Let’s stick to discussing the game and not other users.

If you want to surrender every time you start to lose - surrender because you did not get the character you wanted - or surrender with 3 minutes left and you are getting your behind handed to you, why do you play games. Well…that last one might be OK. But…

Losing is going to happen.
Someone picking your character first is going to happen.
LOSING…IS…GOING…TO…HAPPEN.

You want a perfect game, play by yourself. You’ll win every time.

You know when it becomes un-fun. When other players throw a tantrum because they don’t get their way.

So, put your big boy (or girl) pants on and PLAY THE GAME!

is not the same as

Well, there are a couple of things with Battleborn in particular:

-the surrender option is way too early in the match when compared to the potential match duration

-there aren’t penalties for leaving/surrendering, so people are EXTREMELY trigger-happy when it comes to surrendering. I mean, I have never ever played a game where people like to surrender this much. Ever. Of any genre.

-surrender is weirdly calculated, as in, you need to actively vote against it, not just leave it to fail due to not having enough votes. This leads to basically half of the team deciding for the whole team. Why, you ask, when you can “fight the surrender with voting” - because many times, people don’t notice there’s a surrender voting in progress. So they shoot at someone and they see “defeat” suddenly.

-surrender option is crazy spammable. Even with the hotfix - it’s sitll crazy spammable.

-not all moba’s (we can also include other genres) have the surrender option. HotS doesn’t, for example. And it’s about the same when it comes to match length.

-being “stomped” in battleborn is one of the nicest and most pleasant stomps in moba-ish genre existence. I had matches where we were absolutely destroyed with like 500-32 or something, but I still had to experience the true battleborn gameplay. There was no reason to surrender. In virtually any other moba(ish) game, an equivalent matchup/score would simply pin you and the match would be ~20 minutes of pure suffering and/or scrolling the map for ages and staring blankly at the screen because you are dead 90% of the time. In battleborn, death timers are very low, TTK is VERY high (very, very high), so you can live longer even if you made huge mistakes and generally - you do “gameplay” even when the other team is much better.
Of course, this isn’t a binary notion, but in general, even in the case of a clear stomp, there’s still gameplay to be had in battleborn. Not so much in other similar games (including overwatch, hots, lol or dota. All of them are objectively twenty times more pointless and crushing if you are on a wrong end of the MM. You can’t do anything. There’s no “gameplay”. In BB, I had embarassingly bad losses but we were, well, PLAYING). This is very important when it comes to the surrendering notion.

-A LOT of people see the surrender option not as “this is completely pointless, MM failed badly, I see no gameplay, they are 100x better and it shows, I stare at my death cam 99% of the time, we are pinned at spawn - let’s try to initiate the surrender vote” - but rather as “it seems we are losing, I have an idea - why not surrender lol?”.
I’ve seen the surrender vote cast at 100-99 in incursion - scratch that, I’ve seen it at 100-100 - scratch that too, I’ve seen it at 100-92 FOR THE SURRENDERING TEAM.

-there are no mechanics to prevent trolling, semi-afking, leaving etc. This leads to certain people attributing ABSOLUTELY NO WEIGHT TO MATCHES (notice how I wrote “absolutely no weight” - I didn’t write “less weight than I think they should” ). Which leads to people going “ah, I died, surrender” or “ah, i wanted galilea, surrender”. Or, on the other hand - afk. Whic leads to others being like "ah, we have an afk, surrender"
Justified or not, this isn’t exactly healthy and it basically makes surrender an option that’s being pressed more than character abilities on average in one BB match.

-a lot of people surrender out of spite towards the opposing team, in order to “deny them victory”. A notion with no mechanical purpose, but a psychological one. For example, your second sentry is at 10-9-8… and is being constantly pushed, you are dead and it will all be over in ten seconds - but wait! what’s that? A surrender vote. Yes. A surrender vote hurriedly proposed like LITERALLY ten seconds before the inevitable end. I mean literally, I don’t mean it in some millenial-hipster way:) It happend more than once, to put it lightly. It’s very petty and brings notihng.

All this combined is very powerful in creating a certain reputation for “battleborn surrender button”.

Well, that’s you. If you wanna surrender, by all means, go for it. Just don’t expect the rest of us to go along with your plan.

