That’s not the point of my statement.
Basically, you can sell expensive poop in a can to peoples, as long as it’s well marketed. “If they want it, they’ll buy it. Whatever it is. Whatever they say.”
So, saying that aggressive marketing doesn’t pay off, is kinda… poop.
Ya it does pay off when you’re EA and have ungodly amounts of money to spend on it, but for a company like Gearbox, which is not quite as large, a marketing campaign of that size would take up a huge amount of money of their money.
A flippant post prompted by this rather bizarre discussion over cartoon “erotica”
You may be aware that BB’s non-competitor, Overwatch, has come under fire for the taunt/victory pose of one of its characters. Apparently, the character is flaunting their bottom inappropriately.
I cannot imagine that our own game would have a character displaying their derriere in such a manner.

Loads of characters being gratuitously sexy! SPANK DAT ASS MONTANA!!!
Except peoples were talking about Blizzard’s Marketing for Overwatch. And they got the money, they won’t have a problem with it.
I thought I remembered someone saying that Battleborn should be doing all this stuff to keep up with Overwatch, which is doing it.
Look, Battleborn will survive on one fact: It requires skill to play. Overwatch, just like Team Fortress 2, has no teamwork required. Everyone goes and does their job on their own and in the chaos, objectives are completed or failed. Overwatch will not become a competitive eSport, no matter how much money Blizzard throws at it.
Battleborn has a strong foundation to be able to fill that niche. It’s the teamwork-required gameplay we expect out of MOBAs with the high octane action we desire out of an FPS. I think what will make or break this competitively is if they allow controller vs keyboard/mouse and allow controllers to go in with Aim Assist on. Assuming they leave ranked without Aim Assist and put in a character draft mode, I think things are going in the right direction for Battleborn in the eSport front and Overwatch be damned!
Over the weekend I saw a stream of Overwatch being played on PC as an eSport already. Cloud9 (the peeps who recently won the HotS tournament at BlizzCon) was playing Reunited (no idea who they are), and it was already being commentated from spectator mode and such.
Battleborn is only in early access, so there aren’t as many people into it. Hoping we can see people in the beta organizing stuff like that OW stream for BB, would be pretty cool. Do we know if BB has spectator mode yet?
I do not know what information you’re spitting here , but overwatch does need team coorinations. I recently watched a lot of overarching vids and the uncoordinated team always last. No one can carry the match, not even the best players. Take in mind like defense and capture in overwatch, they all need team work. I could see kinda your point if you’re talking about attack but that still needs and should require team work. I like that you like BB me too but we shouldn’t be like overwatch fans, they all spit lies and ■■■■ over BB. We batlleborn fans should use our head and not do the same bs the overwatch fanboys do. And also both games are really fun , even though BB is a bit better to me doesn’t it’s to everyone. Both are great games and just because overwatch is a rival it shouldn’t be treated like ■■■■. So I hope now you know a bit more about overwatch and maybe stop hating on it. Heck even BB YouTube’s don’t talk bad things about overwatch because it’s a fine game . Have a nice day
Edit by PH. Offensive terms removed
And I also think BB has auto aim too. BTW play junkrat or some other 3 star difficulty hero on overwatch and then tell me if the game doesn’t any skill. If you find it easy and get play of the game you’re right about overwatch, bit I doubt that will happen
If you look at the context of arcies post, I think they meant Battleborn instead of overwatch for the second paragraph about teamwork

Maybe but I don’t think so because in his first paragraph he was bashing overwatch, so idk. But the fact that overwatch doesn’t need skill is not true.
Yes arcie is bashing overwatch for not needing teamwork or skill and follows it up with overwatch could fill that niche because it’s MOBA like teamwork. Pretty positive it works better if you switch it to be:
Battleborn has a strong foundation to be able to fill that niche. It’s the teamwork-required gameplay we expect out of MOBAs with the high octane action we desire out of an FPS
Just makes more sense.
And to add to the topic, kill time alone defines the capability of how much teamwork matters. In overwatch, teamwork isn’t helping each as you don’t have the time to. Battleborn takes time to kill a hero, time where another hero may intervene or support one or another
Yes, I meant Battleborn has a strong foundation to fill that niche. Why are they both names made from two words!?
I don’t think Overwatch will be a bad game and I didn’t mean that there is no room for teamwork in the game. What I meant was, it’s geared towards being the next Team Fortress 2, where you have short alliances with players on your team, but generally each character has it’s own job on the map to fulfill. The Engineer in TF2 knows that on certain maps he should put his turret in spot A if it’s being attacked and move to B if it’s being attacked. Snipers know where the sniping spots are, Medics look for the heavy to heal, etc. It’s less about having flexibility as a team and more about doing your job. The flow of combat is very much “Fight over point A, move to B, fight over B, rinse repeat”.
