Is anyone pleased with the state of the game currently?

It is the root of the game… all other things like characters, worlds, dialogue are in support of the core reason borderlands exists, and that’s loot. How do you get loot? You grind. How many times have you run the Cartel mansion? How many playthroughs have you done with each character? Do you not care to find that perfect piece of gear? Or any gear at all?

There are many things to like and love about this game, I understand that. But we are all here because we grind for that gear, one way or another.

We all want to pull the lever but at some point the slot machine has to pay off. That is a really tricky thing to get right because chasing the shiny is the goal So you need to balance reward vs frustration.

I think BL2 did that better because you were chasing an optimal gun (parts) but the not optimal version was still good to have and the better version, by and large, was incrementally better. The Sham at 86% was still good even if we all wanted a 94%. Here, getting a gun is meaningless because I am really chasing annointments and the gap between a with a sliding or airborn annointment compared to a SNTL Cryo one is massive so even though I have gotten a dozen Kaosans none of them are really good for me.

My overall feeling is that BL3, even with the anointments, is much more generous. I played BL2 for over 2000 hours and never felt satisfied with the drop rates… BL3 makes me feel warm inside with the generous drop rates. Yeah, you have to find good anointments, especially if you’re looking to tackle M10. But they aren’t 100% necessary. My Dastardly Seventh Sense has no anointment yet it’s my go to pistol. I do run Amara, so I’m counting on the 50% elemental bonus for 10 seconds ASE, but those are a piece of cake to get on shields and grenades.

Here’s my latest run on the Cartel. I’m heavily relying on the Holy Crit modifier, but that suits my play style perfectly:

Notice, too, that I’m not using a Yellowcake, an OPQ, or the Kaoson.

For me, it is not the grind for loot, but rather the power fantasy that follows that I enjoy about the game. You know, the gameplay that follows obtaining something decent. Personally I would love the ability to exchange weapon parts on legendaries, even if it is just the type of a sight. For some odd reason I tend to always get 3x or 5x magnification optic on any vladof weapon which is exactly what I don’t want, so maybe I have a personal vendetta there. But in general, if I could swap out parts even just for the cosmetic look of the weapon, it is something I would love as an addition.

I agree OP, this is easily the worst state that the game has been in. It’s a huge bummer because things were really trending in the right direction. Mayhem 4 took a better approach to the modifiers, the weapon balance was getting to a really good place and an absolutely high point for the series, Moze’s Iron Bear was finally in a great place and they said FL4K’s pets were next, the Cartel event is awesome and the next TD is coming soon, etc. All they really needed to do IMO was add a few Mayhem levels to smooth the curve a bit between Mayhem 3 and 4, create some way to farm for specific Anointments (still hoping for re-rolling), and balance/fix some of the characters a bit further and things would have been fantastic.

I was loving most of the game before Mayhem 2.0 and was having a great time playing DLC2; but now I haven’t touched the game since Mayhem 2.0 released.

Who would have guessed the most “mayhem” thing about Mayhem Mode would be how many things it can completely screw up.

Good!!! We’re hoping Gearbox is reading our comments, so that they get rid of Mayhem 2.0 which is an absolute botch up

Right now I’m at a state where I feel I am more powerful at M2.0 M10 than at M1.0 M4. I used to think I am godly at the old Mayhem and cant get any better.

So my question now is NOW WHAT? Same concern I had with level cap raises. At the end of the day I end up at the same state at least except I wasted time rebuilding and gearing up again.

My feeling is M2.0 is a waste of effort.

Right now, I’ve got mixed feelings.

I LOVE the Cartel event and wished that Calling for Backup was a Mayhem feature. Including the lower tier bosses that could show up. THAT has been super fun.

But M2.0…
I HATE modifiers that alter the player negatively. (better Crit, but garbage accuracy for example) I’m also not a fan of things getting so bullet spongy roughly after M6. It’s what I have been hating about certain anointed enemies since day one. They aren’t more difficult. They just bore and frustrate the player.

