In-Depth Thorn PvP Guide: Green is the Deadliest Color (Updated 5/30)

Still prefer the extra 10% cuz people are dumb and blight is OP… plus 35% ultimate danage? Mmmmmmm

Meh, I feel like most of the time, 35% on ult is wasted and overkill. I’m going to run numbers later on bleeding volley and 25% blight vs. regular volley and 35% blight, and then cursed volleys and blights.

I made a chart for how much damage Weath of the Wild does at lvl 5 and 10 on the Wikia. Its pretty huge…

I kinda prefer overkill with Thorn because tanks dont die sometimes… had a Kelvin tank every skill while 35% cursed and crit volley… even a full duration max upgrade blight x.x I was like “wtf!!!”

You say Thorn’s legendary piece is a must use but you don’t actually mention crit hit dmg as one of the gear stats you should be building…seems kind of contradictory. I’m a little confused on how the Thorn specific passive on it works also… The curse has levels of charge? So not only do you have to full draw you also have to wait even longer at full draw? Seems like a lot of wasted time and kind of an underwhelming legendary tbh. I heard she is better off being played as a mage-like skill based hero than a sniper, so using CDR, Skill power, and maybe Health Regen Primary gear stats.

Ive built on crit damage for the heck of it and honestly I dont think it is worth it.

It may be a deduction of useful stats but you take her Lore Legendary for the effect more than the crit damage. Its useful for Volley crits at least.

Curse is a solid charge, there are different levels of arrow charge however. Even after the animation stops you arent at full draw. You will hear a shallow swooshing sound. The Lore Legendary makes it so you can consistently get full draw and everyone will always be cursed when you do.

Health regen is nice but I stopped taking it myself… I stack full damage boosting gear and make use of returns as needed. Just seems underwhelming if you have to wait around.

Yep, I honestly don’t care for the crit damage on it, but the effect is the juicy part of the item. It really reduces the time needed to curse an enemy.

Taking health regen isn’t about waiting around to get health back. It’s about just running to get shards or other non-player combat objectives. It’s so you can still be productive instead if backing and not waste time. For example, if you’re playing incursion and are your teams main source of wave clear, you can throw a blight in lane, maybe a volley and then step back to get shards and what not and still be around if your team needs you, while also quickly regenerating your health.

The legendary that heals you while sprinting used to be my favorite piece of gear on Thorn, but now I just go full damage and skill damage build with lore legendary… the faster I can blow people up the safer it is for me to use a return without losing a Sentry. Or if you have a healer then just hope they don’t leave you out to die by never getting healed despite following them for 5 minutes (it’s happened to me before… they were healing everyone else :3)

Here’s a tip for @Graum and everyone else… hook up your mic and communicate with your team. It makes a HUGE difference. Even if they don’t speak odds are they can hear you…

Uh where is this coming from? How does this havre anything to do with the discussion?

Hey Twixled, I’m glad to stumble across your in depth guide for Thorn as it defintely made me a better PVP player. Thorn by far is my favourite badass and I’ve played her alot even in beta. As you know, with a PVE mindset, one does not normally take Fell Wind or Vaulting Hunter, or even at one point I thought Swampfoot was lousy but after reading your amazing guide with detailed explanation, tried it a few times in PVP, voila! I have been consistently having the most kills, shards and least death in my team!

Gear wise, I have Skill damage, Attack speed with Crit and Attack damage with max hp. I’m not sure if that’s the best gear for the but yeah I’m liking the damage output! Any recommendation is also appreciated.

Again thanks to you Twixled and the community!
Have a #badass day :v:t2:

Thanks! It’s nice to see I’m actually helping someone with this mass of words I’ve written down, haha.

I think I put this in the guide recently, and if I didn’t, I’ll do it momentarily. Attack/reload speed gear do not actually affect Thorn. Her attack speed is always between 1 and 1.86 seconds depending on how long you charge your arrows.

Even with scaling, Hexsanguination beats out Hextension.

Do you happen to have the numbers on that?

I’m gonna be updating this again in the next few days with those numbers and skill damage numbers. The scaling for abilities is roughly +4% per level.

