HW1 Classic Multiplayer via Steam in the Future?

hi,

wanted to ask if gearbox plans to enable the HW1C Multiplayer in the Future ? So there is no more gamespy, we could use it for fights via steam, right?

I guess it might be possible, but probably very hard.
HW1’s code apparently had a reputation for being messy, so modifying it to support Steam(a multiplayer service which did not exist at the time of HW1) would probably be very hard.
Harder than just removing(at least for now) HW1 multiplayer.

Full disclosure though: I’m not a programmer and don’t claim to know what is part of Gearbox’s plans
(this said, the part about HW1’s code being messy came from hearing people who worked on HW:Cataclysm and who thus had to work with HW1’s source code to develop the game. By their own words if they had to be the ones to Remaster HW:Cata they probably wouldn’t use HW1/HW:Cata’s source code to do the job even if they are the creators of the later game).

Right, the developer claimed that, but looking at the code I can’t confirm this. https://github.com/timdetering/Homeworld

[/quote]Yeah. Looks perfectly readable at the relevant areas.

I doubt GBX feels it’s worth the effort as mostly just hardcore players would want to play HW1c multiplayer. Most new gamers wouldn’t understand the big deal. I can’t really blame them and I hope instead they can just vastly improve HWRM MP, which is currently lacking a lot of interesting and necessary mechanics that HW1 had since HW2 was considered a downgrade to many.

Would be cool if they’d release their updated source, and perhaps someone would take it on, though.

I would give my left testicle for this…
