I’ll be rocking FL4K at first, probably with Mr. Chew, since I’m a big dog guy, but Meat Thief looks good, too. I will get through all characters, eventually, as I’m excited for all…melee Amara is gonna be great.
Play them all and see which one is the most fun for you. Until you experience each player in game its impossible to know ahead of time how you will feel about playing each of them.
Allow yourself to be surprised.
im keeping with siren loyalty, love elemental damage
That is exactly what im gonna do aswell, just reversed. Moze co-op Zane solo.
It was a tough choice for me at 1st too but I was always leaning Amara since I love Sirens and Zero was my main in BL2. Then I saw some FL4K… I didn’t know. But then I saw the level 50 Amara gameplay so now I’m good. I’m going to play all 4 like crazy but starting with Amara. I just want to punch things!
I’m having a hard time choosing between FL4K, Moze, and Zane.
Moze- My first choice after seeing the skill trees, but then I saw the gameplay videos from the recent gameplay events, and I am underwhelmed by Iron Bear. Longest cooldown in the game, meh damage output (beat by even blue rarity weapons being used by Moze herself), fast fuel drain (I’ve seen Iron Bear run out of fuel in like 10 seconds), and low base armor (as fast as Iron Bear’s fuel drains, I have still seen Iron Bear get destroyed before running out of fuel). Moze would be an easy first choice for me since I love her Shield of Retribution skill tree and her design, but unless Iron Bear is buffed before release I might have to pick somebody else.
FL4K- FL4K was my initial favorite after seeing the leaked vault hunter designs way back in late 2018. A badass robot with a cool coat and pets? “Sign me up” was my initial impression, I loved Gaige in Borderlands 2 because she had a pet, so to see a new pet vault hunter with a cool design was great. Then I heard about the whole non-binary thing, and that was honestly a bit of a turn-off for me, it just felt like Gearbox pandering to a sub culture to get brownie points. But then I thought, eh, it’s a roleplaying game, I can just play him as a male and ignore Gearbox’s official non-binary stance. Then I heard his voice in the trailer which is great, clearly a masculine voice which helps with my goal to roleplay him as a male programmed robot. But then I saw how popular he was in polls, and I don’t really want to add to the problem of playing the most played hero. So now I’m just on the fence.
Zane- Zane was my initial 3rd pick after the 2018 leaks. I liked his design, but not quite as much as FL4K or Moze. Then I saw his trees and was very impressed by them, especially since he could use 2 action skills at once, one of which is a clone that you can give a legendary gun to, essentially having 2 players in the game which is great for a solo player like me. I also really liked that they gave him an Irish voice.
So yeah, right now it’s a tough choice between the 3. I hope that gearbox buffs iron bear before release, will make my choice alot easier. 1 thing is for sure, I won’t play Amara first. I like her skill trees, but not a fan of her design, muscular women don’t really do it for me, I like petite women like Lilith and Moze.I just don’t like her as much as the previous 2 Sirens, Lilith and Maya.
You can think and say what you want but I found you way of thinking a bit archaic.
Reading this sounded like if it’s a woman you can’t play that character neither. Your are not the character you play… So you can play a non binary, lesbian, gay or whatever.
Then you said you won’t play Amara first because you don’t find her attractive… I find this depressing to see people thinking “I only play people that I find attractive”.
I’m with Pibrac on this…each to their own but you have some pretty irrational reasons for NOT choosing characters. You not choosing FL4K isn’t going to do anything in Gearbox’s eyes and if you play Amara, you’re not even the one looking at her!
It is an old-fashioned way of thinking, and that’s not a bad thing imo. What would be truly terrible is if everybody on the planet accepted this recent trend of wokeness. I hope I never see the day where everybody embraces this current trend of political correctness. Variety is the spice of life afterall.
I never said that I wouldn’t play FL4K if they had feminine programming, though admittedly that would have been weird since they clearly dress in a masculine fashion. I also never said that I won’t play gay or lesbian characters, I have done so in the past, lesbian more so than gay. All I said was that the whole non-binary thing seemed a bit pandery to me, considering the design they went with was clearly masculine. I don’t think there is anything wrong with me roleplaying FL4K as if they are male, especially since they wear masculine clothes and have a masculine voice.
I never said I wouldn’t play Amara, I just said she isn’t in consideration for my first character, because I’m not a big fan of her design while I like the designs for the other 3 characters. I don’t see why you would find somebody preferring to play characters they are attracted to over characters that they aren’t attracted to depressing. Sex sells, that’s a fact. Why do you think companies hire attractive people to model their clothes and merchandise? Do you think that for instance the Tomb Raider series would have been half as successful if Lara Craft had been a beefcake like Amara instead of having her trademark narrow waist and big bust? It’s perfectly ok if other people are attracted to Amara, and I know that there are plenty of people who are, but she just doesn’t do it for me personally.
