DIFF.TGA” and “Tai_Interceptor_DIFF.TGA” and it should work.
