Lore Challenges: Why PVP?

IIRC it has something to so with gali and ambra being related (friendship or blood idk) and alani being somehow allied to gali.

(You see i dont know for sure because I HAVENT READ THE LORE)

-.-

Yeah, I wasn’t very happy to see that Alani also has to kill Ambra. Why aren’t there any Ambras in pvp? Because now they have two characters trying to kill them instead of trying to achieve the objectives of the map. And now you have two characters competing for the same kill. How many of you are going to start complaining that Alani is chasing down Ambra instead of doing her job? It might make sense in the game for these two individuals to stop at nothing to kill her whenever they see her, but in real life it doesn’t make it fun for someone wanting to play Ambra or the teams of any of them. If you want people to pvp for lore advancement, offer us a way to do that that doesn’t impact the people that are there for the pvp and normally enjoy the challenge of the map. Offer us a way to do that that doesn’t cause all these disconnects when people don’t get what they want, be that lore or certain maps or whatever. How about pvp options that only allow certain characters and it’s just a freakin’ bar brawl? Sounds boring as hell, but it would get the job done, if you could negotiate with people to exchange beatings. Or come up with an answer that makes it fun for people playing Ambra to chance getting her butt kicked constantly because she won’t be able to contribute in any meaningful way to objectives. Why would anyone choose her as a healer when there’s at least two others that have a more normal level of hostility toward them. Or just allow us pve-ers to complete these objectives between ourselves in private matches.

Gali was tasked with going deep undercover in the Sisterhood Ambra was a member of to try and stop the Sustainment. The two became friends and after Gali killed one of the higher ranking members, Ambra almost killed her, but put her through the Sustainment ritual in an attempt to save her life. Something went wrong and now Gali has a demon inside of her. I don’t have all of the lore because I don’t do PVP, but that’s the gist of what I’ve gotten from it. I have no idea why Alani’s involved, but Gali was an Eldrid operative before she joined the UPR.

I’m thinking I should start playing Ambra and run around feeding haha

Oh dont worry. After the release of Alani, you have no chance of doing your challenges pve anyway ^^

It appears that the suggestion to complete the PvP lore in Pritvate matches won’t be applied as an option. Just saw a comment from Jythri aka Randy Varnell regarding this.

" Mentioned this in the other thread about this: We’re going to try to do a pass on these this week and reduce the requirement. We hear you (and we’re playing too). This is too much hate for one Ambra!

Short term: we’ll reduce requirements on multiple challenges
Long term: We’ll try and avoid the more frustrating challenges.

We probably won’t be changing the requirements to play in both PvE and PvP. We will also probably not support completion of challenges in Private matches, as some have suggested. There are challenges that give titles that are badges of honor, and we would like to maintain the integrity of those challenges.

The most important thing we are reviewing currently is the difficulty of challenges that are outside the intended range of … well… challenge. Those should be getting some love soon."

Where is that quote from, out of curiosity?

Very disappointing nonetheless. I hope that, at least, by “reducing requirements” that they mean more than reducing numbers required. Nothing is more frustrating than trying for a lore challenge and not getting it to increment at all. Allowing assists instead of just kills for the “Kill X Battleborn” would help, as would reducing the requirements to increment things like Toby’s ult challenge and Kelvin’s Subliminate challenge.

Yeah, it’s pretty disappointing they’re leaving bot matches basically useless. I get challenges being a ‘badge of honor’, and I’m fine if titles and crap are left out of what I can do privately, but again, lore.

I played Alani last night in the story levels and had a ton of fun. I’m really disappointed by how much of her lore is PvP locked, but at least she’s a healer and I might feel useful - until I go running off after Ambra. Seriously, how long is it going to be before Ambra is the character nobody ever plays in PvP because no one wants her on a team when everybody’s going to be trying to murder her repeatedly for challenges? It’ll make it too frustrating to ever play her, in turn making those challenges now impossible because you can’t ever find her to kill her, and if somebody does ever take a chance and play her it’ll just be worse because she’s so rare you’d better get your kills while you can. And because private matches don’t count, there’s no solution. You can’t just ask a friend to come play Ambra so you can get the darn thing over with.

I sort of find myself predicting that in a few months there will be challenges that have been rendered all but impossible to ever complete, because they require random PvP matchups that won’t be made due to people never wanting to play a character who will just be ganged up on the whole match. And, unfortunately, almost all of them will probably be lore challenges.

Darnit Varnel, so knifing swarmers for two hours is considered a “challenge” but killing an OM bot for 2 hours isn’t?

Dat double standard yo.

Why PvP lore challenges?

Because its “Lore Challenge” not “Lore Walk-in-the-park”.

Challenges should be, well, challenging, not being easy.

Besides most hard lore challenges will only take some time and patience. Yeahh you´re not done in an hour. What an outrage.

Well, if that’s true, it sucks. That’s a whole lot of characters I’m never going to master. I guess I’ll look up their lore on YouTube or something and then park 'em on the bench until I feel like changing it up from a character I can actually master and earn Legendary lore loot for.

There’s a difference between ‘challenging’ and ‘frustrating for everybody involved’, and most of the PvP challenges being complained about here lean towards the latter. If I’m spending 2 hours grinding bot kills, is it a challenge? I’d say no, grinding is grinding and it’s not particularly hard just time-consuming, but the game says yes - this is a PvE challenge. If I’m spending 8 hours trying to hunt down people playing specific other characters out of a list of 26 possibilities and proceeding to grief them for the entire match trying to complete a lore segment (and quite possibly only getting 1 or 2 kills for my time investment), is this a challenge? Well… it’s hard. This is a PvP challenge, and it isn’t just a grind, it’s detracting from playing a competitive game. It’s sending people off on griefing missions rather than encouraging them to cooperate with their team and play to win. Challenging? Maybe. Annoying? Definitely. Annoying to people who aren’t even trying for the challenge? Probably.

