Let's Talk about Matchmaking

I know that it was never about the randomness, but that’s what they turned it into, knowing that it wasn’t going to be popular.

At any rate, the queue times aren’t noticeably faster, and didn’t need to be on PS4 at least. They are noticeably SLOWER, however, in both Spotlight and Competitive. I’ve barely been able to get Spotlight to work when I’m not alone, and haven’t been able to play in Competitive at all because of the long wait times. People are complaining about full teams of high ranking players in the Casual queue, claiming that the only reason that they’re there is to beat up on randoms, but I can tell you that most of the time that probably isn’t the case. I know that I personally am not willing to wait over 20 minutes in the Competitive queue just so that people in the Casual queue don’t have to worry about playing against players that match their skill level.

Yeah, most every console player has mentioned how the issue of long queue times wasn’t a thing for them, so I can understand why the frustration is higher for you people. Makes you wonder why the change wasn’t applied exclusively to PC (assuming it’s feasible to do such thing, don’t see why not but hey, I’m not a dev).

It’s not even just that the long wait times weren’t an issue before, it’s that they now ARE an issue in most playlists. It didn’t just screw up the ability to choose a gametype, it actually created the issue that it was meant to alleviate, in addition to completely killing the rest of the experience. It’s insane.

It was very disheartening to see nothing in the Battleplan today. It now seems we are going to go into another weekend with no matchmaking and more reasons for people to just stop playing. You have those hard numbers of queue times and logouts, but I don’t think I’m being the typical forum drama queen there, I’ve seen the people leaving.

It appears nearly unanimous that people would be happier with the old system back, even the defenders to me seem halfhearted…probably because it is difficult to defend hour(s) of queue times or giving up matchmaking completely for no reason or benefit that can be figured out by us mortals. And with an admission it’s NOT working out taking stubbornness out of the mix… it seems like we could have had a rollback, a date for a rollback, or some alternate proposal by now.

Matchmaking is getting some changes tomorrow. The Battleplan will be updated to reflect that around the time the changes go live. I think around the same time there will be another post about the updates as well.

Someone linked that post in this thread already, guess it’s worth re-linking so others are aware.

Thanks Martok, my wife and I only like capture I’ve tried incursion over and over and it wouldn’t be so bad but if it gets voted twice that’s over an hour of playing what we don’t want… I love the game I just want to pick more desperately

Mode*

Please let us play the way we want. Please allow us to choose whatever map we want on whatever mode we want to play in. You took 1 step forward when you disabled ELO a few weeks ago but fell 2 steps back creating Competitive mode causing super long queues again. On top of that we can’t even choose the map we want to play in. It basically comes down to rolling the dice and hoping you get the map.

If you’d been paying attention to the Battleplan thread for this week you’d already know that matchmaking will see some changes sometime tomorrow. Tomorrow you can also keep a look out for a post from Joe or Jythri regarding the changes.

To be honest with you having 6 playlists total is the best way to go; you get the of variety without changing playlists with Casual and Competitive, then there should be the match type lists for the purists who only like playing one specific gametype… The spotlight battle is also a good idea… What is slowing the queue time is the skill based match-making…

im not sure theres enough players to have one it needs to be a bit wider maybe if they want to have one. (skill based matchmaking)

What about when the price drop flood gates open? By doing this now it won’t have to be adjusted later… And that would just cause a firestorm of problems if we don’t just set up for a future… Longevity will help the player base expand as we talk people into playing this game as story and character expansions are released…
We, the player base need to start roping in our friends, and talking our families into watching match broadcasts… If we go competitive we NEED to become a spectator sport…
A little planning ahead now will pay off later, we REALLY need to be noob friendly, and with the right storm we will have an even better time…

it does need to be more noob friendly for sure. skill based just takes quite a bit of time to find match just think they need to make it more broad maybe was too harsh to suggest removing it :no_mouth:. People need a reason to go into competitive so the more casual/newer people can go there because as of now almost everyone is just using that que because its hard to find matches.
i got my brother and a few friends to play and ill be playing this game whether it sinks or swims :punch:
I’ve seen lots of new players lately so it’s never too late!

It should be made clear that the casual list does not affect your competitive list standing… That will help…

Here is Jythri saying sorry, (he posted a couple of times, check the timestamp)

I’m on PS4 and never had much problem finding teams but I usually got stomped. The new Competitive mode took a while to start but the matches were better balanced at least. However over the last few days I can’t get a PVE team over 3 peopleand. Last night on Incursion spotlight I actually got a teamwith a command rank 1 and 2 (I’m 50).

Amusingly enough, they turned out to be kids streaming the match (I could hear them over their mics). It was a pretty bad match since they spent most of the time playing with our middle buildables and thrall.

I’m concerned that reverting the matchmaking changes might not help that much if these are the results I’m getting to begin with.

You took 1 step forward when you disabled ELO

See, in my eyes, that was a massive step backward. They are doing their best to make as many people happy as they can.

I would have to agree with you if we had a large playerbase. However, with only a few hundred players it makes it impossible to divide multiplayer population even more and expect faster queue times.

That’s just the thing. Your priority is the fastest queue. Mine is to have a balanced match. Neither of us is right or wrong here, it’s a matter of personal preference. I would MUCH rather wait 3-5 minutes for a balanced match than to get into a match more quickly, and I never waited longer than that prior to dropping ELO restrictions.
