Let's Talk About Today's XP Changes and What They Mean For AFKers/Quitters

Yes, in a way it does. They can pub-stomp all day long now and reap big xp rewards whether the match finishes or not. Meanwhile, victims of said premade, after continued surrender fails and watching revive timers, will quickly decide that this game is not for them.

I want Battleborn to succeed, I love this game, I never seem to run out of stuff to do or work towards. But I just can’t see the playerbase growing anymore, even if it does become F2P. The skillgap has become so large, and continues everyday, for any new player to be able to jump in and have fun. Which would leave the option of playing PvE, but brings the problem of reptitiveness due to the lack of stages. If I had to guess, introducing more story stages and really improving and fine-tuning matchmaking is the only way to not only bring in new players, but also retain.

Yes, they would. That’s the point, because if prestige system existed in the first place, they would be at this level by this time anyways,

This aside, my point is that a lot of challenge experience is getting wasted. Too much. Those challenges are complete, I won’t be getting that huge chunks of exp anymore, they went into nothingness. This is extremely unfair when compared to people who is going to be below max level when prestige system gets released.

I’m hoping that if they allow us to prestige, so to speak, that it’s like how resetting badass challenges in BL2 was like, it sets all your challenges back to rank 1 allowing you to start all over. Also I feel a neat gimmick would be to allow us to keep our character challenges (and only the character challenges) from resetting, that way when you reset your rank you only have the characters unlocked that you unlocked through challenges. Gives more meaning to actually doing the challenges instead of just ranking up for character unlocks.

I might be alone here, but am I really the only one who completely enjoy the game for the game? I love the diving deeper into char, more fully comprehending intent and mechanics, the fluctuation(s) between PVP and PVE, the thrill of (and comfort of strangers in a) random PUG PVP vs the “security” of pre-made, the _Aha!-_moment when I find a killer map path I didn’t know about, the joy of at last getting that legendary gear I’ve been chasing forever (Boots Of The Brute, I’m looking at you and your days evading my efforts are numbered …),
not to mention hilarious taunts and skins, and all this and so much more aside the mere victories or titles.

I’m by now rank 100 and Master of 8 chars - and never find myself in the slightest in need of additional stimuli to fuel my desire for the rollercoaster ride also known as Battleborn.

Yes. Just. Yes.

At command rank 100 and most of my favs at 15, more xp IS NOT an incentive to stay in a losing match. But if I knew a chunk of credits was in it for me as long as I fight to the bitter end? Absolutely! Getting a new piece of gear or skin/taunt will absolutely take the sting out of getting stomped.

Finally now those opponents that surrender will be the only ones that suffer a loss of xp. It was annoying how my char xp would suffer for the enemy wanting to quit in the first 10 mins.

No, but you’re in the minority (along with me), which is kind of what Jythri is talking about. As long as there are new things to experience (be they new characters, new content, new gear), I’m going to remain interested. It’s only when there isn’t anything new that I’m going to start getting bored.

Many people tend to generalize their experiences within a game, however. They’ll get bored because they’ve “finished” playing every character that interests them (even if they haven’t mastered it) and/or “finish” playing every map (even if they don’t have every piece of gear at max roll or have it completed with a great score on every difficulty). There’s a higher threshold of novelty for them.

Also, many people tend to be more goal/achievement oriented rather than seekers of novelty. Adding new levels/progression isn’t really going to do much for novelty/experience seekers but will do a lot to motivate completionists and achievers.

@JoeKGBX I understand the thought process behind this, and I supported it, until I just experienced a VERY unpleasant situation which I’m 100% positive will keep happening.

This will entice people to keep playing till the end, even if it is against a losing situation, but what happens to those who are playing with a character who is maxxed out in levels and you’re also maxxed out in CR?

I was put into a game with a group of 3 and another random, I chose a character I had at max level and I am CR100. Now, my team was underperforming, they sucked, and I felt I was underperforming in my role because of them…now, As soon as my frustration got the best of me, and after attempting to communicate briefly with them, I wanted to surrender (Incursion match, 100-100). Response?

“No, I want the experience”.

So here I am, as a level 100 person, using a level 15 character stuck playing an annoyingly frustrating game without the option to surrender since the 3-man group wanted to keep going for “the experience”. At some point the other random wanted to surrender (not quit) and the other 3 guys turned it down.

Long story short, other random left, I was considering leaving but used all my willpower to stay with this awful group of 3. I had 0 Fun, I had 0 motivation to play, I hated every freakin second of it. I had NEVER experienced that before until this new announcement about XP.

I would highly appreciate if you guys quickly came to a decision about Level Caps and stuff, otherwise using characters you love and have maxxed out will be the single most annoying experience. I had to put up with a 30 minute game that made me want to punch something for what? A couple hundred credits and NOTHING ELSE? Just because other guys were too stubborn to surrender because “Muh XP”? What the actual fudge is the point of the Surrender option now?

Sorry for the rant. But this right here has been THE most screwed up thing that I’ve experienced.

Your call of course…me…I just see it as a challenge.

And I LOVE challenges!