I don’t see it as a politicaly correct thing more of a do what you want with your life style. If you want to fit into the male category go ahead even if you have two X chromosome.
And yes sex sell but you don’t have to make sex sell, you are the customer. I’ve never been a capitalist and I have always seen sex in advertising a cheap tactic. I’ve never really thought about it if the character is attractive or not when playing one. It looks cool that’s what matter to me.
That sounds awfully ironic and even a bit contradictory coming from a guy who just said he can’t play a non-binary character unless he pretends they’re male and doesn’t like “muscular women” in video games.
Look I understand it may be weird reason not to play a character…but it is a valid reason.
Disclaimer: I would rather date a woman with muscle and curves than someone who looks like like a super model. Fight me
However
If you going to be playing someone for hours on in you dont want to be constantly annoyed by them. If Zaphan doesnt like muscular women then that’s a preference.
So true story time. I put in a hundred hours in AC Creed Odyssey with Kassandra. And some of you know they had a major controversy when they forced a hetero relationship in the DLC. I was playing Kassandra as lesbian (mainly becuase I didnt want to romance dudes). I did the same thing as my Femshep in Mass Effect. That Odysssey DLC made me quit the game.
It may seem irrational but in RPGs you shape the avatar into what you want them to be. If the player doesnt want to be a muscular woman then they shouldn’t be forced to play them.
Same thing with Fl4K. Was the explanation the best…not really. But again, if something annoys you about a character they should have a choice to play them of not. I dont go to Chic Fil La for moral advice, I go there for chicken sandwiches. I dont play video games for politics, I play them for entertainment.
By the way, I never said that I’m not going to play any of the 4 characters. But this is a thread about the character we are playing first. I will play all 4 of them eventually.
Moze Shield of Retribution tree is pretty much like Gaige Ordered Chaos. Little going to her pet and a lot going for her.
The other guns for IB are pretty amazing and do a lot of damage for what Ive seem from the gameplays. The Demolition Woman augments are pretty powerful, as dual miniguns with Cryo+Explosive rounds.
Also, you can rise IB survivability with the recharging shield from the Shield of Retribution first skill line or the armor/fuel boosts from Demolition Woman.
Funny that you should mention Kassandra in AC Odyssey, because I did chose to play her over Alexios, and like you I also chose to play her as a lesbian because I didn’t want to romance men. So it’s not like I’m totally against playing as a muscular woman, I just happen to prefer the design of the other 3 vault hunters. I will play Amara eventually, but this is a thread about our first character.
I also agree with you that people should be able to play a character however they want to play them in an RPG. I’m an old-school gamer, and lament the fact that so many modern RPG’s have lost their role-playing elements, instead forcing things onto their players. I like when a game has alot of choice, from character creation on down to dialogue options. There is a part of me that wishes that Gearbox offered more player choice in Borderlands. I know that a character creator wouldn’t work all that well for the game, but it would be nice to see dialogue options, and it would be nice if they didn’t tell us too much information about the characters, instead letting us choose that information ourselves. That’s kind of my beef with the whole FL4K thing. Why did Gearbox need to tell us their gender identity at all? Why couldn’t we decide that ourselves?
Im not getting into all that. I just want to make builds and shoot things. I’m not expecting an epic choice based narrative experience. I didnt even know about the Fl4k thing TBH…and it dont care. It’s a robot…can I say “it?”
I just think that people should have thier reasons why they do or dont play a character. I don’t want to play Zane becuase I dont want to babysit his action skills. I like Amara’s simple tank and spank playstyle so I think she is the safest choice for a first playthrough. And the fact she has abs is a bonus.
Well, if you’re genuinely asking, Gearbox is requesting members make an effort to use “they/them” in this forum. Here’s the official statement:
Fl4K isnt a person, Fl4k is a robot. Gearbox themselves called Fl4k a robot. I’m not questioning Fl4k’s gender identity, I’m just stating the obvious that Fl4k was built not born.
Cool. So that’s where you stand. You made yourself pretty clear. But so has Gearbox in saying that FL4K as a character is a sentient being and written as non-binary to enhance representation of non-binary people, and I just linked you an official statement saying that. So that part isn’t up to debate. You’re still free to refer to FL4K however you want anywhere else and create all the alternate head canon you wish for the character when you play the game in your own home. Gearbox is just requesting that you make an effort to use “they/them” when addressing FL4K in this forum, that’s all. It’s your choice to respect their wish or not.
Okay…now I dont want to play Fl4k anymore. Not becuase of pronouns, I dont want to be apart of this drama.
