I got over this long ago when i realized theres 100s of weapons to try out. And i got bored using the same handful of legendarys. So i started seeing videos showcasing different uniques, purples etc… I also started trying everything no matter what, just to see if i could kill enemies. I discovered just how many great guns there are in bl2. And alot of them not legendary.
Variation and balance are the key words for me. Doing the exact same thing over and over can quickly make a game old. And doing it with super items and super guns that are VERY OP in many situations doesn’t make it better. A guns rarity isn’t really important as long as it does the job. If an item has a certain gimmick, it can be used for plain fun factor.
Been there, admittedly. But nowadays some of my favorite items are either uniques, seraph or of purple rarity (Twister, Yellow Jacket (I consider it a blue since it is unique), Tattler, Blockade, Coach Gun, Quad, Development respectively).
Before I got smart enough to know different I used to have the same mindset, however after a while with experimentation and reading on the old forums I started deviating away from the Yellow Brick Road of legendary items. Now some of my favorite items are non-legendary.
There are a few legendary items that are hard to beat in their category, such as the Striker, while others I toss into the trash before my finger prints become noticeable like what I do with the Skullmasher. Yet some of the most powerful weapons or even the most useful I have encountered in the Jakobs family are blue red text firearms such as the Hydra, Buffalo, Orphan Maker, Cobra (with an explosive relic), Twister, and a few others.
However if there is a weapon that broke the golden camel’s back in regards to legendary items it is the Buffalo which is hands down my favorite sniper rifle of all time and is a close runner up to the Unforgiven as my all time favorite weapon.
Same here. I mean I do LOVE some of the things offered in the Legendary category (DPUH, Bonus Package, HoT, Various Class Mods), but there is definitely some better stuff out there.
Case in point: Blue Class Mods. There are some times you will know a skill that you will need, and the +6 is BEAUTIFUL!
The one Unique that flummoxes me is the Cobra…I have one, a nice one, and it just doesn’t cut it. Regular snipers (Muckamuck) work so much better.
I got it and was like “!!!”, Then I used it for a bit…stopped and verified it wasn’t severely underleveled, tried again. Now it sits in my inventory just chilling in case I severely missed something.
Also the PBFG is a pretty damn beautiful gun, especially with Slag. Pop of with that into a room full of enemies (or Digi) and lay down blanket fire with DPUH! Drops things fast. PBFG is a Po’ Man’s Norfleet.
Another way to look at it is using legendary gear that would normally be sold or packed to a mule. Case in point for me is the Rolling Thunder- got one last night with the new Axton and decided to give it a try with an explosive relic and a Grenadier com- I’m somewhat surprised at how effective it is (although it’s not a great FFL weapon with Do or Die). Except for the main class mods and the Slagga (which are all under-leveled BTW) I’ve tried to stay away from most of the usual legendary or unique gear that I used with my Original 6 VH so right now, no Antagonist, Magic Missiles, Rubi, Heart Breaker, very limited DPUH use (i.e. for raid bosses only- not general mobbing), Shams, etc…
Many of the best items in the game are blue or purple. Grog, SandHawk, Pimpernel, Monk class mods, Magic Missile x4, Anarchists, Plasma Casters, etc.
Since my most-played characters relied so much on specific blue-colored gear, legendary grade was mostly used to keep myself at maximum money capacity.
In my opinion a good way to play without relying on specific gear is with a melee-centric psycho, I’ve played from lvl33 to 72 for the most part only with the shield/relic/com/grenade slots filled.
I never really got wrapped up in the “orange or bust” mind set in BL2. Most legendary items are something I farm for fun, not for use.
Pimpernel broke my gold rush.
I remember using Quads and Ravagers and Muckamucks when people didn’t cherish them as much, back when the level cap was still 50.
Sandhawk and Pimp (maybe also the Grog). 'nuff said.
Boredom will be the next jump over those two guns. Or three, if you prefer.
At first, I wanted rare weapons just to see how they actually handled, knowing that they tended to have some gimmick, for better or worse, that could be used in combat. I saw the pro tip about “Rarity isn’t everything…”, but it didn’t sink in until I really started studying weapons to figure out how to get the most out of them and really experienced the disconnect between rarity and damage output.
Then the student was ready, and all the stuff was awesome.
4/8 slots in my inventory are gold. The rest are purple and blue/unique rarity. I used to use the same gold gear for EVERYTHING until I realized that changing out some of the legendaries for better lower rarity gear worked out to my advantage.
Also, I still have a white grenade in my inventory that use every so often.
My Jakobs allegiance Zer0 made me get over it.
My “legendaries are the best” phase didn’t last very long. Very soon I realized that blue uniques were just as good if not better, and that purple were always good too.
As long as it has red text it does something unique so blue uniques basically are legendaries in my book. That being said there’s just so many basic guns that that outright rock that you shouldn’t count them out if you see them. Muckamucks, Sniders, Ravagers, Quads and Coach guns to name just a few are commonly known.
A couple less mentioned ones I really enjoy encountering while leveling up a new character are Maliwan SMG’s and most types of Jacobs revolvers. Both are pretty much outclassed by other things on OP levels while still can be made to work but while I’m leveling up a new character boy do those things melt faces.
I’ve always found plenty of ‘normal’ gear useful, I just don’t have the patience to farm gear at lower levels knowing that it’s going to be outclassed in a few hours in most cases so I make due with what I find.
I’m particularly fond of Hyperion Synergy and Vladof Anarchist pistols (I still have the purple Dva Anarchist that got Gaige and Maya through the last leg of their UVHM story playthroughs), Vladof AR’s, Dahl e-tech AR’s (burst helps me manage ammo consumption), Droogs (especially in corrosive for drilling Constructor eyes), Hyperion and Jacobs shotties, Hyperion and Maliwan plasma casters, absorb or adaptive shields and Tesla 'nades.
Moxxi weapons helped me get over the stigma real quick…heartbreaker, hail, rubi…