In MOBAs and in Battleborn, the combat is more fluid. The push is fluctuating and teammates must regularly bail each other out of bad situations. The teamwork is much closer and the team composition takes more consideration as it can’t be changed on a whim in the middle of a match. Everything, from team composition to build must be determined throughout the flow of the battle to gain advantage as a unit instead of an individual.
I hope this clarifies my points earlier. I feel that the reasons listed above are why Team Fortress 2 never took over the eSport scene. It’s too chaotic in nature having character switch out on the fly, no requirement for close teamwork, and a general lack of cohesion in the action. Also, to point out, I am sure I will love Overwatch for the same reason I loved Team Fortress 2. Sometimes you need that chaotic jump in and not care gameplay. Overwatch will fill this niche, but I am excited for Battleborn because it’s genuinely a new mixture of fun ideas.
Ok now I’m understanding what you meant to say. Thanks for the clarification and I’ll see you in the beta
TF2 never hit the serious, big e-sports scene because of how much you need to change to the base game in order for competative play to work. It was barely recognizable when the changes were implemented.
And this is a good thing. TF2 is the only PvP game I’ve ever played because, if you can find the right bunch of people on the right server, it’s fun. I know I’m not a great, instinctive shooter. “Serious” PvP FPSs hold no appeal.
I’ll be buying BB for the campaign but I have a sneaky feeling that the PvP modes might have the same accessibility for Average Joe gamer (i.e. me) that TF2 had in the early days (before hats & silly weapons). It might be that BB is the second PvP game I play
They are too different for that to be actually true. It’s sad that people actually think it though. No offense to you but they just aren’t that similar. I thought the same thing until I started reading more about overwatch. From what I can tell, Battleborn appears to be WAY deeper and have WAY more ways to play and WAY more features. Overwatch looks fun from a jump in and play standpoint but it doesn’t have all the features I look for.
And it’s sad that people think these two are that close because I think some Overwatch players might miss out on the awesomeness that is Battleborn without ever really looking into it.
Well face value, they are in direct competition from the consumers view. Two games with a large cast of unique characters. You have to look into them to realize they’re different.
I have just come into these forums and literally the first thing I wondered was: “why does this particular thread even exist?”.
I mean:
(1) How can such a standard practice in gaming be considered “risky”? Preorders are not a new thing in the gaming industry. Gearbox is not pulling stunts, they just follow the rules that global marketing imposes. And we, as consumers choose whether we want to pre-order or not. If the final product ends up being disappointing, we can only blame ourselves. If you personally feel that because of a single bad release in a series of exceptional products, you shouldn’t trust Gearbox with pre-ordering Battleborn, that’s a totally different issue that has nothing to do with the game’s future.
(2) “Certain online works”? I mean, I am still in my early posts and wouldn’t want to be harsh with my soon-to-be-forumites but is that a serious concern or is the OP simply trolling us? I expected Battleborn’s community to be mostly Borderlands’ fans and Borderlands games were rated M, so… you know… just do the math.
(3) The ONLY concern that warrants a thread in the OP’s post. Overwatch VS Battleborn… Before I start talking about the particular matter, I will post this awesome video from The Warp Zone, which is going to perfectly demonstrate my point: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hh5K8jVmmDk. Have you watched the video? Cause that is essential to understand my point. Destiny was a DAMN rip-off of Borderlands. Borderlands was the first game that asked: “What would Diablo be like with GUUUUNZ?”. And that’s exactly what Gearbox did, they made a Shoot ‘n’ Loot game that defined a genre. And then along comes Bungie, totally copies the formula, wraps it around a “realistic” cover and serves a mediocre game to the public making more money than the Borderlands franchise might ever see. At the same time, Borderlands The Pre-Sequel comes out, being (at least) as good as Destiny, yet getting no publicity at all on all the “unbiased” gaming sites we know and love and ends up making much much less money than Destiny. My point is that right now, Overwatch has the upper hand because of sheer marketing power and we got to live with that. It’s the reality. But that does not mean that it is going to be the better game. In my opinion, Battleborn is going to be a really really good game and good games don’t die that easily.
(4) I do not believe a gamer should jump into conclusions about gaming genres based on the success or failure of a B title created 6 years ago being the very first title of a small unknown video game company. In fact, as far as I am aware, the first game company to ever utilise the term “Hero Shooter” was Gearbox during the initial presentation of Battleborn 2 years ago. How can anyone claim that “the X genre is a risky genre” when there are actually NO games that fit in that description yet?
TL;DR, lol version: There is no reason to fear for this game’s future.