As long as they don’t attack you on a personal level, it doesn’t really matter, yeah?

I’ve got my own issues with surrender… Like many the above reasoning already discussed… People mainly just robbing others of full victories, or just giving up for example…

I always vote against, because winning or losing, I just want to play…

Why?

Because I’ve been sitting in a queue for the last 30 minutes, players constantly dropping in and out, it just not seeming like it’s going anywhere, just because I wanted ‘one quick game’…

Surrendering isn’t seen as such a big deal to someone on a good server, where their queue wait is only a few minutes, and they can jump from game to game no problem…

But consider, in the time it’s taken you to play 10 games… I’ve probably struggled to get just 1…

It sucks, I’m sorry you are an inconvenience to me, just as I am to you…

But if Battleborn functioned as smoothly for everyone, as it seemingly does for certain individuals… I wouldn’t have to hold on for dear life the way I do… Sigh.

Lost our first Sentry in the first 5 minutes of the game, and after we lost our Sentry, someone wanted to surrender.

WE WON THE GAME.

And it was an exiting game at that.

And my posts still stand. Congrats on your win.

Things I will never do:

  • Eat Natto again.
  • Win against my husband in an arm wrestling match.
  • Enjoy being really high up.
  • Tell someone how excited I am about going into small spaces.
  • Vote to Surrender.

I’ve had people call for a surrender while we were WINNING the match. Not by a small margin either, by a few hundred points on a capture map while all of us were maintaining a decent level lead over the other team. I’ve also had people call for surrender when it’s painfully obvious we won’t win.

But either way, I’d rather play to completion. I hate it when my opposing team surrenders to us. It just isn’t fun to win or lose that way. So no matter the odds, don’t expect me to click yes. I mean, one of my best matches we started out down one person, and our Montana just stood in the base the entire game. The three of us still wound up winning 3v5 because we pushed hard enough and worked together against the other team, mostly just throwing them off their game because they scattered early, probably assuming 5v4 would be an easy win.

Besides, as others have pointed out. We all sat in the same queue waiting to actually PLAY. If someone doesn’t wish to do that, by all means, drop out of the match. The rest of us will just have to do our best to pick up the slack without you.

Yeah, surrendering just because your first sentries gone is sillly. I can see surrendering when your second gets dinged up a bit if it’s a one way fight the whole time.

I think it’s pathetic actually. I’d rather take it on the chin and carry on.

Multiple times in DOOM I’ve been on a losing team then managed to come back to a win (obviously this isn’t DOOM but I’m using it as it’s my best example).

I had someone send me a hateful message because I asked for surrender. A match in which, every time I was being attacked by three players, no one came to back me up. A match in which everyone was too concerned with killing players and not capturing thralls or shooting the sentry. I just couldn’t stand being on a team who complained about me, the support, not killing enough guys and dying too often (maybe bc no one came to help me when the enemy chased me all the way back to base).

-sigh-
I’m just venting here, but the point is sometimes you get stuck with a terrible team who only care about themselves and a surrender isn’t the worst thing in the world. I agree the surrender system should be tweaked a little more, but to suggest that any kind of surrender is taboo is just foolish.

Some are saying that it isn’t fun for the other team if they win by surrender. Is it also fun for the other team to just pummel your team into the ground while your team has no kills and about 10 deaths 15 min into the match? Is it fun for YOUR team? Apparently not if the majority vote for surrender.

Knowing when you’ve been beaten and to accept that is an important skill to have. Wouldn’t you rather move on to the next game where, even if you’re beaten, it was a close game than one where you have no chance? Not everyone will agree with me—but that’s okay. I accept that. Just don’t get angry at your comrades if the majority of your team votes for surrender. Chances are if you really don’t like surrenders of any kind, you might not have liked playing with them anyway. I mean, there were (and still are) a few threads concerning bad matchmaking, and many of the people complaining either surrendered or left their matches bc they weren’t having fun.

If you find someone who doesn’t stop fighting even when three of your team has disconnected, ask them if they would like to join your group or possibly be your friend. Don’t complain that you can’t find people who don’t surrender. I’m sure you can find like minded individuals here in the forums.

