Oh yes.
I was firing away with a CoV AR and saw the Mail message ding, and thought to myself “Good, maybe a nice on-level CoV pistol”. After the battle, went to Mail and dang it! it was a dumb Atlas AX- pistol.
Disappointing.

During levelling, there are several I have used. Sometimes they would show up at the perfect time.
I remember my Amara was in dire need of a corrosive weapon going into the Agonizer 9000. Looked through the mail and there was a nice Corrosive pistol. Helped get her through the fight without her dying.
I love the mail loyalty reward system. It’s great while your leveling, and gives you some great items to try, at any level.
Weirdly, I’ve had a few glitches where I complete challenges for one manufacturer with another’s weapons (after swapping between them), or kill with one manufacturer and get rewards for another. Cov and atlas, yeah, but also dahl and maliwan and jacobs, a couple of times. Not sure what happened with it, but made me think that it’d be cool if there was another mechanic where killing 1000 enemies without using a specific manufacturer caused that manufacturer to send you a gun to tempt you back into trying them. Like “HEY MOTHER******, YOU HAVEN’T EXPLODED ANYTHING WITH A TORGUE WEAPON RECENTLY. WHAT’S UP WITH THAT? HERE, TAKE THIS SHOTGUN AND BLOW SOME *******S AWAY, RIGHT NOW!!!”, or something. =]
Mail weapons ARE trash.
I’ve seen my fair share, and I think I’ve pulled two that were actually useful. Randomly both were from Torgue.
Anyone saying you can use them to complete the campaign must have missed all those better guns laying on the ground after a boss fight. You get more gear from drops and the odds of getting something good in the mail are far too low.
Am I complaining about it? No, it isn’t hurting me to get gear I don’t need. But I am saying plenty of people overrate the function here in this thread. You might get something good, but you probably won’t. It’s still easier to find useful guns by killing things if you need an upgrade. Farm for some rewards, you’ll probably get a better version of the same gun while you rack up kills for the next reward.
What an odd thing to say.
I don’t think anyone has asserted I never pick things up, I only use Mail weapons.
I, for example, mentioned that I have had success getting upgrades through the Mail system, and I appreciated that. The Mail system is also, of course, biased towards weapons you enjoy/need to use.
My getting an upgraded Q-System through the mail is a good example fo that, using my aging Q lead to getting a new, on-level Q (with anointment) that I could use immediately.
Yes, picking up weapons is the main way to gain gear. I think some of us were simply pointing out that yes, you can sometimes pick up good weapons through the Mail. Usually no, but occasionally yes, and that makes it A-OK for me.

I used dozens of them for each of the three toons I took through to level 50. Love the addition of it but wish it was better implemented.
I Would prefer that instead of loyalty rewards it was the opposite. With Moze I used a ton of Torgue and thus had a mailbox full of them and wound up leaning on them. Would’ve been nice to get a mailbox full of some diversity.
Shields, mods, artifacts and grenades would be a great addition. Feels like I was always checking vendors for those because they didn’t hit the ground nearly enough.
Lastly it would be nice to see higher end gear show up every once in a while. Mostly an endgame gripe now but aside from person to person mailing the system is mostly useless.
Maybe if you’re a slacker and the boss drops are thus appropriate level.
I see no evidence the mail is biased towards weapons I enjoy. I think you’re under some confirmation bias here. I’ve never received a Q-System through the rewards, but I use them frequently. Plenty of Atlas pistols, and I can’t remember ever using one. I get Maliwan shotguns even though I only use SMGs for Maliwan. They don’t seem to care what type of weapon you’re using, just the manufacturer. Even then it’s almost always green, even after I’ve finished TVHM and killed thousands of enemies with that manufacturer.
or maybe if you’re not a slacker and you bothered to loot some Legendary Hunts and Targets of Opportunity. You know, 'cause they’re always at your level.
Also, ‘appropriate level’ is not concrete. Even if I’m level 44, a level 37 gun will still work against level 37 Tyreen. Gun level vs. enemy level means more for ‘appropriate level’ than character level does.
I should have been clearer, since you’re correct.
Biased towards manufacturers you like, not specific weapons.

