The music in the fan trailer is lightyears better than the official one, but I still think that the flashing text should be removed. Its nature (flash. flash! FLASH!!!) is really distracting from the game screenshots they are showing and some of the text is outright dumb. “Build ships”
Mmm, yeah. Ok. Alright then. Build ships. Sounds cool. They could have written, “Reclaim your home” or “Fight for your freedom”, but instead they chose to let you know you can build ships… something all old-timers new and something new players could probably figure out inside of 30 seconds. They wasted a perfect chance to play off of Homeworld’s great emotional strings.
One of the reasons that Homeworld is still a popular thing today, and the only reason this remastered version was ever put into making was because Homeworld (especially HW1) had an emotional appeal that almost no other games do, and is completely unheard of in the rts genre.
The style of this trailer would fit Call of Duty much better than Homeworld, which should have a more rustic feeling to it rather this… whatever it is.
As for the Hiigarans being human, that’s probably the one thing in the trailer that does not bother me. While we are never explicitly told they are human, I think that it’s made fairly clear from cutscenes that both the Hiigarans and Vaygr are human, and though we never get a close-up of the Taiidani, they appear to be humanoid as well, and I don’t see a reason to assume otherwise. (Which creates a conflict with the “save the human race” part. That’d be like saying, save x nation to save the human race).
“Oh, but they are not from Earth! They can’t be human!” Yeah, I know. But what difference does it really make? They are clearly created to be human. We see multiple pictures of Karan S’jet and also one of Captain Soban and his crew. We see clearly humanoid silhouettes of Hiigarans. Makaan, a Vaygr, has a clearly human face.
All I’m saying is that while they may not be from Earth, there are plenty of suggestions that they are, for all intents and purposes, very much similar to inhabitants of our own little blue planet.
Anyways, all that being said, the games themselves look fantastic and I will be buying them in a week or two once I get my next paycheck. Good job to all the programmers, managers, etc.
Marketing department, please actually take a look at the game and the spirit it has before making any more trailers, or just send a job application to Infinity Ward. I don’t mean to offend you guys, just being a tough customer because I want justice done to one of, if not, the best space rts series of all time. I would love to see a better Homeworld trailer with, you know, more Homeworld in it.
