Because it’s okay to surrender!

50/50 for like 10 minutes doing everything we can to hold off the team at the choke point and going to lose off points. Team calls for surrender, 2 minutes left I stealth run to the enemy sentry, space lasers, napalm, stealth, napalm and drop it to 48 health for a win with 2 seconds left.

50/50 is anyone’s game unless the score totals were something like 12 and 78.

As long as the game is close, then surrender isn’t needed. If the game is a stomp though, then it would be good to just accept the loss and surrender if the game looks like it’ll be dragged out.

I sat for 10 minutes in Isics siege mode at the base ledge just dragging out a clear loss. Ended up with like 95 minion kills and 4/10 for the match, I don’t get the thought process of just giving them a win like that. Even if I lose I’m gonna make you work for that win.

There are no circumstances in which I will vote to surrender. Zero. I don’t care if we are getting trounced. If we are going to lose, I’ll pay attention a little bit to the other team and try and learn why. Practice is practice. I’m slowing getting better at PvP when I swore up and down I wouldn’t play it. Heck, half the time my team lost due to surrender I didn’t even see the vote.

And I’ll be the judge if my time is being wasted. Retreat? Sure. Surrender? Never.

Yesterday my opponenets were a premade team with 3 100’s, an 86 and a 50+ or so and we were all individual’s but had 2 100’s ourselves (me and another) an 80 and two low levels (around their 20’s). We were down a whole sentry and were in danger of losing our second one. We got two power plays and turned the game around and won a victory 24-0.

The point of this story is sometimes it’s not ok to just surrender no matter if the odds are bad and you are down in score.

Yes, it is okay to surrender when you and/or the people around you are not having fun in a game that’s turning out to be a stomp. Winning isn’t everything. Congrats on the win, but some people simply don’t enjoy being forced to go through excess effort to win a match. It is cool when it happens, but if someone or multiple someones wants to surrender a game that’s heavily in the enemy team’s favor, then its okay to surrender for their sake.

Not only for their own sake, but for your own. They don’t wanna be in a game they fully believed is lost and you don’t wanna be in a game with someone or people who have given up. It can create a less than enjoyable experience to both parties involved. Hence me creating this topic and explaining its okay to surrender in situations such as these.

Still, good job in the match.

Let’s stick to discussing the game and not other users.

If you want to surrender every time you start to lose - surrender because you did not get the character you wanted - or surrender with 3 minutes left and you are getting your behind handed to you, why do you play games. Well…that last one might be OK. But…

Losing is going to happen.
Someone picking your character first is going to happen.
LOSING…IS…GOING…TO…HAPPEN.

You want a perfect game, play by yourself. You’ll win every time.

You know when it becomes un-fun. When other players throw a tantrum because they don’t get their way.

So, put your big boy (or girl) pants on and PLAY THE GAME!

is not the same as

Well, there are a couple of things with Battleborn in particular:

-the surrender option is way too early in the match when compared to the potential match duration

-there aren’t penalties for leaving/surrendering, so people are EXTREMELY trigger-happy when it comes to surrendering. I mean, I have never ever played a game where people like to surrender this much. Ever. Of any genre.

-surrender is weirdly calculated, as in, you need to actively vote against it, not just leave it to fail due to not having enough votes. This leads to basically half of the team deciding for the whole team. Why, you ask, when you can “fight the surrender with voting” - because many times, people don’t notice there’s a surrender voting in progress. So they shoot at someone and they see “defeat” suddenly.

-surrender option is crazy spammable. Even with the hotfix - it’s sitll crazy spammable.

-not all moba’s (we can also include other genres) have the surrender option. HotS doesn’t, for example. And it’s about the same when it comes to match length.

-being “stomped” in battleborn is one of the nicest and most pleasant stomps in moba-ish genre existence. I had matches where we were absolutely destroyed with like 500-32 or something, but I still had to experience the true battleborn gameplay. There was no reason to surrender. In virtually any other moba(ish) game, an equivalent matchup/score would simply pin you and the match would be ~20 minutes of pure suffering and/or scrolling the map for ages and staring blankly at the screen because you are dead 90% of the time. In battleborn, death timers are very low, TTK is VERY high (very, very high), so you can live longer even if you made huge mistakes and generally - you do “gameplay” even when the other team is much better.
Of course, this isn’t a binary notion, but in general, even in the case of a clear stomp, there’s still gameplay to be had in battleborn. Not so much in other similar games (including overwatch, hots, lol or dota. All of them are objectively twenty times more pointless and crushing if you are on a wrong end of the MM. You can’t do anything. There’s no “gameplay”. In BB, I had embarassingly bad losses but we were, well, PLAYING). This is very important when it comes to the surrendering notion.