It’s poor design, and they’re locking lore behind it. If you want to give me a special title for being the world’s best Ambra griefer, that’s fine. Don’t lock my character’s story behind it.

So tell me whats the difference between Montana, ISIC and Foxtrot? Is one Battleborn particularly harder than another? No, not really. Theyre all pretty basic in design and skill level, BUT Foxtrot’s lore requires PVP and immediately makes some of his lore challenges IMPOSSIBLE for people who dont really care about it. Not because they’re “too hard” because the infrastructure behind the challenges won’t allow them to complete it unless they play a mode they dont want to play (most likely ruining that mode for the people that do because they ONLY care about completing that challenge).

Thats what bothers me about Varnells response and counterpoints like yours. Making PVP mandatory doesnt make the challenge harder, just more frustrating.

I look at it this way.

Back when I played Guild Wars, there were achievements for getting one hundred percent exploration, which generally involved running around and hugging zone walls. This included PvP maps.

Who had the right to complain about PvE players joining matches just to uncover the maps? No one, because that was the game Arenanet made.

The time that we can claim Gearbox was ignorant of the side effects of the lore system has passed. They have seen the results, and say that they aren’t going to change it. So, I now no longer feel guilty over focusing on personal objectives over team ones, or game dodging when I can’t increment my lore objective. While I disagree, I can be at peace with it. The real people who suffer are the PvP crowd that has to deal with the lore hunters in their matches.

That is the game Gearbox made.

Tired of reading “it’s a challenge”. A challenge is something that tests your skill not RNG. I have played 82 PVP matches been Galilea 74 of those times. I have 11/25 Ambra kills. I have not completed this lore simply because I lack skill it is because it is too random.

Reasons:
Some else chooses Galilea first = can’t do it
Other team does not choose Ambra = can’t do it

These are random pure and simply. An example of a challenge is Oscar Mike’s 50,000 shots. That takes time and patience but no random element at all to it. Another are the damage to Rendain. It is only damage not number of kills. I have completed every rendain lore on the first pass playing each character. Again the damage to Rendain not random chance just takes patience and skill.

For these reasons I believe they need to change. Now I will provide an alternative.

Solution: similar to rendain challenges why not deal X number to character (thing is this is still RNG)
Solution 2: Kills of Faction. Set it high, I don’t care, at least that would be more likely achievable with time, patience, and skill.

Not trying to start a fight, (I’m Canadian, we don’t do that :P) just hope we can come to some compromise and have a discussion with the devs. I am a dev myself, I understand not all feedback is right but you must consider why you are receive said feedback and come at it with empathy and rationale.

I agree that challenges should apply to the players skill - but I think its very common in videogames that the term “Challenges” is bound to a task of pure grinding, farming & RNG.

I don´t say I like it, but Battleborn is not the first, only or last game which used the term wrong…
Look at Borderlands1-, all challanges were more or less grinding tasks or things you had to beat by being lucky.

^ LOVE THAT! I think this would eliminate all issues with the PvP-lore!

PS: 11 Ambra kills is really good! Damn, I wish I were so far in that challenge >.<
Luckily Orendi & Reyna have easier challenges.

It’s from a Battleborn sub reddit thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/Battleborn/comments/4ktk02/you_remember_all_that_fun_you_had_getting_25/

The developers tend to frequent there too.

I feel that PvP challenge/achievements i.e. “badge of honors” should have been a separate thing entirely. I understand and appreciate the effort made by the developers to give us lore via gameplay but some of these tasks are quite much for pieces of lore, and having a legendary gear locked behind them makes it worse.

It be nice to have alternate challenges, as someone else suggested, for each lore like the unlocks for Battleborn, i.e. Complete a certain equirement or reaching a certain Command Rank.

I love PVP, and I completely agree.

I’ve never been a fan of PVP challenges in any game or setting. They artificially manipulate the gameplay, you wind up with players chasing specific challenges instead of playing the game like they normally would.

Some challenges are fine “win X games” etc., but I don’t want to get screamed at by some child because I “stole” his Ambra kill he needs for a challenge… or having a Marquis chew me out because he needs another sentry kill.

And I don’t want someone picking a character that is absolutely horrible for the team comp, just because they have something they need to unlock. I love Whiskey Foxtrot, but there are so many people who just lock him in game, after game, even though they’re not good with him, because they’re just hoping to get OM kills. Get that junk out of my game.

It adds nothing productive to the environment, so don’t create it.

I’ll go play PVE if I want to chase meaningless challenges to unlock gear that isn’t worth its cost.

May I just say thank you for giving us confirmation from the other side? Seriously, I’ve been hoping we’d get a couple PvP-focused agreeing voices too.

It’s not that we don’t want to play with y’all or that we want things handed to us that you have to work for, it’s that we don’t want to mess up your game for you. At least that’s my stance on it. ‘Badges of honor’ and challenge difficulty and this being a ‘PvP-focused game’ and all that aside, the way these challenges are designed are not enhancing and are often ruining the experience for PvP players too. It’s not making the game more fun for either side - it’s doing the opposite. That’s a problem.

GBX has been very good about listening to us in the past, so if we keep pushing this issue, they may relent and either remove the PVP challenges or offer an alternative. I hope they do because I don’t want to go into somebody else’s game and ruin their fun simply because I’m looking to kill a particular character.
