And that’s probably why they tend to frame discussions like this one as ‘this is what we’re trying, we’ll see how it works and release it if it works well.’
I believe I’ve said it before, but if I put my mind in a maximally cynical mode and assume that gearbox has zero passion or loyalty to Homeworld, or sense of obligation to the people who have bought the game, then the amount of time and money(skilled man-hours cost money of course) being still put into the game makes the most sense to me if they plan on doing more with the franchise and are seeing what works, and what the community is receptive to, in preparation for another game. Leaving the game in stasis doesn’t make much sense then, nor does it make sense if they want to put out DLC. Establishing a precedent that the game will be supported and will be tuned after launch seems advantageous for RTS development.
Though I do want to make it clear I don’t think Gearbox is that coldly mercenary about HWRM. I assume that logic plays a part, as I do in any successful company, but only a part. I imagine that a large part of the motivation for this change is just a belief that it can make the game better, and making the game better is a thing to strive for. The tradeoff when it comes to HW2 squadron mechanics is something they’ve acknowledged, but from my point of view the tidiness that squadrons can bring is worth it, and HW1 MP vets seem to thing there was plenty of micro possible then without selfhealing squadrons, so the sky isn’t really falling, is it?
HW2 MP has existed for over a decade in stasis. Now people come along and start trying to address issues people had with the game from day one, and they’re the bad guys for even trying?
… We just got a freakin LOBBY !! A feature much desired by the community and BAM we got one, despite the fact that they said they wouldn’t do it. And please remember, this is NOT a triple A game that sold millions of copies, to expect huge teams working on this title is ridiculous to begin with.
I usually am on the critical side of such debates and would probably agree with you, but call me naive, I really have a good feeling about this game, or it might just be the fact that I loved playing this game and am not very objective when it comes to it