-A LOT of people see the surrender option not as “this is completely pointless, MM failed badly, I see no gameplay, they are 100x better and it shows, I stare at my death cam 99% of the time, we are pinned at spawn - let’s try to initiate the surrender vote” - but rather as “it seems we are losing, I have an idea - why not surrender lol?”.
I’ve seen the surrender vote cast at 100-99 in incursion - scratch that, I’ve seen it at 100-100 - scratch that too, I’ve seen it at 100-92 FOR THE SURRENDERING TEAM.

-there are no mechanics to prevent trolling, semi-afking, leaving etc. This leads to certain people attributing ABSOLUTELY NO WEIGHT TO MATCHES (notice how I wrote “absolutely no weight” - I didn’t write “less weight than I think they should” ). Which leads to people going “ah, I died, surrender” or “ah, i wanted galilea, surrender”. Or, on the other hand - afk. Whic leads to others being like "ah, we have an afk, surrender"
Justified or not, this isn’t exactly healthy and it basically makes surrender an option that’s being pressed more than character abilities on average in one BB match.

-a lot of people surrender out of spite towards the opposing team, in order to “deny them victory”. A notion with no mechanical purpose, but a psychological one. For example, your second sentry is at 10-9-8… and is being constantly pushed, you are dead and it will all be over in ten seconds - but wait! what’s that? A surrender vote. Yes. A surrender vote hurriedly proposed like LITERALLY ten seconds before the inevitable end. I mean literally, I don’t mean it in some millenial-hipster way:) It happend more than once, to put it lightly. It’s very petty and brings notihng.

All this combined is very powerful in creating a certain reputation for “battleborn surrender button”.

Well, that’s you. If you wanna surrender, by all means, go for it. Just don’t expect the rest of us to go along with your plan.

As long as they don’t attack you on a personal level, it doesn’t really matter, yeah?

I’ve got my own issues with surrender… Like many the above reasoning already discussed… People mainly just robbing others of full victories, or just giving up for example…

I always vote against, because winning or losing, I just want to play…

Why?

Because I’ve been sitting in a queue for the last 30 minutes, players constantly dropping in and out, it just not seeming like it’s going anywhere, just because I wanted ‘one quick game’…

Surrendering isn’t seen as such a big deal to someone on a good server, where their queue wait is only a few minutes, and they can jump from game to game no problem…

But consider, in the time it’s taken you to play 10 games… I’ve probably struggled to get just 1…

It sucks, I’m sorry you are an inconvenience to me, just as I am to you…

But if Battleborn functioned as smoothly for everyone, as it seemingly does for certain individuals… I wouldn’t have to hold on for dear life the way I do… Sigh.

Lost our first Sentry in the first 5 minutes of the game, and after we lost our Sentry, someone wanted to surrender.

WE WON THE GAME.

And it was an exiting game at that.

And my posts still stand. Congrats on your win.

Things I will never do:

  • Eat Natto again.
  • Win against my husband in an arm wrestling match.
  • Enjoy being really high up.
  • Tell someone how excited I am about going into small spaces.
  • Vote to Surrender.

I’ve had people call for a surrender while we were WINNING the match. Not by a small margin either, by a few hundred points on a capture map while all of us were maintaining a decent level lead over the other team. I’ve also had people call for surrender when it’s painfully obvious we won’t win.

But either way, I’d rather play to completion. I hate it when my opposing team surrenders to us. It just isn’t fun to win or lose that way. So no matter the odds, don’t expect me to click yes. I mean, one of my best matches we started out down one person, and our Montana just stood in the base the entire game. The three of us still wound up winning 3v5 because we pushed hard enough and worked together against the other team, mostly just throwing them off their game because they scattered early, probably assuming 5v4 would be an easy win.

Besides, as others have pointed out. We all sat in the same queue waiting to actually PLAY. If someone doesn’t wish to do that, by all means, drop out of the match. The rest of us will just have to do our best to pick up the slack without you.

Yeah, surrendering just because your first sentries gone is sillly. I can see surrendering when your second gets dinged up a bit if it’s a one way fight the whole time.

I think it’s pathetic actually. I’d rather take it on the chin and carry on.

Multiple times in DOOM I’ve been on a losing team then managed to come back to a win (obviously this isn’t DOOM but I’m using it as it’s my best example).