Take note that I’m not referring to the games where a team surrenders 6 min after the match started or where a group of people troll others by surrendering when they’re winning. I’m also not referring to anyone specific on this forum. Bottom line—just try to be mindful and understanding of what others may be experiencing. Your problems are not the only ones to exist in the world.

I just had a typical match in Battleborn. By typical I mean one player quit cause he didn’t get the map he wanted, another was afk and the 3rd guy would charge the enemy and die. Sadly this is what I get more often than not.

definitely ok to surrender. i do it all the time. even ok to back out and wait for matchmaking to not fail and put you solo queue against a 5 man. i would never let someone elses opinion of surrender sway my choice.

that being said, today i had probably the best game ive had across the test, beta, and full game. it was meltdown. i had my friend on mike, while i was playing phoebe. we were literally down something around 385 to a little over 100. but i was definitely leveling very quickly, not dying, and getting a kill here and there while they were running away with it. one thing i do incredibly well is choosing my battles. it is so much better to give them a few points than it is to give them a few points and a kill, so i did a lot of retreating. i just milled around smartly until i hit a power spike. my gear was ready, i was probably a level above their whole team, even though they were up almost 300 points. i decided it was time. i went absolutely nuts with three teammates that did not have thumbs. my friend played well also. they had a galilea, an alani, a ghault, etc. We had none of the above. just straight up, balanced characters. we were down by around 50 points with like 30 seconds left, and around 20 points while the 10 seconds counted down. i got like a triple kill and we got two waves in literally at the exact last second of the game and we won 485-481. i finished 22 and 1… best pvp experience ever.

the absolute best bright spot about this game is that skill and being smart wins, with the exception of pre made v solo, and broken characters. there is so much room for counter play when people dont play exploitative characters. you dont die simply because some sniper caught you distracted for half a second. you have to actually outplay people in this game, unless the obvious broken characters or gear are in play

I had a match like that! It was beautiful, on echelon, and super even, despite their Marquise. Marq carried them for awhile, ours couldn’t even compare. Every time I got close to him, ambra or Rath stopped me. I was melka. We each destroyed a sentry. And at the two minute mark, we managed to hurt their second one! It was awesome! Then, however, after they killed two of us, in the very last minute, they charged in and hurt our last one. Actually talked to their marq after the match to congratulate each other on an awesome match, even.
Granted, we could’ve surrendered. One person tried. Maybe even should’ve, we were outmatched and outplayed, most the game. But we were determined and had fun! And completely solo queue on both teams :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m not saying every match is like that. The match before, I wanted to surrender. Also Echelon, we got stomped. There was no chance. They won within seven minutes. And that happens. I voted, and got no rage. Nor did I afk or dc when it got denied. That’s just the way the game is.

Hell, I even had a match that started 4v5, and we were winning! It was tough, but we were slowly winning. Then our uhh… Lowest stat teammate quit. He was OM, and our best wave clear. Atticus and I (mel again) focused disruption and kills, and it was still a close match for a bit, but we did surrender, if memory serves. And we still enjoyed the match, and were happy that we did as well as we did.

Surrendering is fine. It’s not always the best choice, but if you gotta, you gotta. Like going poo. Surrendering is the video game equivalent of going poo, although many probably find it less enjoyable. So it’s the video game equivalent of using a public restroom :stuck_out_tongue:

There are definitely scenarios in which surrendering is okay, but most of the time the surrender option is just abused. I’ve had so many matches that end before either of the teams even meet the halfway mark on Meltdown, it’s ridiculous.

Personally the only times I’ll vote for surrender is if we’re 2+ men down (Though I once did play a game 1v5 because it took me 45 minutes to get that match… I’m getting my exp!!) and if my teammates are being absolute jerks. I am not going to co-operate with people who think it’s okay to tell you to kill yourself over a video game. I mean, Battleborn isn’t even a competitive game yet… You get nothing for winning, you lose nothing by losing. Calm down, maybe?

Yeah, did not ask you to. Because your second quote was the same as my end sentence. Pick and choose, but choose the right one.

That was the end sentence. Which still doesn’t change the quote I used previously.

I’ll play the game, but I’ll be damned if I’ll put my pants on while I’m doing it!! :persevere:
