I have never found that gun to be any good either…and you’re the first to say he likes it.
Dude
I would very much enjoy a video display of someone doing something good with it
I have a corrosive one that does fine. Remember, I play at OP3, not OP8, and I play with BAR on (about 20% across the board). It’s no Pimpernel, but it kills Loaders (for example) without issue. The damage output falls below the parity line for damage output, but the damage output is otherwise fine. I have a minute or two if the first few moments in Washburne Refinery with it - I’ll look after uploading it today.

Aim at their feet (compensating for the arc) and spam the trigger, it is also decent for lobbing over barriers. It isn’t that great for a lone enemy (unless it is big), and even then it doesn’t hold a torch to the DPUH or the other guns in my inventory.
It is a backup gun for me, not my greatest, but it serves its purpose.
I couldn’t have said it better. I’m still not sure why shots bounced at their feet is better… maybe because it keeps shot that would otherwise whiff within range for some extra splash damage, but there you go.

Out of interest, why do you play at OP3?

…on Tannis’ advice from Digistruct Peak:
- For the few gun types whose damage is actually unusable (and I have a pretty high tolerance for bad guns), this gives me enough headroom to buff them to a usable caliber. What I mean by this is, for example, I use E-Tech Spiker pistols at OP8 in my OP3 play, which puts their damage where I think it should be. The Commerce, Hyperion E-Tech shotguns, and the Scorpio, for example, only need like a two-level buff to produce damage on par with their counterparts. The Retcher, E-Tech Railers, and BlASSters are examples of guns that I bring in at OP8, but pretty much everything else is OP3.
- This also goes for shields, but besides the Bee (which I bring in at level 68), they’re all OP8 because I want the spike, nova, and other offensive capabilities to actually do meaningful damage. Depending on the shield, they can still only tank one or two good shots, which is about where I want a shield anyway.
- If I want a more difficult game, I take my character with this gear set balanced around OP3 up to another OP level (if I want it easier, I choose a lower OP level). For those of you looking for a game mode harder than OP8, try it with an OP3 gear set. I love the fact that I can basically fine-tune this every time I start playing on a whim legitimately.
OP3, for me, is the perfect balance between leaving enough headroom for buffing weak gear and providing the biggest available difficulty range.

TLDR: It evens the playing field between the way OP changes enemy health, shields and regen, and the effective damage output/resistance of the equipment.

You get more damage from the splash of both the original grenades and the child grenades. When aimed high (center of mass) it seems that the child grenades don’t fall within their splash radius.

Aha, I see! It’s great to see OP levels used so cannily and creatively. I wish I had such a precise knowledge of gear capabilities… Maybe with a few thousand hours more

Just pick one you like or think would be fun and give it a spin, ask how to make it work. The Commerce, for example, only has a cool skin going for it as far as I know, but I like the way it looks, so use it in the role of, “non-E-Tech shock Hyperion SMG”.

Do you use the Nasty Surprise at all? I’ve never worked it out and it seems to have a painful damage penalty but your system might make it a bit more viable…

I use a slag one for slag application mostly (for which it works quite well). I don’t think I’ve actually tried a non-slag one for damage though (now I’m curious).
I’m not saying “normal” guns shouldn’t be in the game. Almost every non-unique gun in Borderlands 2 is actually a point-and-shoot “normal” gun and the whole point of the unique guns is to have a gimmick or special effect. That’s why they’re unique. My beef is with people who want even the unique guns to shoot like regular real world guns. I’ve even seen people asking for guns in future Borderlands games to loose their outrageous colorful skins in favor of more realistic ones. That’s missing the whole point of the unique guns and asking for a major change in style. They basically want Borderlands to be more like every other FPS out there. It doesn’t make any sense to me.

Actually i use shock bearcat with my backdraft maya all the time. If you are familiar with how i play with backdraft, then imagine how i use it. Think carpet bombing. Not easy to get used to it tho.
Yeah, but you have to admit that your build is a bit out of the ordinary
I actually wrote that in my first reply, but deleted it just before posting

I’m with you I don’t even care for most red text guns that are just normal shooting. I like splits or effects or something to make it a bit different.
We have more than enough normal shooting guns. Its figuring out guns like the Pimpernel that kept me playing, not normal guns that I used in goldeneye back in the day.

I look at it this way:
You can play through the ENTIRE campaign using standard guns (no elements, no anything), the only real exception is the one part where you need to set Varkids on fire.
If you learn to use the elements correctly, you get a bonus.
If you learn to stack and use your skills correctly, you get a bonus.
If you learn to use the gimmicks of the equipment, you get a bonus.
If you learn to use the physics and AI, you get a bonus. (Grenade jumping, Causing enemies to fight each other)
Conceivably you (in theory) could progress all the way to OP8 without using any of these bonuses. It would be hard, but in theory it can be done.

I started just luring some varkids close to a fire melon and then shooting it… quick ‘n’ dirty.
