Just watched this video on gaming industry secrets: www.youtube.com/watch?v=gcnj7s0fts0
How many of these do we think borderlands falls into?
The idea that review scores can impact bonuses, meaning development staff might focus on whatever fads critics like, to get good scores, instead of making the games they actually want, or even games that players will want/enjoy, is both interesting and frustrating to me.
Interested to see what people think of what goes on behind closed doors, gaming wise.

Awesome video …

Not sure about how many that Borderlands fall into but I was very surprised to learn that Call of Duty MW2 was the most expensive video ever produced though …

I did not see any secrets in this video - only facts that have been published elsewhere already. Raising consumer awareness is a good thing though.
On a sidenote: This woman needs some training, she talks way to fast.

Yeah, these aren’t really secrets exactly, but it’s always good to know about their existence.

The problem comes in trying to correlate them with a game just because a game is perceived to be doing badly. We could do the same with Cyberpunk, or Arkham Knight, or whatever.

A good example is assuming developers make a game that include ā€œfads critics likeā€. This isn’t what the review score-to-bonus mechanic creates. What the review score fixation creates is a) an excuse to not give bonuses if the game doesn’t reach an arbitrary threshold. This benefits management (and the investors). Additionally, b) is it normalises crunch, because developers feel pushed to go the extra mile to try and secure that bonus. The problem is crunch inherently weakens a game because developers stress themselves working hours they shouldn’t, and the product suffers as a result. This also reflects on management (but is very easy to twist onto the developers themselves, which is a part of why crunch is so awful).

That’s why the answer to this thread is ā€œnobody knowsā€ (unless it was leaked or published at some point with regards to BL3’s development).
