Hi. Just popping in to commend the civility that has so far been shown in this thread.
Let’s keep it that way, okay?
For the record, Gbx and the moderator team are all very pro-diversity.

I think this discussion can really be brought down to Janie vs Athena. In TPS, if you play as Athena, Janie is really shoved down your throat lesbian. To a point of creepy. That’s forcing a gay character into a plot (when it contributes nothing. Really it’s just them saying “Look we have a gay character”). Now compare it to Athena to Tales from the Borderlands (FANTASTIC GAME FYI, played this before TPS). You offhandedly find out she’s gay and becomes a driving story point for her. It’s natural and most importantly not forced. So if any of the characters are gay (my guess Ambra for Galilea) it needs to be natural, like in dialogue or lore. Not " Here’s our gay character! "
As a side note, yes it’s end of the world and you wouldn’t think sexuality’s matter, but if the story presents itself in such a way that characters are losing hope it would open an opportunity to express their hidden feelings, etc, naturally and believably.
Can we also talk about Orendis love for a Penguin? I think cross species is trumping a need for LGBT that people may have
Does it matter though?
If it’s in, it’s in, but forcing a character with whatever sexuality for the sake of avoiding “discrimination!” calls has become a plague to media imo.
That’s my point. There’s nothing wrong with doing it and they don’t need to. As long it’s done correctly, I’ve no problems with it
But if it’s to promote diversity, then that’s cool. I don’t see gearbox doing what you suggest.
Just a general statement. I don’t think there’s anything to complain about, unless someone rips a single part out of the context like you just did.
Just placing it in the context of the game we’re discussing. That’s all.
Well the previous comments have left that special topic already and spread into a more general discussion about lgbt.
My slightly more unspecific opinion about this topic (and others):
“Let the developers finish their game how they wanted it, and stop projecting you own gameplay-irrelevant beliefs onto the game while demanding the devs to represent you somehow.”
-Me; Today
(focus on “gameplay-irrelevant”. Anyone can suggest gameplay changes, and devs often take those suggestions thankfully, even when they don’t feel the need to implement them for various reasons. Which is totally their right.)

How is she “shoving it down our throat”?
The constantly in your face and unnecessary comments by her. You break the feeling of a good story by forcing the fact on someone. You do wonderful storytelling when you present it in the story. It’d be really unnecessary if and in your face if it was a straight thing. You don’t need to remind someone constantly a character is straight unless it becomes relevant to the plot.
And if the devs share those beliefs, such as greater representation of minorities, it’s cool too. And people certainly can -and often do- suggest things that don’t relate to gameplay.
Also, originally, peoples on this topic didn’t said they absolutely wanted one.
They just said it would be cool, or just wanted to know if there were one. Don’t over-read, guys.
That was included in my statement. The focus was on forcing stuff in. You try to read a demand out of my comments that isn’t there. You could say it’s pointless.
scarring flashbacks to janey springs dialogue imminent
Just checking something: you’re completely fine with developers (such as gearbox) including characters with minority characteristics (such as LGBT) in games, right? You just don’t like people requesting them. Am I correct?
Yes. Of course. I just think “needing” to include one alters the original idea. Like when someone told you that you have to put basil and sage in every soup. It may taste ok, but maybe the cook would’ve been able to do something much better without those nonsensical demands.
Okay, well, I don’t see anyone saying that they ‘need to’. Just a suggestion that it would be nice, as in the OP.
I’m still a little confused about why you think we can only suggest things relating to gameplay.
I’d much rather like to stay away from requesting changes that include sensible topics like that. Yes those things exist, but no need to shove it in people’s faces for the sake of reminding them that they exist. Which is what a majority of the exposure nowadays boils down to, rather than trying to create something unique out of itself.
That’s my only problem with that. And as I mentioned already -and want to remind readers of- it was a general statement, that can be related to any media. Apply it to Battleborn if you want.