Get my butt kicked? So what. Maybe I help some folks who then decide…“Hey…I can do this with a little practice…I kinda like this game.”

And I LOVE running into the super de duper gangs of five that just smoke your a$$…

  1. I always learn from them
    and
2… I love the feeling when I get an occasional…and I do mean occasional…kill on one of these guys

Plus…it’s just a game…

In a REAL situation I know I can carry my weight just fine.

FYI, it’s always adjusted to how many players are still in the match. I’ve had 3 people quit, you can tell the difference.

I agree, it is just a matter of preferences. Yours are just different than mine and that’s ok.

My pre-made members and I are pretty much done with this game. We are mostly pvpers so It is not challenging or fun to us anymore. We play together 2-5 matches a day and haven’t lost a single battle.

It was fun and challenging when the competitive feature took place. There were many skillful level 100’s grouping together. Battles where pushing forward and getting pushed back got our adrenaline rushing. Where the slightest mistake from a single member can highly benefit the other team. Team composition, player’s skill and communication played a major impact to win. We were constantly on our toes. Unfortunately, that feature was taken away and the matchmaking became boring again to players like us. Going against beginners is not fun: I also do a lot of solo queue and those are even worse.

2 of my premade members already quit the game today and I am going to take a break. Hopefully, the matchmaking problem gets fixed in the future, if not this is good bye for us.

I can see how a top level player could get frustrated with the matchmaking.

Me…I’m totally new to PvP and am 62 years old and though I played college football and jumped out of perfectly good airplanes for a living…

The fast twitch is long gone.

So for me it has been a totally different type learning experience and in the end it’s been fun and I’ve learned a TON. I’m at the point now I win as much as I lose and kill as many as being killed…so, improvement.

Even if this game is not wildly successful…

I spent an enormous amount of pleasurable hours in it (already). And for what it cost me, the price was a bargain.

As you’ve described it, some of these things could stand to be tweaked. First, longer matches shouldn’t reward more exp by default. You shouldn’t miss out on EXP by winning too quickly. Second, a team surrender should only count against your score if you yourself vote for surrender. As it is now individual players can’t control whether or not their team surrenders, and they certainly shouldn’t be punished for their teammates choosing to surrender.

As far as rewarding players for gaining EXP past CR 100, what about something like requiring the same amount of EXP that it takes to get from 99 to 100 and then granting them a token or pack of some sort and then resetting the meter again. Different packs could cost a different number of tokens or something.

@Rabid_Explosions Sometimes it just happens. Some matches aren’t so great. That doesn’t mean your team should be penalized because you aren’t enjoying it. I also think it makes perfect sense that they didn’t want to surrender a tie game.

The game is tons of fun. It has a steep learning curve in pvp. It takes a lot of hours, days and months to get really familiar with your characters, team oriented plays, awareness of your surroundings and so on.

I’ve been playing this game since day 1 of its released date. Back then it was easy to learn as you play because everyone was at about the same level of experience and skill but now newcomers have a terrible time. They constantly get paired against levels 100’s. The skill gap is so large that even a 3v5 odds in their favor doesn’t help them ( assuming the level 100’s are above rookie player skill). It will get even worse now with this extra exp bonus the devs are introducing into the game. It encourages dragging on more matches in incursion and more abusive encounters of high vs low level players. With the current match-making system the game is not noob friendly in the pvp environment. Finally, it doesn’t have much to offer to veteran players.

Generally, I like the changes, however, my main problem is that I as a lone player has very little to say when the rest of my team wants to surrender. I never give up, I never surrender.

And as previously said, the matchmaking is horrible. At least 40% of my matches has been against 5 CR100.

I can settle for being The Minority Report :acmferro:

Definitely not alone.
I play the game for the enjoyment, the extras are just kind of a bonus. Like lore and leveling to unlock new mutations…but…that’s why I stay. I don’t want to waste time with a terrible group who won’t surrender even though the match is a steamroll because it is boring.
Experience means nothing when I am bored out of my mind.
The only thing that stops me from quitting these types of matches is my moral compass, not the “experience to my character”.

Yeah, just had a match where one guy quit at map select. Another guy quit at the very start of the match. I trudged it out, asking for surrender on a game with almost zero fun and zero chance of winning.
The experience for trudging it out to the end was not an incentive for me, but apparently was incentive for my two allies.
I quit.
Never just quit a match before, but I’m not wasting 30 minutes of an unfun match for the “experience points”.

I played a couple hours of PVP today and the general trend I noticed is in my PUG teams is that despite these changes to XP gained, this makes zero difference to those who are not having a good time getting annihilated.

Based on the amounts of surrenders that popped up during all my matches, I shows that no one is going to sit there helping the other team get their Worthy of Song type titles and spent the entire match not enjoying themselves just for some extra XP. When I saw all those green ticks pop up one after another I couldn’t blame them - I wasn’t enjoying myself either.

Did the opponent also quit at player selection? The match shouldn’t have started at 3v5. Either way, why didn’t you disconnect to prevent the match from starting seeing a lost was decided before the battle even begins…