I just killed the one in The Pyre of Stars, as a matter of fact. It dropped a green shield and an ammo… And maybe some money? On the plus side, I got mailed an AR upgrade on my way through here.
So, you killed an enemy one time and that’s not slacking? Do tell.
It’s not slacking for playing through the normal campaign, which is what’s on the table here. No sense in farming enemies at that point. If I’m not getting upgrades through the mail, chances are one of the many treks to Sanctuary will yield an upgrade from the vendors, both of which are more likely to happen than getting an upgrade from a casual drop.
You’re full of it. I got tons of low level legendaries during my first trip through the story. Level 18 Transformer, 21 Brainstormer, 25 Arctic Night Hawkin, 25 Mirv-Tacular Hex, 27 Recurring Hex, 26 DP Laser-Sploder, 32 Frozen Heart, 29 and 34 Ruby’s Wrath, 38 Hive. All from stuff I killed once. Clearly those didn’t come from one single attempt. You’re pretending that there aren’t tons of opportunities for Targets, Hunts, or rare spawns.
You don’t get to define ‘what’s on the table’. I’m sorry if it’s difficult to argue when you’re not allowed to set the rules, but that’s life. I can farm for upgrades during normal mode all I want. Then I have a bunch of cool stuff for my next character instead of constantly pulling greens from the mail.
Even If I were to let you set the ‘rules’, you’ve already been proved wrong by the fact that you can still use level 37 guns against level 37 enemies. You’re conveniently ignoring that.
Most likely levelling. Many of the guns from the mail are right murdrers in normal mode.
They aren’t, however, always trash. I got a Quickie with +75% damage per stickie, 2x and +125% fire damage after getting out of Iron Bear. With the 5 seconds of free ammo from Some for the Road on Moze there’s no non-immunity phase boss in the base game I can’t kill by the first reload on TVHM and M4.
It’s not the only gem that’s turned up. Yeah, most are trash but now and then…
In spite of how many people say Purples don’t work in M4 it’s not 100% true and many of the ones worth using can turn up in the mail.
I didn’t set the rules, we’re just clearly talking about a normal pre-50 play through in context.
That you can use lower level weapons is largely irrelevant when talking about getting better weapons. So, yes, I am dismissing it out of hand.
I know going in to a Borderlands game that there will be a need for farming. I don’t want to do it. Ever. I make an exception at endgame because it’s either farm or start a new game but I certainly don’t want to do any on my first play through. That’s a time for enjoying the scenery, developing a build that suits me and trying out as many guns as possible to see which mechanics I like and don’t like. For me personally, constantly farming a backpack full of legendaries pre-endgame means I’m constantly OP and getting no enjoyment as there would be no challenge.
The legendary drop rates are a bit absurd in this game. It’s common to see 5 or more oranges every 3 minute quit save farming run on mayhem 4. But in pre mayhem story mode they weren’t so prevalent for me. In my first Amara playthrough I got exactly one legendary to drop, the Tsunami. In the second playthrough I got a Headsplosion (very situational for me but a blast when used) a Laser Sploder which I kept equipped until the end (mostly because it sploded those damn ghosts) and a Boring Gun (which I do NOT know how to use effectively to this day). With less than optimum gear I had to struggle at times and it was a blast. If I’d had the ability to one shot every map (looking at you Recursion) I wouldn’t have.
With Zane and Moze I feel like I had two or three times as many legendaries drop, but most weren’t my jam. Launchers, snipers and Maliwan pistols just got left on the ground (and mostly si came t have felt that way too because of the shared bank and an orange reward here or there. I recall using a Roisen’s Thorns and a Flakker a LOT with Moze, and a Lead Sprinkler forever with Zane because the clone would wreck mobs with it. Any other legendaries I used with them didn’t leave a lasting impression on me because that’s all I remember using.
TL;DR. Your mileage may vary but I used the hell out of mailed guns and am thus very happy that it was added.
Let’s keep this on topic, talking about the game, rather than talking about other forum users, please.
Bingo! If you really don’t like the system any gun you consider junk you don’t even have to bother with just “decline” and move on, literally takes seconds to clear 30+ in the mailbox.
This post boggles my mind but I’m a silver lining kind of guy. I find it exciting to check the mail to see if there’s a interesting weapon this time around, like the lottery…did I win this time?
No- ‘Decline’ and move on or save it for a lower lvl to grab some SDU’s.
Yes- SCORE!
