Gonna try and turn over a new leaf PhD wise and put my nose to the grindstone. I have to be kind to myself when depression comes into play but I also feel better when I do manage to get stuff done. Rather than it being all or nothing I will try and apply myself as best I can - not because I feel oppressed or guilty but because I do genuinely enjoy doing it. And I enjoy having enough knowledge to pretend to be an “expert” (lol!).

I´m not really into Wonderwoman (<- bad pun), but I figured @Daerksiea and others might like a peek at my latest project

It´s an openable keepsake medaillon, Wonderwoman-themed, with a big faux opal in the middle.
To sculpt the sword (4cm) was quiet frustrating, but it came out okay.

I hope I find another locket to craft a second version.

(Wanted to show it off yesterday already, but our ■■■■■■■ internet is so wonky lately that uploading pictures is a true pain >.<)

Busy day upcoming… got up (reasonably) early and edited ‘Grad’, an irritating system that logs dates and summaries of supervisions (I hate bureaucracy). Now off to the doctors’ to try and get an early same-day appointment for meds, going via the library to renew some very overdue books. Rest of the day will be spent writing, I have a deadline on Friday.

Today was full of nature destruction. At work I pulled some weeds for some extra time, and when I got home I picked up the machete and cleared off (part) of the roadside fence.

Today’s victims included

Walnut Trees
Hackberry Trees AKA Sh*#&y Shrubs
Mulberry Trees
The Good Edge on my Machete
and this set of clothes, which I will be burning in a ditch.

Also I didn’t get hit by a dualie and die.

How much work did I do? Well, since it’s the weekend, lemme ask this – work, what is it good for?

Oh, I must’ve misheard… uh huh.

So this post is probably going to be the most smug and braggish I’ve been on these forums, but I don’t care cause I haven’t done ANYTHING like this for at least two years.

We have some people working on cutting/baleing our fields, and the short grass really reveals how many trees I’ve let grow up around the property. That really got to bothering me, so I got the axe, machete, and a nalgene half-full of water and went out to do something about all these trees.

I picked a solitary walnut tree that looked about 20-30 feet tall, with a trunk 20 inches around.

And I cut it down.

After that I chopped all of the branches off of the trunk, and carried them up this hill.

You can see what’s left of the trunk just a bit right of center, it’s that little black post out there.

So I dragged all of the branches over all that distance and up that hill by hand, for a distance that seems to be a tenth of a mile or so. For somebody who hasn’t done or even cared to do anything like this for years, I feel totally pumped that I buckled down on this task as much as I did.

And then there was this. And this is where I got a bit of the crazy in me.

From end to end, that piece is a little over eight feet long. I’m 5’6’’, hovering around 150 lbs. Any reasonable and intelligent person would cut this in two, and carry those totally manageable portions up the hill in the span of… ten minutes?

But no. I had the Crazy and Stubborn in me, and now it was a challenge to see how far I could push my already tired body. For what was at least a half-hour(probably 45 minutes, really), I lugged this damn piece of wood across the field, up the hill, and into our yard. My modus operandi of moving this hunk across flat ground was to squat down, bear hug it as hard as I could, and then waddle 10-20 feet before resting.
I got about a quarter up the hill like that before I gave up on that, another quarter dragging it up the hill after me, and the last half flipping it end-over-end, which was much easier than the other two methods. Bear-hugged it the rest of the way back into the lawn and I was done.

All in all, I was out there doing this for 3-4 hours(6p~10p) with a couple of breaks, but I feel really proud of myself for finding the drive to do something like this. The insides of my forearms and the top of my right shoulder are bruised up pretty well, and I picked up a set of gashes on the inside of my left wrist. Arms, shoulders, lower back, and legs are all sore but I just feel really good about it, totally worth it.

Not at all! You’ve earned the right to brag a bit after all that hard work! (And lol at off of - I can’t argue with a post so full of effort)

For me, I wrote about half of a conference paper proposal on the train yesterday, though I’m not sure how convincing it’s shaping up to be. Did some reading too.

Going to try and do something useful today. I have a supervision this afternoon, which I’m feeling pretty nervous about - I actually think the work I submitted for this is pretty good, which makes things more painful if my supervisor doesn’t like it. We’ll see - either way I can get drunk after.

That’s at 3pm, I may spend the rest of the day in the library, I have a ton of reading to get through in order to decide what I’m going to write about in my next chapter. I’m also going to try and do an hour on my bike as I’ve been stuck writing the last few days and haven’t done any of my weekly exercise!

Going to try and sort a few things out today - I have a risk assessment form to fill out for my trip to Singapore in order to get some funding from my uni. I also need to do a bit of research on the best place to get some Singapore dollars (although what with Brexit and our hung parliament the pound is so weak I’m not going to get much wherever I go). It’s actually a very long time since I had to get cash in another currency - I haven’t been out of Europe for ages and my Irish bank account houses my scant supply of euros.

Then some reading - I need to finish taking notes on Cormac McCarthy’s The Road which I’m writing a paper about. I’ll head to the library after that; my next bit of thesis work is on an author called Seán Ó Faoláin and his short stories aren’t in print so hard to get hold of (plus I have damn all money right now) but fortunately my uni has copies which I must now delve into while hoping desperately that there’s some appropriate material for me to write about.

After that… well I need to pop downhill into the city centre and buy an oven tray as mine has turned to rust. And then I’m going to install Linux on my desktop computer. Oh yeah, and my house is a mess so first task is to sort that out.

My job this week, I’ve been in a 100 degree room with little to no water or drink. It’s a laundry place like 40 miles away from where I live. It’s suppose to be 10 hour days at 9.25$ an hour. I bust my ass, they send me home. I basically do the job or task within three hours and they send me home. The temp agency I’m signed with closes about an hour after I get there to start. There is nobody that speaks english there, no japanese, no german. I can’t understand them. I’ve been winging it for about a week. Also the guy I’m suppose to report too, he took a vacation on the day I started. With no phone, a broken down old junker driving around, I’ve been feeling pretty beat.

It’s terrible boring, it’s labor intensive and I ■■■■■■■ hate it but I need the money so… there. Next.

Well - not a completely unsuccessful day. I filled out my risk assessment form (not really useful… I can take care of myself and I know to avoid mosquito bites - a friend of mine has had Dengue fever and I have no desire to follow in his footsteps with that). Took copies to the administrators in my faculty but they were obviously doing POETS day and weren’t around.

Did manage to buy an oven tray, and very nice it is too. Plus some CDs to back up my cat pictures. Library was closed so couldn’t get on with Ó Faoláin; did some decent exercise instead.
