I feel bad for all the people 2K Australia

Not going to lie, I would argue about that.

Edit oh my god this is amazing:

Okay, so the personal comments haven’t stopped, derailment seems to have occurred, so let’s either continue the discussion on topic, or leave this thread alone.

That’s not how you do that. On topic now, or don’t post. Further off-topic posts will result in formal action.

It sucks to hear about a company in general going belly up as that’s families losing jobs, revenue for communities lost. It’s no laughing matter to me and truly wish the best for those people as I’m sure some were riding on a future with this company.

Nonetheless, Australia is a different country with a different breed of market and rules. Taking something designed for America and trying to implement it elsewhere is risky. The Pre Sequel is not really my cup of tea, but it was definitely put in great hands as they did make a unique theme to the franchise and could most definitely spawn many fresh ideas in the future for our beloved story.

Personally I wish they would have handed them Borderlands 2 and said continue our legacy while we fart around in different markets, but it is what it is.

Nothing stays super hyped forever and people move on, but they always come back. Gearbox has left its mark in the gaming community and this won’t hurt them in anyway

Did 2k Australia work for gearbox or was it a seperate entity?
Im not entirely clear on who does what with gaming companies/publishers etc.

2kAus was a division of 2k, the publisher. Gearbox owns the ip, but 2kAus made the game, rather than it being in-house, since in house they were working on battleborn.

To add to what @Poisonedbite said, folks had been agitating for more BL content, GBX was busy, and 2KAus wasn’t (they’d just come off something else). AIUI it was 2K that suggested having 2KAus take on some additional Borderlands content; this could not be within the existing BL2 game, however, since it was already pushing the memory limits of the 360 & PS3 hardware. So 2KAus got some version of the BL2 code, added the low gravity, lasers, Oz kits and slam mechanics, etc. There’s a making-of video somewhere showing Anthony Burch on conference calls with the 2KAus crew discussing the story and mechanics.

If I remember correctly, BL2 flat out cannot have more added to it, it was completely maxed out.

So Gearbox created Borderlands and do all the programming etc , and 2K do all the disc making/ distribution etc?
Were/ are 2K Australia a game-making part of 2K?

2KAus was a game development student which was wholly owned by 2K publishing (which is in turn owned by Take Two Interactive iirc).

Gearbox is an independent game development studio (and now publisher) which signed a deal with 2K in order to produce and distribute both the original Borderlands game and Borderlands 2.

Presumably, that deal included an agreement that 2K would publish other titles developed by GBX, or that they would at least have ā€œright of first refusalā€ on such titles. Either way, Battleborn ended up published by 2K as well.

Cool. Thanks for the info.
I always wondered who did what

I was about to mention that too.

What do you mean ā€œmoved onā€ ?
Move on to what ? No longer playing video games at all ? No longer liking this thing ?

Nobody ā€œmoves onā€ from things they like… those things just come back when they come back…

I’ve waited over 10 years for a sequel to Fallout 2 …
…I’m still waiting for a new Chrono trigger game.

Of course I ā€œmoved onā€ … I wasn’t going to stop playing games until a new one of that specific series came out again, but does that actually mean anything ?

If they announce a sequel to a game I enjoyed 10-15 years ago and I’ll be there to buy it.

Could not agree more. Half the problem that TPS ā€œfailedā€ was because for once a video game wasn’t completely revolving around American culture, as many complaints were based around the voice actors or ā€œbadā€ humour. 2K Aus made a phenomenal game, it just didn’t appeal to the highly vocal NA consumers because they didn’t get the inside jokes for once. They didn’t deserve to be shut down for that.

As for battleborn… what more could be said that already hasn’t? It was an embarrassment to the entire video game industry lol. I’ll not be holding my breath over bl3 if/when it comes out after that shitshow

Really ?

More than Gamergate ?
More than That voleyball game with the boobs physics ?
More than Daikatana ?
More than The crash of 1983 ?
More than the hot coffee mod ?
More than The Mario Bros movie ?
More than the Apple Pippin ?
More than Custer’s revenge ?
More than Big Rigs ?
More than the Xbox’s red ring of death recalls ?
More than… pretty much everything that EA ever did ?
… Anyone remember that Zelda game made by Phillips ?
edit: More than No man’s sky ?

… The video game industry doesn’t need ludicrous hyperboles like this to get embarassed: it has its past.

And a game like Battleborn that had good reviews but fell short in sales because of external factors and timing is HARDLY an embarrassment, any way you spin it.
Great games flop financially and commercially all the time.

Tbh I find it weird to believe that Battleborn was an embarrassment when No Man’s Sky came out the same year. Now THAT was a proper trainwreck.

Adding No man’s sky to my list above
Thanks :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m sorry, real fast…

On topic, there are a VAST amoun of industry ā– ā– ā– ā–  ups, just like every industry, where the loss is eaten and they keep going. Hell, look at the movie industry,

If we’re going to add trainwrecks to the list, we’re going to be here all night!

Back on topic, I’m actually wondering how many active game developer studios working for major publishers are left in Australia now? I’m pretty sure it wasn’t just 2KAus that disappeared when the tax credits got turned off.

Seriously, I think a lot of folks on here need to start following Aussie indie devs (and game devs as a whole) on social media.

It is a miracle for a AAA single player game with a story campaign to come out at all these days. For every game that even makes it onto someone’s list (good or bad), there are dozens, possibly hundreds more that might not even make it out of the concept stages let alone get released and/or be commercially successful.

Regardless of what your personal views are on a given game, remember that every game has a fanbase and passionate developers who worked on it. That includes games like No Man’s Sky and Battleborn. If you aren’t a fan, that’s fine, but that isn’t an excuse to talk trash about a game.

The Australian Gamedev scene is 100% indie. When the the AAA companies left, they left behind a lot of talent that decided to band together and keep making games. There’s not a heck of a lot of funding from the government outside of Melbourne, but that’s gradually changing as more hit indie games come out.