Modifiers should be individually optional with some kind of value attached to it. There are many of these modifiers I’d rather avoid altogether. (No FFYL, running from Death, Cryo novas that make it so you can’t slide)

(Also, why can’t we slide while frozen? Are we not slippery enough or something?)

Currently, I play M5/M6.

That’s about where it’s still fun for me. I wouldn’t mind playing higher levels without modifiers.

Also, what happened to the buffs only approach? Or was that just for OG M4?

Not for everyone. But if gear is your motivator then grinding is pretty much inevitable. Fortunately there are other ways to play the game, although I totally get that those won’t appeal to everyone (just as grinding doesn’t either)

Of course, but one way or another we’re all in search of better, or different, or just more gear. Grinding is a bad term, I guess. Playing… Playing the game is what we all do.

And I enjoy the state of the game right now. That’s my main take on it. Sure, there are little things that need to be addressed… But I’m sure GBX is taking the steps it needs to.

People may frown upon this but the only thing stopping me from playing other than new events and DLC is constant grind for dedicated drops. Give me a guaranteed drop rate for dedicated drops and I’ll be 100% happy. People have argued that a guaranteed drop would kill the game but it’s the opposite for me and many others who do not want to spend a ridiculous amount of time even getting the damn item let alone with a decent annointment.

I’ve been trying to get a monarch and because of the current event all Killavolt drops are smg’s…

The game is a mess right now. They said that they improved the drop rates with the latest hotfix but the drops are still terrible. I’m playing on M10 and barely getting any legendaries. It’s simply not worth the time.

It’s the fact there has been no evolution on the grind that bothers me(they’ve actually made it far, far worse since they’ve added even more layers of RNG to weapons and currently borked the drop rates on mayhem 10 etc). BL3 is still stuck in 2009 with how it goes about allowing the player to acquire gear. There are no guarantees through challenges really other than the bekah/schoville type weapons that no longer even scale to difficulty and are STILL obnoxiously impossible to try and get on console. There is no worthwhile currency to exchange for the possibility of new gear. No legendary scrapping/converting or modifying of any kind at all. Just 150% reliance upon RNGesus, and that’s great when you get super lucky, but absolutely insulting to your time and effort when you go unrewarded for insanely long periods of time. At this point I’ve spent more times looking at loading screens than actually playing the game I feel due to the start/quit nature of farming in this game.

Honestly want my money back. Least gearbox can do for a fan that they made an unpaid beta tester

The ion cannon was an almost guaranteed drop (1/20 kills you wouldn’t get one something like that) and people still played the game. With the influx of more anointments I agree with this

I’m good with my money tbh. I got tons of enjoyment at launch and tons about a month before this mayhem 2.0 came along and crapped in my fun cheerios. It’s just ridiculous why gearbox has constantly spit in my face while I’m just trying to enjoy their game  For me personally thus far they have a 50/50 chance of ruining my fun on their title just because they keep poking their heads in and changing things when for the most part I feel it’s unneeded or entirely overblown. Really kinda wish they’d just focus on adding DLC and leave the game alone. They’ve put the game in a constant state of flux that has added far more headaches than should have been if they’d just left well enough alone. Fix things that are broken and optimize the game don’t constantly shake up the entire game just because “reasons” …

Yep, just give me the gun so I can enjoy it. Zero enjoyment out of killing the same enemy over and over again in hopes of getting the item. Seriously, I give up if I can’t get one after 20mins. That’s 20mins wasted no matter how you look at it.

I love both DLCs. I love Villa Ultraviolet. All of them are extremely well done, imo.
I HATE what they did with loot, mob health, and modifiers in M2.0, and I hope it can be fixed soon. I’m staying at M4 right now because I can still have fun with most action skills at that level, and I can still kill mobs with old favorites instead of resigning myself to using Yellowcake or O.P.Q because it’s just orders of magnitude faster to do so.

THIS is a great post, and 100% accurate. I don’t think this problem is totally related to Mayhem 2.0, but Mayhem 2.0 definitely made this pre-existing problem even worse.

I enjoy the modifiers, and know that when I get my build and gear up to date there’s not a modifier I can’t tackle…BUT getting that gear is the issue. Or gear I though would would has not scaled well.