I meant it that if you are following around a healer for 5 minutes and being ignored, it would make much more sense to be able to say, “Miko, can i get a heal, i’m behind you to the right.” You’ll have a much better chance of getting those heals if you have a mic and can communicate. That’s where it came from…

I got a pretty good shield penetration gear. Need your thoughts on this.

As you can see, most of the characters have a shield, and 4 out of 5 in a team would play a character with shield, so I was wondering if gearing up Thorn with shield penetration, good or nah?

I typically don’t, though I think I mentioned in the Galilea section of the Matchup Overview that having Shield pen can be pretty useful.

There’s definitely no problem with shield pen, and you can run whatever you feel like. I haven’t experimented with it too much because I usually play with a group of 5 and my gear tends to contain other attributes for composition purposes.

Hey Twix, firstly great guide man. I have read you a lot on these forums and I gotta say, its always an interesting, good and helpful read! so thanks for that haha.

I play thorn slightly differently in all honesty. here is my take on a thorn build.

In my opinion and experience of this game so far as using thorn as my main and pretty much 95% of the games I have played. Thorn is all about Skill Damage, AoE, And crit damage (altho crit damage will be less common damage compared to skill & AoE).

With that in mind, I Tend to base my build strongly around Skill Damage and Natures curse positive Helix. Helix looks like this quickly:
1.Swampfoot
2.Cursed earth - curse when in blight
3.Draw Strength
4.Kresheks judgement - volley curse on hit
5.Hextension - extra 10% skill damage when cursed & little extra time
6 Brutal Blight - extra %15 damage for blight
7.Phasing arrows
8.Enduring Blight - extra blight time
9.Kresheks rage - extra 15% volley skill damage
10.Earth render - blight upon ult detonation.

Gear-wise, I currently run:

Thorn legendary - Mainly for the arrows instant curse at full draw (plus extra crit damage and health regen is always good for thorn)
Voxis Core legendary (temp disabled) - this thing was BEAST. it had +130 sheild. as well as having extra skill damage %4 which might not seem like much but also had the extra %15 stack to enemies near the skill so it would stack and literally melt players or enemies in seconds (it was way too OP so that’s why they are currently nerfing the extra %15 stack damage to not stack and just be %15) but even after the nerf it will very good for all AoE and skill damage characters.
or if you have no voxis then any skill damage legendary or epic you can get that’s best for you, I would recommend skill damage + health, h regen, or att damage maybe. that depends on you really tho.
Third gear piece - I usually use a piece that has Skill damage of +6% and then +180ish health.

by putting a lot of effort into skill damage with gear and then helixing most of them towards skill damage, then it means that when u curse an enemy (always should be first thing done when entering a fight/duel in this build either by full draw arrow or cursed volley) it means you are dealing an extra 35% with the helix help and then extra 15% more damage for blight and volley as well with helix help, and finally another nearly 10% with gear additions (not sure how that adds in terms of total percentage tbh, but I know its a lot!). Believe me, you will hit hard with Blight like a train! volley hits pretty hard if well aimed, as well as cursing them for extra 35% damage for the following blights and volleys or ultimates. And when the Ultimate get levels 10, enemies that are cursed go down every time even at full health if all three skills are used correctly or well. the ultimate deals up to 750 as standard…if against a cursed enemy in this build it will hit around 900 with helix help, PLUS another 10% with gear so lets say around 1000ish, then when double blight is left under them (one from normal blight and one from ultimate) causing DOT with all the upgrades and skill damage inclusions you will be hitting them far in excess off 1000+ (more like 1500ish, sometimes more if done well). pair that with having cursed them with volley before as well (so even more damage from a well aimed volley) And that’s without any arrows u can hit during this whole ordeal as well as any other damage from teammates, minions, turrets etc.

this build has given me a LOT of success and fun. And it means if you get good at it then u will be regularly at the top of leaderboards for kills and damage dealt.

I focus mainly on DPS and am probably classed as a glass cannon (a lot of damage dealt but can be squishy if trapped or caught out!) but I find thorn is fast enough and has good enough health regen anyways to get away and counter this a little and after a while of getting used to thorns movement and style its easily avoidable to get caught or hurt too much. Plus I do add extra health and a little health regen buffs from my gear loud-outs as well.
