Gearbox seeks dev collaboration for next Duke Nukem

I hope it has all the good Jokes which made DNF popular I thought DNF was over the top.
Not everyone thought that I really don’t know what people expect. I suppose they wanted a game that was more serious like a Punisher Comic without the punch lines. It had to have a sense of Humor otherwise it would fall flat on it’s face. I had over 400+ hours on the Steam version for MP kinda hard to find games now but nothing is forever even Duke Nukem.

Maybe they weren’t expecting strippers to flash their titties at you in a shooter game :P.

It is not required to play any past Duke Nukem game, but Duke3D is still being played, even with Megaton edition. I’ve played Duke Nukem 1, 2, 3D, Manhattan Project, Forever, Time To Kill.

John Romero and Adrien Carmack just announced that they are going to make an old school, fast paced shooter.
I wonder if this could be the game they want to work on?
Pitchford seems very cheap, and that could be why John is trying to make 700k in kickstarter, to help GB suplement the game?

Same, but I would say i’m quite suspicous about how Randy connected to this project. Jon have said: ‘‘after we’ll reach that goal [$700,000], some great folks will help us fund the game’’ – it would be interesting to see Gearbox as the one who funds the project.

Duke nukem have been some great games as “3D” and “time to kill”, but “forever” is not good as the the other. I may say it sucks but maybe forever is just different.
I would be ok for gear box back on it, for they repair their mitake. :stuck_out_tongue:

Gearbox have no mistake to correct.

All they did was produce it. They brought the game 3DR/Triptych made to the players.
Randy openly said if they were making the game themselves, they would’ve done a LOT things completely differently. But, that wasn’t the purpose here.

It was about bringing an end to this era. Bringing DNF to completion and to the fans. Good, bad… whatever. It was about closing the book on this era.

Hmm so if the game was a success and not an all-time failure would gearbox be crediting Triptych or whoever actually made it? GBX’s name is on it and it’s theirs, same with Aliens Colonial Marines and TPS, regardless of who actually made those games.

I hope that it is good because who disliked the original, but the odds are probably against it, especially if they are outsourcing it.

On triptych website, you can see that they have made Duke Nukem. Truth about its development is literally everywhere on the internet, but people are too lazy to find the truth and rather bash Gearbox, because it’s easier.

Much like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D is a challenging experience to recapture. Both the originals were cutting edge for their time and standard bearers for the emergence of a genre. In orer to bring that same sense of intrigue, they need to branch out and create something truly unique to the IP. The overtly linear campaigns they were the forebears of, are now a over saturated styling in today’s market.

If anyone wants to shepherd Duke Nukem into the future, they need to try something new and expand the the idea of what Duke Nukem could become, instead of trying to recreate the concept of what it was. Otherwise, it’ll be just another typical humdrum shooter with goofy humor.

In my opinion, that’s the best way to carry the legacy forward. Break the mold, expand it’s world, and become the new model of what a shooter can be.

But, you don’t have to “break the mold” to make a great game, or a great new addition to the series.

The new DOOM doesn’t reinvent the genre by any means, but it’s still an amazing entry in the series and one of the best FPS games in years.
It does this simply because of the love and attention put into it. The polish and dedication to a specific vision.
Wolf:TNO doesn’t break any molds, but it delivers a brilliant new entry in the Wolf series. The Shadow Warrior reboot isn’t amazingly original… but, Flying Wild Hog made it their own.

DNF did not have that.
3DR were trying far too hard to keep up with the market, they lost focus of simply striving to make DNF a great game.

The goal for a new Duke game should be clear before development starts. The style, tone… it should all be nailed in before they even try to create one asset.
You have to be confident in your work, and a lot of DNF just gives me the feeling that 3DR kind of… were not. There are times it hits the right beats, but they are few and far between.
Instead the game feels sporadic. Almost frantic in how it switches gears and alternates back and forth between various styles.
Attempting to grab a hold of a piece of fame from this game or that series. Taking elements that were window dressing (humor and sexual content) in DN3D and using them to try and cover up other short comings.

The next Duke Nukem game doesn’t need to break any molds, it doesn’t need to reinvent the genre.
But, it does need to know what it is completely. That’s how DOOM, Wolf:TNO and SW delivered such amazing titles. The studios knew what they wanted. And they took the right steps to get there.

I haven’t tried the new Doom so I can’t comment on that, but the new Shadow Warrior was mediocre at best. Wolfenstien the New Order and Old Blood had a really interesting story, those reminded me of Return to Castle Wolfenstien. However, overall they were just another FPS. Duke Nukem forever had the attitude down, but nothing else.

Now I know these are just my opinions, and I’m sure some people thought they were amazing. I just don’t see anything special about those games. Duke3D was one of my favorites as a teen, so was the original Shadow Warrior. But back then, they were unique and set a standard for future games. Now, they’re just more of the same in a market flooded with similar games. It’s like clones of clones cloning clones.

Sure, you can play it safe and continue the trend. It’s apparently working for Doom. I just think that if you have a chance to revitalize a legacy, you should usher it into the future, not just keep it stuck in the past.

Again, thats just my opinion.

It is all opinions in the end, but personally… I loved the Shadow Warrior reboot.
It made Lo Wang more then just a one note dick joke. A solid story, great sword combat… beautiful visuals. And a good, lengthy campaign.

As for DNF, I believe the game nailed certain things. The alien designs were great. At times, Duke’s attitude was on point, but then it quickly fell by the wayside in tired attempts to make the game funny or “topical” with dated pop-culture references.
The original DN3D was not a funny game. It was a serious game, with some sarcasm and black humor at times, and most of the comedy came from moments of “I get that reference”. But they were few and far between. The combat and dark nature of the alien invasion were the front of the game’s tone.

And as for DOOM, if you haven’t played it… you can’t say it’s “playing it safe”… because it did not. Just because it calls back to a simpler style of FPS design, doesn’t mean it’s stuck in the past.
The game is brilliant, and one of the best FPS to come out in a long time.

Yeah, Shadow Warrior was a pretty solid take on an old classic. I would totally trust Flying Wild Hog (I think that’s who made it) with Duke Nukem.

Yeah, it was Flying Wild Hog. Devolver Digital owns the SW IP. And I can’t wait for FWH’s sequel… coming in a few months. :smiley:
