So getting back to the OP and the original purpose of this thread, yes, there are characters in Battleborn that could definitely fall under the umbrella of LGBT.
This thread kind of turned into a discussion about inclusion and that’s totally fine. People are certainly opinionated on this issue and many like it. The fact that we’re able to have discussions like this on these forums while maintaining civility speaks very highly of this community.
When the team sets out to create characters, it’s not necessarily with the mindset of “this character’s sexual orientation should be ____”. The bigger thought is “how can we best connect this character with our audience?” Sometimes these sorts of things become more evident as the character is fleshed out and sometimes they don’t. I think one of our concept artists, Amanda Christensen made the point best last year at PAX South by saying (and I’m paraphrasing her here) that diversity in character design isn’t necessarily about making a statement, it’s just good design.
Our team understands that everyone will connect and identify to different characters and for different reasons. We like to do our best to facilitate that connection in any way we can. Character diversity is a great way to do that. After all, let’s be honest – no one wants to see the same character copy/pasted over and over again, right?
